Title: XP Home File Permissions Problem
Post by: jjacom on June 20, 2004, 01:30:10 PM
Hi

Have taken an HD from a Windows XP home machine (had a dead motherboard) and put it into another XP home machine as a slave drive, so I can get the data off. However, the slave drive had different user accounts with passwords (I do know them if this helps) and although I can see the different documents folders for these, I can't open them.

Obvious question is - how do I get into them so I can copy the data? Is fairly urgent as there are saved emails etc in there that I need to get at. Would appreciate any help you can give, many thanks

I had this problem too.  Finally called Microsoft (fee based) support yesterday.  Here's the resolution:

Hit F8 on restart
Select: safe mode
Login as Administrator
Right mouse click on the problem folder, select: "properties"--> security (tab) --> Advanced--> owners (tab)-->Select: Administrators-->check: "replace owner on subfolder and objects" Select: "apply" Then "done"...

Good luck, hope this works for you too.
