Download and UNZIP to a folder Hoster by Toadbee (http://\"http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip\")
We'll need this later

Restart your computer into Safe mode (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=2#_Section2\")

Access your Add/Remove programs and remove
Wintools if found

Stay in safe mode
Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNELS32.EXE <--file, notice the spelling
C:\WINDOWS\upaww.exe <--file
c:\ied_s7.cab
c:\wx.cab

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WINTOOLS <--this folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WebSiteViewer <--folder

Open Hoster and click the "Restore Original Hosts"

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BDF6CE3D-F5C5-4462-9814-3C8EAC330CA8} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vvfu] C:\WINDOWS\upaww.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kernels32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SystemTools] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kernels32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Shell] Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kernels32.exe

O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\ied_s7.cab

O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\wx.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\wx.cab

Optionally, fix the next one, not needed on startup
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ARES LITE EDITION\ARES.EXE" -h

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page
Do a disk cleanup
START>>RUN>>Type in cleanmgr
Hit OK
Ensure temp and temporary internet files are checked

Restart back to Normal mode

Do updated scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot
RESTART the computer after each scan if bad guys found

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log afterwards

Just some leftovers to get

But first, if everything is running better
You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature (http://\"http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm\")

BEFORE you restart your computer to clear the restore folders
Could you do another scan with Hijackthis and fix checked these entries with All other windows closed

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Exit hijackthis
Restart your computer
Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

You may also consider visiting Windows updates and getting all Latest Critical Updates and Service Packs
this is important in keeping your system secure
You will be prompted to restart your computer afterwards
Revisit Windows Updates and make sure you have them all
Don't install the Recommended updates unless it's something you want or require

I noticed your running an older version of Hijackthis
Could you download the newest version from my signature below
Run a scan and post a log from it, thanks

Title: Smashin this
Post by: Guest on May 24, 2005, 01:22:40 AM
I was having almost the same problem than F7_firecat I did what you told him to do, but I still have a problem... my desktop was changed by the next text: "windows system has detected spyware activity. Some system functions are blocked out. Windows recommends you to clean your PC with a spyware removal tool. This has  to be done as soon as possible to prevent loss of data". Adittionally I can't access to the task manager it says that was disabled by an administrator. Here is the last report of hijackthis, PLEASE help me!!!
