Title: Mobo CPU compatability
Post by: oblongintellect on May 04, 2004, 12:17:10 PM
My question is about FSB speeds and whether of not they play an issue in selecting an upgrade for my current CPU.

This is my MOBO:

MSI KM266 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "KM2M Combo-L" -RETAIL

- Specifications -

Supported CPU: Socket A AMD Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron Processors
Chipset: VIA ProSavageDDR KM266 + VT8235
FSB: 200/266MHz
RAM: 2x 184-pin DIMM for DDR266/200; 2x 168-pin DIMM for SDR Max 2GB
IDE: 2x UltraDMA 133 up to 4 Devices
Slots: 1x AGP 2X/4X, 3x PCI
Ports: 2xPS2,1xCOM,1xLPT,1xVGA,1xLAN,6xUSB2.0(Rear 4),Audio Ports
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC650 5.1 Channel Codec
Onboard Video: ProSavage8 2D/3D Graphic Controller
Onboard LAN: VIA VT8235 integrated MAC + VIA 6103 PHY 10/100Mbps
Form Factor: Micro ATX

I currently have a Athlon XP 1900+ installed which has a 266Mhz FSB. I would like to install a Athlon XP 3200+ which has a 400Mhz FSB. Both are socket A processors so I know it will fit, my question is will it run as intended, or would I be wasting my money?

Thanx in advance -OI

Sorry, 3200+ Barton is not supported.
It will run way below it's rated speed.
You might get away with installing a 2400+ but I wouldn't push it.
Going from a 1900+ to a 2400+ is hardly worth it. Besides you won't see or feel any more speed.
It has an AGP slot, I would get a decent video card, boost the RAM to 1gig, get a 36gig or 74gig Raptor HD and a PCI serial ATA controller card.
By just installing a Raptor HD/SATA controller to that system will net a larger performance boost than buying a new proc and motherboard.
It will feel like it's on steriods.
Just my two cents.

GTO is right you can only upgrade to another 266bus XP and that only goes up to 2400+.  You could try overclocking your 1900+.  /rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll look into the serial ATA PCI controller and HDD upgrade.
