Title: Re-occurring programs and popups
Post by: tb1023 on February 08, 2005, 07:21:22 AM
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

I run windows XP and I am having problems with several programs that will not delete.  I see here that you have helped alot of people fix problems on their pc's and was hoping you could do the same for me.  Is there any tools I can download to rid my system of these persistant programs?

Thanks

I'll try and help when I can tb1023   /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Can you Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to help identify if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer

Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from CLICK HERE (http://\"https://ssl.perfora.net/tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe\") or CLICK HERE (http://\"http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe\")
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN and Save a Log file---Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

I downloaded the program HJT and when I ran it like you requested.
It came up with an error and froze up so I couldn't copy and paste it here.  What now?

Hijackthis 1.98.2 (http://\"http://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/hijackthis1982.zip\")

From that link download the earlier version of Hijackthis

You will have to save it to a different folder than 1.99

Make sure you create a new folder to unzip it to.....

Do a Scan>>Scan will change to Save log

Save it and post the log results

Access your Add/Remove Programs via Control Panel
Uninstall if found
WebSearch Toolbar
WebSearch Tools
Search Assistant
Win-Tools Easy Installer

# Do not reboot until they have all been removed even if prompted.

# When you are uninstalling the last program you can then reboot when prompted

When your back in Windows

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05 (http://\"http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/\")
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to Normal mode to finish the cleaning process

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log and we'll get rid of the rest

If you can do all of the above, can you try posting back with a log from Hijackthis 1.99, thanks
But please supply a new log regardless

I'm going to recommend you fix the entries to Viewpoint, considered optional,
I wouldn't keep it, but up to you
READ THIS
http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/430-p1.php (http://\"http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/430-p1.php\")

If you decide to remove it
Can you include it with the fixes in Hijackthis

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com (http://\"http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com\")

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your Add/Remove Programs and Remove
Viewpoint

Restart your computer

Delete these folders if they exist
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <--folder
C:\Program Files\AWS

Post back one last hijackthis log afterwards

Here is the logfile you requested. I did away with the viewpoint, I didn't know I had it as it is never used.  So how does my pc look? Is there any other problem that you see? And I do have another question for you though.  What is the best way to avoid pop ups? Is there a good program that will eliminate them?

Thanks again for your help.

Title: Re-occurring programs and popups
Post by: guestolo on February 13, 2005, 01:24:40 AM
Are you still having problems with popups?

You can have hijackthis fix these 2 entries
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

I thought they would of went back to default when you removed Viewpoint

If you didn't purposely install the next ones, fix them too
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll

Restart
Could you also go into IE's Internet options, under the Program tab
Reset Web Settings
And post one more log, thanks

Internet Explorer with Service pack 2 has a builtin popup blocker
Settings can be found in IE>>TOOLS section

Of course you could use a different browser
I use this one all the time (Mozilla Firefox)>>Take a look>>Also has a built in popup blocker
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ (http://\"http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/\")

You should also set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
IE-Spyad works fine with XP SP2
