Just as a double check, can we ensure it's not malware related
Download Hijackthis from my signature below
SAVE it to your desktop

Double click on hijackthis_sfx.exe on desktop
Click the UNZIP button
This will self extract to C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Delete hijackthis_sfx.exe from desktop
You can manually navigate to this folder by:
Go to START>> MyComputer>>Local disk C:>Program Files>
Open HijackThis folder

Double click to run Hijackthis.exe
Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log here... Don't try and fix anything---It is all important

I suspect I may know what's happening, but let's do the following first please

Your version of Sun Java is out of date and should be updated for security reasons
==Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation Multi-language
Save the file to your Desktop.
Don't install it yet

Open your Windows control panel>>Start>>control Panel
Ensure you are in Classic view
Double click to open the Java Icon>>Under the General tab select "Delete Files"
Leave all 3 selections checked and click OK
Exit Java

Access your Add/remove programs via Control Panel
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE or Java 2 Runtime Environment.... )
eg..J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

They should have the following icon next to it: Posted Image
Select it and click Remove on all of them

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Close down all browser windows, including this one
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

Open Ad-Aware SE 1.06

Can you do the following
First create a fresh restore point for me
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Name it and click create
When it's finished, exit

NEXT: Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip
and save it too your desktop
* Right click on XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip on your desktop, and choose Extract All
* Click "Next"
* In the box to choose where to extract the files to, click "Browse"
* Left click to Highlight "Desktop" then hit OK
* Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

You should now have XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe on desktop, we'll need this in a bit

Open Your Device Manager again
Right click on "HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA 4080N" and choose UNINSTALL
Ok any prompts
Exit Device manager
But DO NOT restart your computer yet
Or allow to install driver yet

Instead do the following
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O9 - Extra button: Bodog Poker - {F47C1DB5-ED21-4dc1-853E-D1495792D4C5} - C:\Program Files\Bodog Poker\BPGame.exe (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Double click on XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe
Click the "Restore Missing Drives to Windows Explorer"
Follow the prompts

Afterwards reboot your computer, allow Windows XP to detect and install DVD

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Also, double click on Export.bat again and post the contents of Export.txt

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Did you uninstall the Drive from Device manager?
Did you run XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe?

Is your drive detected?
Any yellow exclamation marks in device manager?

Is the drive reading any discs?

If not and
If no problems in device manager
Run XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe again
Reboot the computer

Any help?

Can you also do the following again
Delete Export.txt on your desktop
Double click on Export.bat and post the contents of the NEW Export.bat

I did everything you had posted ran xp_cd_fix and restarted nothing happened. The drive is detected in device manager but theres an exclamation mark next to it says windows cannot load driver. Under My Computer no dvd-drive is showing just my harddrive.

No luck either when i tried doing the Xp fix again..

We have a backup of that key
Can we try the following
Any CD/DVD burning software you have installed recently
UNINSTALL it from add/remove programs
as they may have corrupted the drivers for your DVD Rom
I would also uninstall Bearshare media toolbar, it is adware

Reboot the computer afterwards
Back in Windows
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"LowerFilters"=-
"UpperFilters"=-

Double click on fix.reg
Allow to add/merge to the registry at the prompt

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Does that help?

If you still have problems
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. If Control Panel is in Category view, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System.
3. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

Note In Windows Vista Beta 2, click Device Manager in the left pane. If a dialog box appears that describes permissions, click Continue.
4. Click the drive with the question mark next to it.
5. On the Action menu, click Uninstall. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
6. Repeat steps 4 through 5 for any other drives with question marks.
7. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
