When I installed the Windows SP2 update it messed my PC up. The computer would continually restart itself over and over and over again, never reaching the Windows XP logo screen. To fix this I reinstalled Windows from the CD I had.
This did the trick and my computer booted up fine. The only problem being that now my DVD drive and my CD drives are no longer recognised. Any ideas as to why this is and how I can get them back? I’ve had the computer scan for new hardware and it doesn’t seem to “see” them. When I turn on my PC both of the drives lights come on as it boots up so there is at least power going to them.

HI Stickmartin
A bad install of SP2 may be a good indication of Adware or Viruses residing on the computer
Did you reinstall over top or did you do a Clean Install?
Would you mind a closer look please
Can you Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to help identify if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer
Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT
Now you will have C:\HJT
Download Hijackthis from CLICK HERE (http://\"https://ssl.perfora.net/tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe\") or CLICK HERE (http://\"http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe\")
Save it to that new folder
Do a SCAN and Save a Log file---Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important
Side note
Are there any error messages in Device Manager?
Any error codes?
Right click MyComputer---Left click properties
Hardware tab--Device Manager---Expand(+) DVD\CD Rom drives
Double click on your drive
Look for any errors
Do you know how to edit the registry
You may want to check out this link by Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314060 (http://\"http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314060\")
I would make a new Restore Point beforehand just to be safe
After editing the registry you may even want to enter Device Manager and unstall the drives and then Restart the computer and let them reinstall
Let me know how you make out

Thanks very much for the advice. I've scanned my PC with HJT and the resultant log is posted below. To answer your other questions, I intalled over the top of my old installation - a total clean install seemed a bit daunting!
I keep my virus scanner up to date and I use Adaware quite often so I doubt that my computer had anything "dodgy" on it when I installed. I now also use Firefox, and ever since switching to it Adaware has had nothing to find (which must be good!)
I checked for error messages in Device Manager and there isn't even a mention of either of my drives on it. Could it be something to do with my Bios?
I know, in theory, how to edit my registry but I wouldn't where to start and what to edit. I have Resistry Mechanic 4 installed which claims to tidy and clean up my registry.
Again, any help you could give me would me much appreciated.
All the best,
Chris

Let's try a little cleanup on your computer
Download and save to desktop
CD\DVDfix.zip (http://\"http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip\") by Doug Knox
UNZIP the contents to desktop
Don't run it yet
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
I'm going to ask you to fix red.clientapps
Seems harmless but is related to Red Sheriff spyware

Do a Disk Cleanup..>>Start>>run>>type in cleanmgr
Post back a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards
Could you also Open Ad-Aware and click on "Details"
Let me know Reference No. and Internal Build
Thanks

OK, my computer has hopefully been cleaned up a bit - I've removed the listed HJT entries, ran the CD/DVD fix programme and also carried out the other instructions.
The version of Ad-aware I am using is:
Ad-aware SE Personal
Reference Number SE1R25 11.01.2005
Internal Build:30
Here is my new HJT log:

Looks good
Hows everything on your end?
You may be interested in these 2 programs, you definitely need the first one
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
The O16's we removed were bad ActiveX controls
You should set up extra protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link==Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free! or IE-SPYAD2.EXE Free!
Regular IE-Spyad for the individual user or IE-Spyad 2 for global protection(All users) on your computer
You only need one or the other
With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Thanks Guestolo - it's a relief to know that my PC is now free of malicious junk etc. I'll install and run SpywareBlaster when I return home from work (not long to go now
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> )
However, there is still no mention of my DVD and CD drives on my computer. Was the XP_DVD\CD fix programme meant to solve this?
Cheers,
Chris
PS - An email my friend sent to me today was blocked by my firms virus software. Have you got any idea what virus / trojan this message relates to as I'm sure his PC is virus free.
The virus was identified as: >>> Possible MalWare 'Exploit/Phishing-msn.com-85c4' variant found in '1733325_7X_PM8_EMQ_MH__message.htm'. Heuristics score: 400
