Instead of 'net stop wuauserv'

Try this instead, go to START>>RUN>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
Look for "Automatic Updates"
Right click on it and select Properties, STOP the service if running
APPLY and OK it, see if that works

I was able to complete all of the steps; however, windows updates failed to install. Here they are: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2416447). These are the updates that came up as high-priority. This is the message that came up-Error Code: 0x64C. Also, the most recent Java update that popped up for me to install failed. I didn't even catch which one it was. I'm going to try going to Java's website and do it manually. Thanks, Meaghan

Let's try a solution from Microsoft
If you can't do a step, let me know please

1. Click Start, click Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

2. Double click the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".

3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

5. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
NOTE: On my XP machine, this service is set to Manual

6. Please repeat the above steps with the following service: Automatic Updates
Ensure it is set to Automatic
You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If one of the two services is missing, please let me know.


Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder .
This problem may occur if the Windows Update, Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.

1. Click Start, click Run, and type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Please run the following command in the opened window to stop the Automatic Updates service.
Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.
2. Click Start, click Run, and type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
4. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.


Rename CatRoot2 folder . Locate and open the System32 folder. 4. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click on it, and select RENAME. Change the name to CR2OLD. Make sure you press Enter after typing in the new name, so the changes are executed.

At this time can you then restart your computer
This should ensure that the services needed are started properly
Open IE8 and manually check for Windows Updates from the menu bar TOOLS>>Windows Updates
or go to the following link

download install Only all the High Priority updates
Reboot one more time after successfully updating

Hey Guestolo! I did the dial-a-fix a couple of weeks ago. My computer is running great except at startup. The wuauclt.exe process begins running upon startup and I either have to wait about 30 minutes for it to stop whatever it's doing or end task about 20 times from task manager app. wuauclt.exe occasionally shows up during use after an hour or so and bogs up the usage for a minute or more. I don't remember exactly when I noticed this process, but I do know that I never had this problem before. I would guess about a year or so ago, if that. Thanks again for your help.

Do you still have Auto Updates disabled?

No worries I have it set to manual updates b/c the notifications were driving me crazy! Should I turn it back on or manually update it from the website? It seems to be running better still though; however, slightly slower at startup, but not as bad as before. Do you know why windows updates would be slowing down my computer all of a sudden? Should I install more RAM?

I ran some scans on my comp last week as it has been awhile. SAS came up clean, but malwarebytes found something. I saved a log and have posted it below:

Mbam was able to quarantine and remove successfully. Do you think this virus could reappear or is somewhere else on my comp? Do you think this is what I have been having trouble with causing my comp to slow down? Do you know if this virus is associated with wuauclt.exe process? Any other thoughts? Thank you.
