Title: Need advice on a 2 computer network
Post by: Sean on March 15, 2004, 03:46:53 PM
I want to connect 2 of my computers for file sharing, gaming,  etc, using ethernet cards, both have winxp.

I know I use an ethernet crossover cable to connect the two.

I know each has to have a unique computer name but the same workgroup name

I have to enable file sharing on both of the comuters.

This is where I am stuck, what protocols are needed for this network.
1.client for ms networks
2. file & printer sharing for ms networks
is this all i need or is there more?

Do I have to assign each computer an ip address?

what further steps do I need to complete this process?

Thanks very much

Sean

As well as Client for MS networks and File and Print sharing, you will need a protocol.
I would just add TCP/IP. You don't need to configure an IP manually, but having said that I always do!
On 1st PC - IP: 192.168.0.10
On 2nd PC - IP: 192.168.0.11
Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

That should be all you need.

Some (older) games also require the IPX protocol installed. If you need it, install it on both computers and set the IPX "Frame type" to 802.3 which is the newest standard. (it should be a bit faster/more reliable that way)

buy a cheap router and let it assign the ip addresses that is the easiest way and if you get cable later both computers can get on line
