Post by: Merk on December 27, 2004, 04:14:59 AM
So i lost rundll32.exe. I had a message saying the file was missing so I got it back from a pretty trustworthy site, i even scanned this file but i get a message now saying  "this application has failed to start because k9371937.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" i'm not to familer with this or what it means, but it wont let me read Cd's, edit options, or run programs from Cd's. its a pain and i dont know how to fix it. Anyone have any suggestions..i'm in need of deperate help! my computer has pretty much turned into a paper weight cause of this.

That sounds suspicious
Can I have a closer look please if you can run this
Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to see if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer

Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from HERE (http://\"https://ssl.perfora.net/tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe\") or HERE (http://\"http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe\")
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

EDIT--If this doesn't show anything we can try alternate routes
I hope to see your log tonight, if not I will catch up to you in the morning, my time anyways
No work tomorrow  /tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

I cant even finish a hijack scan, it says it encounters an error about 5 seconds into the scan. Its one of those windows error scans, similair to the (non-responding) ones you get from internet explorers or other non responding programs

Would you mind if I see the hijackthis log Merk

Just saw your last response, can you try running this version of Hijackthis
I'm just checking to see if it will run

~Removed link~
You will have to UNZIP this one before running it
Are you having problems with most of your programs running?
I would like to see what other Malware you may have on your computer
It's a very small download and doesn't take long to run and post

I have links to tools that can help clean up problems
and other tools to keep you clean  /wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

I would gladly post the hijackthis log, but i cannot finish any scans, at the same exact point in time, every time during the scan it says an error has occured, and it doesnt finish. I do have the Hijackthis, i installed it and ran it, but cannot finish a scan, the error occurs

**edit** i see the new link, trying that as we speak

Don't forget to Unzip it

We should get all of it

I'm going to post a fix and then I'll need to see another Hijackthis log
But first can you let me know what the error stated when you ran version 1.99

Can you also post a fresh hijackthis log
Include the top header which shows Hijackthis version and Operating system and time of scan
or just edit your last reply and show me the top header

Alright as far was waht the error stated, here goes, i get all of it in the best described details as i can.

1st screen says " hijackthis has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience'

'If you you in the middle of something. the information you were working on might be lost"

"for more information about this error click here"

2nd window, where i clicked

"errpr signature"
"appname: hijackthis.exe         appver: 1.99.0.0          modname:ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217            offset0006112b"

"to view technical information about the report click here"

3rd window after i clicked the next one
it shows the technical information and is hundreds thousands of digits long, if you wish me to copy all this (i cant copy and paste, it would all have to be done manuelly, then i will)

I won't see your updated log till the morning but for now I need you to download a few tools, a couple of these you can hang onto and keep for free
All the tools I mention are free
 /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

First,
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05 (http://\"http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/\") <<try the link from Download.com
Ensure you have this version

After installation---Open Ad-Aware
ensure to click the check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Don't run a Scan yet, but update for now

Next:
Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3 (http://\"http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html\")
When Installing, please don't enable TEA TIMER, it's a great addon to Spybot but it can get in our way to do any manual fixes.. This can be enabled at a later time if you want it
After installation--Click the Update button on the left, in the window on the right click the
SEARCH FOR UPDATES button, Check and download all updates
Again, Don't run a Scan yet

Next: Download and save to desktop
The Standalone version of CWShredder.exe (http://\"http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe\")

Now that you have the tools, let's try some Fixes:
You may want to print the rest of this out, or save it to a Notepad file on your desktop,  I'm going to need you to Restart the computer into SAFE MODE
This link will explain how to do it
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=4#_Section4\")

Now in safe mode, ensure you checked for updates ahead of time with Spybot and Ad-Aware

Open up CWShredder---Click the FIX button and allow it to fix all problems
You will need to Restart your computer after the fixes
Please Restart back into Safe Mode

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Wintools for IE service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Access your Add/Remove Programs and Remove if Found Wintools or similiar

Stay in safe mode
Open Ad-Aware
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process
Please restart back into safe mode again

Open Spybot:
Click the "Search and Destroy" Button
In the right window, click the
Check for Problems Let it complete it's scanning---Ensure to check and FIX everything in RED---they should be checked by default

RESTART your computer to finish the Cleaning process
This time you can Restart back into Normal mode

Post back with a fresh Hijackthis log and we will manually fix the rest

Like I said, Spybot and Ad-Aware are 2 programs you can hang onto
CWShredder we will get rid of later

Do as much of the above as you can before posting back, thanks

Looking better, let's try and get the  rest

Can you please download this version of Rundll32_xp.zip (http://\"http://www.freewebs.com/benditup/rundll32_xp.zip\")
Don't unzip it yet
To get the above link to work properly with IE, right click on it and Copy Shortcut
Paste it into the IE address bar and hit GO

Download to desktop Rem.zip
http://forums.skads.org/index.php?act=Atta...type=post&id=72 (http://\"http://forums.skads.org/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=72\")
UNZIP all the contents to a folder

Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Disconnect from the Internet at this point and stay off until we are done
You may want to print this out

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMMRealtime] C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1148942700-2552189465-2221179514-1007\Dc5\pcmm.exe /R

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Red Swoosh EDN Client] C:\Program Files\RSNet\RSEDNClient.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ahst] C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\iebs.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: RemindU - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0.htm

O9 - Extra button: RemindU - {16BF42FD-CA0A-4f48-819D-B0343254DD67} - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart your Computer into Safe Mode
Find and delete this file if it exists
C:\WINDOWS\system32\k9371937.dll <--file, it may not exist

Navigate to where you unzipped Rem.zip
Double click on remv3.bat
Allow to run

Unzip Rundll32.exe to your
C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder
Allow it to overwrite if prompted

See if you can now Access your Add/Remove Programs, if you can could you Remove
Wintools
RedSwoosh

If you can or can't follow these directions also
Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\iebs.exe <--file

C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools <--folder
C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU <--folder

Restart back into Normal mode

In your C:\ drive should be a file called log.txt. Post the contents of that file here.

Also, see if you can now run a scan with Hijackthis 1.99, if not post back a fresh log from 1.98.2

there you go, i do however get a few pop ups at the begging of a windows log on, but its for wildtangent saying it cannot find it. I assume its a good sign that it cannot find it and i can merely overlook these warnings. My computer is useable now once again. However my diskdrive still doesnt read the discs. I'm unsure what the problem is here. It does however read them if i put the CD in and restart the computer. Not to sure whats going on or if i my disc drive just stinks.

You also had/have a Rootkit infection
one of the hints is that Hijackthis 1.99 won't run
Files usually found bad are 4 letters long and many start with ms

msi.dll is legitimate
Can you navigate to msde.dll and Right click on it
Left click properties
Let me know Date created and size
Can you also click Version and see if you can find any other info on it

This line may indicate why your having trouble with your CD/DVD player
Don't touch it, just indicating
You may have to reinstall the software for your player
O23 - Service: GEARSecurity_BackUp - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSEC.EXE (file missing)

Here's some more info
Quote
t is a driver for CD-RW, released by GEAR software and used by iTunes and some other software to providing support for burning CDs, and usually installed on Windows XP as a service. Its default location is "%SYSTEMROOT%\system32". On some machines, GEARSecurity can not be started up due to some uncertain incompatible problems.

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32\msde.dll
and send msde.dll to the recycle bin for now

Make sure that is the correct spelling

We need to disable System Restore to clear all your restore points so you don't restore any nasties

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Don't restart yet

Note: To re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your computer
Re-enable system restore
Find and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--folder

Post back a fresh log afterwards

Can you also try opening some programs like Outlook Express and let me know if you experience any problems

Title: Missing k9371937.dll
Post by: guestolo on December 27, 2004, 09:27:06 PM
I just missed one Merk
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - Startup: Download Plus.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer and delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe

If you haven't done so already, ensure you enable system restore again

I would also recommend that you install this free utility to disable some other startup entries

Codestuff's Starter (http://\"ftp://ftp.telusplanet.net/pub/simtelnet/winnt/deskstrt/start561.zip\")
Unzip it and install

Track down what you don't need on startup with these links
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pa...es/tasklist.htm (http://\"http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm\")
http://computercops.biz/modules.php?name=StartupList (http://\"http://computercops.biz/modules.php?name=StartupList\")

You don't need the Ultimate Troubleshooter
You can install Codestuff's starter

Enter the task Manager and end process on this if you decide to disable it
realsched.exe
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
Rename realsched.exe >>> realsched.old
This will ensure that Realplayers updater won't startup
Has no effect on Realplayers performance

Then use Codestuffs starter to disable it from running

Check out what you need from running on startup with those links I supplied
You may see increased system startup and better system performance by disabling unneeded entries on startup
Check within the Programs options or Preferences to try and disable beforehand
eg...
qttask.exe
SVAPLAYER.EXE
CFD.exe
IPMon32.exe
OSA.EXE

To enhance your privacy and security
You should set up protection against future attacks

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link==Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Let me know how everything is running after you have done the above

One thing I forgot to add
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- GEARSecurity_BackUp

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Does this resolve your CD problem?

Did you have Itunes installed?

Go into your device manager
Right click MY Computer>>left click properties
Hardware tab>>>Device Manager

To you see any problems in device manager>>any yellow exclamation marks
What listed under DVD/CDrom Drives if you click on the +
Double click on it and see if it is working properly

I am not running itunes and everything is a.o.k under device manager. Like i have said before, when you put a CD in and restart the computer it reads the disc that was in from the restart, once you take it out it doesnt read it. I'm not sure if thats any hint to what the problem is.

What listed under DVD/CDrom Drives if you click on the +?
Your sure you don't have any error codes when you double click on your device

Can you also try this
Download this reg file to desktop
autorunenable.reg (http://\"http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/autorunenable.reg\")

Double click on it and allow it to merge
Restart your computer, does that help you

The autorunenable did not help, and i checked again and did not see any problems with my drives through the device manager.

