So i used an OEM cd that obviously has an embedded serial to do a fresh install. now the problem is i cannot replace the Serial with a legal, unused one i have because every time the "You have XX days to activate windows" comes up, i click "activate now" and it does not give me the option to change the product key, and tells me that windows is already activated. once the 30 days runs out, (i changed the date as an experiment) it will completely lock out even if i change the date back.

I am still able to boot into safemode with dos prompt, and do some work form there, but nothing seems to be working. is there something i can delete or edit in order to make XP lose the serial and ask me for a new one? i have already tried to delete the registry key that everyone uses. HEEEELLLPPP!!!

Well just an FYI if you have an XP cd from a newer gateway... try to use another CD or a win98 boot disk to get onto your cd in dos mode, and then, bypassing the bootable option, run winnt.exe. this will run the setup without the added key that was burned to the disk. The program will run the setup and then *(hopefully)* ask you for the key during installation as normal. Also, you could experiment with making your own boot disk from the i386 folder and using the automation settings like with 2000 to force-add your key if the above didn't work. For more on this, see the continually expanding discussions elsewhere in this section. I personally just reformatted both PC's i had with a burned CD i got from a friend in order to add both keys.
