I´m sorry... i don´t really know much about computers, and I always end up deleting the wrong thing... so this time i decided to ask for some help!
I´m trying to get rid of smsc.exe by following some steps that include deleting the file driver.cab from c:\windows\driver cache\i386 (windows XP).

the tips I got say this file has been infected... what do I lose if i delete it? is it ok to get rid of it?

thanks,
Sofia

as far as i know the only thing you will lose is the application that is associated with the driver for that program. Just make sure that it is the proper driver for that program, maybe open up windows explorer find the program associated with smsc.exe double-click it and see what is listed, you may see the specific driver name and know what exactly what you are going to delete.