Without having a clue as to what CDrom you have
Under mine I have
Samsung CDRW/DVD SN-324-F

I will have to assume you don't need any special drivers

Go into device manager and uninstall yours and reboot and and let Windows Detect new hardware and let it reinstall the drivers
You may have to have you CD ready

Go into your Device manager and write down what CD/DVD you have

I would recommend that you fix this one with Hijackthis
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SVAPlayer] C:\Program Files\SVA Player\SVAPLAYER.EXE

restart your computer and delete C:\Program Files\SVA Player folder

I can find nothing but bad writeups about it, considered spyware

I'll have to look into your other problems later

Since you didn't take my advice and install Codestuff's starter and disable any of those I recommended I can't track it down to that

You can use Msconfig to try and disable some startup entries to see if any are the culprit
Can you try this
Go to START>>Run>>type in msconfig
Under the startup tab, take the check out of
C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

Restart your computer and see if you can run a CD
Don't insert a CD until you have rebooted
Then Double click on MYComputer and try running it from there

Codestuff's starter doesn't just work on it's own
You have to use those links I supplied earlier and see what you need running on startup

Look at the recommendations I gave you earlier
This may not help the CD problem, but will help speed up system startup

After you track down what you don't need running on startup
Try disabling from startup from within the program and then use Starter
to uncheck the run entry under the Startup tab

P.S. Don't go crazy and disable everything, but the links I supplied earlier will give you a good indication of what you don't need on startup

When i Put a disc in one of my drives i get this message. It says "Windows is cannot read from this disk. The disk might be currupted, or it could using a format not compatible with windows." Any sign as to what that might mean? I get this message with ever disc i put in.

Hmm, I may be out of ideas
Can you put a CD in the CD or DVD player and recognize it when you bootup?
Edit <---I meant the Windows XP cd
Do you know how to do a Repair?
Insert it before you boot up
You may be able to do a Repair
Set your BIOS to boot from the CD first

You will probably have to reinstall Service Pack 1a if you go this route
Just let me know if it recognizes it

Did you, or have you had any other software installed, such as DVD emulators or CD emulators
Any other burning software?

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
In the left pane, expand Event Viewer, and then click System to view the system log in the right pane for error messages that pertain to the CD-ROM drive or SCSI controller.

Did you double click on the Error messages?
Any indication of what the errors are related too?

The error's state this "This device, /Device/CdRom0 has a bad block."
While the warning states this "An error has been detected on device /Device/CdRom0 during a paging operation."

It may be a software issue if it's coming from both drives
Or check the IDE cables, are both drives on the same chain?

First thing I would do...
You may have Nero's InCd burning software installed
Uninstall it completely and then restart your computer

Run a Registry cleaner through your machine
Here's a free one---Regseeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm (http://\"http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm\")

After installation make sure the backup before deletion is checked
Click Clean the Registry>>>OK
Let it finish scanning and then select all and right click and delete

Restart your computer again

Any help?

Can you try this also
From Doug Knox site--- download the zipped file to desktop
Unzip the contents and double click on the EXE to run it
When it's done Restart your computer
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip (http://\"http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip\")

Neither of these works, the dougknox one instantly said finshed and told me to restart...is that how its supposed to be?

Under the RegSeeker there is a an option under clean up registry it says "Scan drives for old exe entries in regristy" should i try this option?

I'm out of ideas, if I come across something I'll post back
Besides possibly being a hardware issue
Did you uninstall InCd?
Sorry, you may want to try somewhere else for an answer

The only other option I can think of at this time is to try a Repair install on XP
Then reinstall service Pack 1a

Would InCDUDF be part of InCd?? Because i ahve incdudf on my computer its titled InCDUDF Reader(ahead software). It has no description or the amount of space it takes up under add/remove programs.

I typed InCd UDF on yahoo and nero came up as its first result...i take it that it is a part of nero and possibly worth the gamble of deletion. But i will not remove till you say so, just cause i am unsure what it exactly is.

Looks like the best place for me to start so here I am also having this K9371937.dll missing problem, no, I deleted like a moron, but anywho I'm having difficulties as the outcome. Actually in truth I deleted the rundll & rundll32 applications thinking they were part of the large assortment of crap and wannabehelpfulprograms(that aren't at all helpful so far as I can tell) that in my belief AOL(bane of my technological universe) has been kind enough to put on my computer. Sorry for the rant, I hate computers 24/7.

I've downloaded the HJT program and put it in the folder mentioned somwhere on the second post of this thread. I'm currently running a scan w/ HJT and figured it would be better at this point for somebody who knows what to do in a situation like this to maybe point me in the direction of what to do next. I'll hold off on posting the log and all that. If I should read further into the thread to maybe speed things up and make things easier on anybody let me know. I'll be here fairly often as I have nothing better to do for/in the near future.
