The Private Club / What are you hobbies?!?!?!
« on: June 05, 2006, 12:18:27 PM »
Yep, a good question.  Hopefully we can get some good answers!!!

And I will start off!!

I like photography.  I had a website showcasing my work but I got lazy and haven't put it up since it expired.  Maybe I'll get back to it sooner or later!!

I like watching movies based on wars.  From good old favorites like Platoon to newer ones like We Were Soldiers.

I also play guitar.  I used to play in a band (www.dolorouscanter.com) but the band is no longer.

And of course, sitting at home drinking a cold beer playing some Call of Duty 2 on the PC!!!!

Software / Simple DOS Menu Wanted
« on: January 25, 2006, 03:13:02 PM »
OK.

So I created a base image for our desktops and laptops using ghost and sysprep.

Now once Windows has been installed and configured and the local administrator logs in. I would like a menu to pop up asking if this machine is a desktop, laptop, tablet. You choose what it is and it then begins installing apps based on your choice. The apps would be stored locally. Once the apps are installed the last command would be to delete the folder where the apps are located.

I think I can pull of the 2nd part but I can't create a menu using my old DOS ways. I have yet to play with WMI scripts. Is it time for me to unlearn what I have learned or can DOS still work for me?!?!?!

This is on Windows XP SP2.

Software / System Tray Icons Disappeared
« on: September 09, 2003, 05:41:34 PM »
Running XP Pro w/ SP1 fully patched.

I logged in today to find that all my System Tray Icons have disappeared and no they are not hidden.

If I log in as another user, the icons come back so this is a user profile error.

Anyone experience this?!?!  If so, outside of recreating the user profile, how did ou fix the problem?

Thanks,

Tech Clinic / User Profile Problems
« on: February 19, 2002, 06:13:14 PM »
hello all...i\'m in a situation here and i hope you all can help me. a friend dropped off his computer and he wanted me to clean it up. i did the basic stuff and to save space i removed some old profiles that hadn\'t been used in a couple of months...or so i thought.

what this person did was make shortcuts to several documents in different profiles instead of storing all the documents in his current profile. is there a way to retrieve those profiles? anything????

For Sale / Wanted / 3 512MB PC133 FOR SALE
« on: October 10, 2001, 10:05:37 AM »
I want to sell off 3 sticks of 512MB PC133 High Density RAM.  My motherboard doesn\'t like High Density RAM.  So I had to buy regular RAM.  If you know your motherboard can handle High Density RAM.  Name your price...

2 were in my machine for about 3 weeks and 1 is brand spanking new.

Hardware / Effects of crappy RAM??
« on: October 02, 2001, 09:16:08 AM »
Hello all,

I\'m currently using an ECS K7VZA Ver. 3.3 motherboard.  And it said it uses 64x64 RAM, but I installed 64x4.  I\'ve noticed the ocassional crash.  But I want to know if the density effects the computer in anyway?

I don\'t want to buy new 64x64 RAM if it won\'t really make much of a difference!!

Thanks

Software / Win 98 question...
« on: October 01, 2001, 01:58:16 PM »
I was doing some cleaning here at work and I threw out all my Win95b CD\'s a couple of months ago.  What\'s the problem you ask???  Well my Windows 98 CD is the upgrade version so when I try and install it askes for the 95 CD.  My question is, can I change a file in the install directory so it doesn\'t ask for the Win95 CD for verification?  I\'d really hate to buy a brand new copy of Win98 for the one PC in the office that isn\'t Win2k compatible.

Thanks in advance...

Tech Clinic / Windows XP crashes!!!
« on: September 18, 2001, 10:13:38 AM »
OK, here is my setup:

Windows XP RC2
Athlon T-Bird 1.4Ghz
1.0GB PC133 RAM
ECS K7VZA (Intergrated Audio...which sucks!!!)
VIA KT133A (I think...)
ATI RAGE 128
3COM NIC
Seagate 40 GB (2 partitions - C:WixXP & D:mp3 and video)
Sony CD-RW 12x8x32x
Pine 52x CD-ROM (Sounds like a fighter jets afterburners are at full blast!!!)

Now here is the problem:

When ever I try to record a CD from either CD-ROM/RW to the harddrive or transfer a large amount of files (mp3\'s from previous harddrive) my PC BSOD\'s with serveral kinds of errors some are IRQ related others are PageFile.sys related.  But it only happens when I transfer/record files to the harddrive.  I tried installing the new 4 in 1 V1.33 drivers, but that didn\'t help!!!  Any ideas?

This is my first time dealing with AMD/VIA and I\'m not liking it at all!!!!

Hardware / 1 Pentium 4 vs. 2 Pentium III\'s - What\'s better?
« on: August 03, 2001, 09:32:33 AM »
I have quite a dilema here, I\'m looking to upgrade my processor and motherboard.  Last week, I found a nice P 4 1.4 Ghz/mobo combo for a good price and this week I found a Dual  III 1Ghz/mobo combo for a bit less.  I\'m a casual user and I will be using Windows 2000/XP Pro as an O.S.  What do you think would be better?  I play the ocassional games, I have Broadband connection, I use my computer as a jukebox.  What would work better for me?  For me 2 PIII 1GHZ is better than 1 P 4 1.4 Ghz.  What does everybody else think?

Tech Clinic / Slow Printing....
« on: July 11, 2001, 08:21:27 AM »
I have a user on Windows 2000 that has major problems printing.  The first print job of the morning or after a reboot work fine but any other print job just sits in the queue for what seems like an eternity before it gives me the basic \"Print Error\" in the Queue.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what can be wrong with it?

Software / Wincows XP RC1...What do you think?
« on: July 05, 2001, 08:48:03 AM »
I got it and installed it without any problems and I love it!  I had also gotten a copy of Beta 2 earlier in the year and for some reason it didn\'t sit too well with me.  I think it was the machine that I had installed it on.  But I installed RC1 on my home machine and it is just amazing.  I love the CD burning function in XP, it\'s not too much more than drag and drop!  And it even created a PPPoE connection for my DSL connection.  So far I am impressed.

What does everybody else think of RC1?

Software / Will anyone miss Clippy?
« on: May 10, 2001, 09:37:30 AM »
You know Clippy!!!!  He was the paperclip that would pop up and say It seems that you are writing a letter.  Would you like assistance?[/b].  I hear he\'ll be out of a job once XP is out. Admit it everyone!! We all have a soft spot in our heart for dear ol\' Clippy, as annoying as he was.

Software / SP1 Slipstream
« on: April 30, 2001, 09:46:08 AM »
Where do I run it from? CMD? I tried it from CMD and I got an error stating that update was not able to update any or all files.  Has anyone got this or any other errors and if you\'ve fixed it, how did you fix it?

Thanks
