Title: Setting up a network.

Hi guys,

I am quite new to networks (well very new), and *hoped* to setup a peer to peer between my two PCs so they could both share my broadband connection.

My problem is, one PC is using Windows 98 with the FAT32 file system, and the other is Windows XP, using NTFS. Do the operating systems have to be the same in order to share resources and do they have to be using the same file system?

If so, I know Windows XP can probably be setup to use FAT32 (but obviously not a preferable choice), but does Windows 98 support NTFS?

Like I said, I have little to no experience setting up a network and so what I said above may not be relevant at all, but wanted to find out before I went any further.

Hey Twitch,


I remember my first network, was my mandrake box and my 2000 box, on dial up lol,  with it being just 2 PC's goto any comp store, get a cross over cable link ur pcs. i suggest hooking the broad band to the XP so u can use its crappy little fire wall lmao, anyway turn Connection Sharing on, and browse till IE 6 won't function anymore, which shouldn't take long...... mine only took 3 days lol. anyway, nope OS doesn't matter nor does file system, only thing is u wont be able to read ur XP's Hard Drive, but ur XP will Read ur 98's.  If u think about adding another comp i guess u could throw a nother nic into ur XP and cross over to the next, but for any thing like that.... id go for a router or switch. and if u want to use the net off of the other while the main is off, u'll want to go for that router. anything else reply, i think i found a new home here  /cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' /> lol

Thanks for your reply Neo. Great news that the OS's will work together, not too bothered about sharing files as long as they can share the connection.

As I only have one NIC in each PC and need to connect my cable modem to one, I will try to use the small hub I got when I was sharing my PC with XBox live.

well good luck, the hub is a good choice, that way the one doesn't have to be on for the other lol, and yes plz keep me informed would like to know how this is going!

I have the same problem, but I'm using win 2000 pro on both machines with a broadband router hub, now both machines see each other but when I enable for broadband to be shared the internet connection goes off but both machines still contact one & other.

I forgot to mention that my Internet broadband is using USB and my bradband router is using ethernet.
