Title: Invalid System Disk
Post by: kabusho on January 05, 2005, 12:57:09 AM
Need help! Here is our sad story: we have an HP desktop and a rather old 'Toshiba Satellite' laptop. My wife was moving files from the desktop to the laptop on a floppy, moved them to "My Documents" and worked from there. After a hard day's work on some files, she turned off the laptop. Upon switching it on again the next day, the "Toshiba" logo appeared, and then a black screen with the message "Invalid System Disk: Replace the disk and then press any key". It doesn't allow access to anything, and every key I touch, the damn message shows up again. There is no diskette in the floppy drive. And- when we inserted the original diskette back to our HP desktop, it recognized a "VBS/Redlof@M" virus on it, which I assume is the culprit for the problem. We did a virus check on the HP, actually identified it there, and deleted the bastard.
O.K., so I read some forums on the web, and tried the following: since I don't have the original boot disk (Win98), I copied one from the web and put it in the floppy drive, but the same message appears. I am not sure what else I can do… since we really want to save the files off the laptop, should I remove the laptop hard drive and try to hook it up to the HP desktop? Will that spread the virus again? Anyway, whatever advice you have, please put it in the most basic layman terms (first press this then press that, etc.). Thanks a lot guys.
