Title: SSICO.ICO thing on my computer
Post by: Guest_Josh on January 24, 2005, 03:11:08 PM
I have this thing on my computer.  Causes my desktop to have this :warning you are in Danger sign on it.

I have tied just about every suggestion from every place on the net to get rid of it, it goes away, but then sure enough it returns.

Anybody know of a way to clear this off the computer for good.

Thanks so Much

I need to know what operating system your running
Can you follow these directions?
If your running Windows XP it's a good idea to make a Fresh Restore point
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a Restore point
Name it and click Create
This is just to ensure you have a backup from this point on

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

This is supplied by Trend Micro
# Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT
, then press Enter.
# In the left panel, expand(+) the following
+HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Internet Explorer
+Desktop
+Components
# Still in the left panel, locate and Right click on and delete the subkey:
0
# Close Registry Editor.

Using Windows Explorer and/or Search, locate and delete the following files
they are in bold >>>Not all may exist
• %Windows%\desktop.html '
%Windows%\Web\desktop.html
• %Windows%\SSICO.ICO
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

After that is done, Restart your computer

Back in Windows
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05 (http://\"http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/\")
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer back to finish the cleaning process

To ensure nothing else needs to be removed
Can you Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to help identify if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer

Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from CLICK HERE (http://\"https://ssl.perfora.net/tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe\") or CLICK HERE (http://\"http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe\")
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN and Save a Log file---Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

I have completed doing what you suggested.

I first did the stuff in REGEDIT, the deleted the files you listed to delete, then restarted the computer, and everything came back.

So i then redid the whole process, then ran adaware, with the updates, then restarted the computer, and once again, all the files have returned, and my desktop screen still has the Warning you are in danger add on it.

I have now done the hijackthis, and am posting you the log.

Thanks so much for the help you have given me so far, and hope this log will be able to give you another suggestion for me to use.

Josh

I have completed doing what you suggested.

Please redownload hijackthis and save it to a Permanent folder as I instructed earlier
Don't run it from your Temporary folder, backups will be lost when we delete the contents of your temp folders>>>I supplied you direct download links to 2 locations
and instructions for creating a Permanent folder
ONLY AFTER that is done.......

Download and UNZIP to a folder Hoster by Toadbee (http://\"http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip\")

Please enter Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta program and disable ALL Real time protection until you are all clean, it may be getting in the way

Print these instructions out please, if you can, if not save this to a Notepad file on your desktop for easy access

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Restart your computer into SAFE MODE (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039\")
Log in with the user that is having the desktop problems

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools Section>>Open Process Manager
Kill this process if still running
C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vxh8jkdq5.exe

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT
, then press Enter.
# In the left panel, expand(+) the following
+HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Internet Explorer
+Desktop
+Components
# Still in the left panel, locate and Right click on and delete the subkey:
0
# Close Registry Editor.

Open your Add/Remove programs and remove SideStep if found
Don't restart the computer

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
Also, do a search for them

C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe <--this file, exact file name
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vxh8jkdq5.exe <--file
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe028.dll

C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html '

C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.

Post by: Guest_Josh on January 26, 2005, 07:29:52 PM
Well,  I have done everything you told me to do, and am VERY excited to say, that what ever was taking over my desktop , appears to be gone.  THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!

I did try to access my task manager, and it tells me that it has been locked by the sytem administrator.  I had noticed that that had happened when this whole situation started, but sorry I never mentioned that to you.

I have also run a new hijackthis log, and am posting it for you to look at.

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do.

Here it is:

===Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the Whole contents of the Quote box to notepad
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Task.reg

Save this file on the desktop
This should help to fix your Task manager

Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000
"**del.DisableTaskMgr"=" "

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DisableCAD"=dword:00000000

Double click on Task.reg and allow it to merge to the Registry

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00719/sb028.cab (http://\"http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00719/sb028.cab\")

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

The 016's are just ActiveX controls, they will be reinstalled if needed
You can fix any other 016 you didn't purposely install
Make sure you fix download.sidestep.com Active X

RESTART your computer

Task manager working?

If everything is running better
you should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature (http://\"http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm\")

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link==Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free! or IE-SPYAD2.EXE Free!

Regular IE-Spyad for the individual user or IE-Spyad 2 for global protection(All users) on your computer
You only need one or the other

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Clean those Temp folders, you should regularly(At least once every couple weeks)
If you would like to try this free utility to do it for you
Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies,prefeth folder, etc...
Windows Cleanup (http://\"http://www.antispyware.nextdesigns.net/installs/cleanup.php?type=exe\")
Open Windows CleanUp,
Click the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files and then Log off and back on
