Title: Win2000 Boot CD ??
Post by: Zeke on August 12, 2001, 07:10:19 PM
Why does everyone want a Win2000 Boot CD?  Is Win2000 that unstable?  If it is I will stay with Win98.

They want it, so you don\'t have to make 4 floppies to boot from, if you want to install win2k or have to repair an install.  Just like Win98 retail CD\'s.  Pop it in, and it will ask you if you want to boot from the CD or the hard drive and if you choose from CD, you can boot from it and use it like a win98 floppy (has all the programs on there, like fdisk, format, etc.) or start the install from there.

The bootable W2k CD is definitely a must-have. Normally, when doing an install, it takes about 10-15 minutes just to read the 4 boot floppies. Well, with the bootable CD, about 20 seconds on my box. Mainly just a timesaver. W2k is a whole lot more stable than 98, but me personally, I do a clean install atleast once a month just to clean it up because of all the software that I \"try\" and sometimes I may run into some problems because of third party software.

The salesman told me that the Win2000 CD was an autobooting CD and it pretty much just takes off & installs the OS. No problems.   What are the 4 floppies you have to make used for in the installation?
I hope to have my computer assembled this week & will try to install it.

Thanks,
Z

I beleive that those looking are people who did a \"slipstream\" of service pack 1 or 2, or those who have a copy of the install files instead of an original CD. Those who slipstreamed should do a search for the exact phrase \"Making a Bootable Windows 2000 CD with Service Pack Integrated\". You just might find what you need. Those with copies should go get legal copies before asking....

Yes, the instructions I posted work fine if you have a FULL CD.  I know that a lot of people just downloaded the install files, and probably want to make it bootable.  There are other files besides the basic install files that are needed, to make the CD bootable (and are generally left out of such \"distributions\").  That\'s why I left out the files that are needed to boot the cd, which you already have with a legal (or a full copy) CD; we don\'t promote warez.

What? I do have a full CD, a legal copy. Why would you think that everyone is a thief? Maybe because you\'re one?

Post by: Josetann on August 16, 2001, 04:20:19 AM
Nothing there suggested you were.  His post simply said anyone who was using a copy, to get the legal version first before asking for help.  Probably because someone with a minimum warez download of it, will never get it to work.  If you have a legit version, then it can be made to work.  You may have problems, but at least you/we aren\'t wasting our time on a lost cause.

Cool. I took it the wrong way. My mistake, sorry that I lashed back and said a worse thing. I did follow your directions and they were excellent! Everything worked great except for the Office 2000 CD Key. I can\'t seem to get that one working. I found the setup.inf file but there is only one area on my CD and that\'s for the customer name, no CD key input area anywhere.

Post by: Josetann on August 16, 2001, 08:57:05 AM
No hard feelings.

Yes, the PID area is not in the setup.inf file.  You have to copy it in, then it\'ll work like a charm.

Any body know how to mod the OEM version of the CD to make it \"auto-enter\" the CD key? I saw the directions for the MSDN version, but it doesn\'t work for the OEM. The last 3 of the pid is OEM for the version that I have...

The directions should be similar.

The best way that I\'ve found is to run the setupmgr.exe file from deploy.cab (comes on win2k cd under the supporttools directory) and generate an answer file.  If you place this file in the i386 directory on a bootable Win2K install CD and call it \"WINNT.SIF\" it will be used as an answer file for installs that boot off of the CD.

You can specify all kinds of things in that file.  I would
recommend a good read of the unattend.doc that comes in that deploy.cab file and hand editing the WINNT.SIF file.  It\'s pretty cool the things you can put in there.

For further customizations you can place files in a directory called $OEM$ off of the ROOT of the CD (NOT under the i386 directory like on network installs) and the Win2K install will use this as a OEM install files directory when installing from booting off the CD.  You can place drivers under there and place commands to be run during the setup into the \"cmdlines.txt\" file.  I put a customized NTUSER.DAT file onto the cd and called a a batch file from cmdlines.txt that overwrote the default user\'s with it to setup defaults for the machine.  I also put a .reg file and merged a bunch of keys into the registry inside the same batch file.  It\'s really nice to do that way because you set the defaults for all the users.  I get rid of all that frilly web stuff in the Explorer folder views before I even see it.

It\'s also great to put network card drivers onto the CD for cards that aren\'t supported by default in WIN2K.  It\'s such a pain to go dig up or create a driver CD for each type of NIC you run into while doing installs.  I put them all in there and added them to the cd using the $1 directory that get\'s mapped to the primary win2k drive (usually C) under Driversmachinetypenic folders and then added them to the
OemPnPDriversPath in the WINNT.SIF file so that it installs the drivers for the cards during the setup process.  It\'s really slick.

HINT:  You can use the %USERPROFILE% variable in a batch file running out of cmdlines.txt to reference the default user\'s directory.  It\'s usually C:Documents and SettingsDefault User but not always if you are upgrading.
That\'s how I copy the NTUSER.DAT file into the default user profile directory.  It didn\'t seem to work if I put the command into the cmdlines.txt file but it worked in a batch file called from cmdlines.txt.  The working directory for commands run out of the cmdlines.txt is the $OEM$ directory on the CD so you can reference files under there relatively i.e. .NTUSER.DAT  If you want to poke around put a cmd.exe line into cmdlines.txt and run a shell.

Good luck

I got all of my hardware installed, MoBo,CPU,HS&F, HDs,CDs,Video,Mem,......
turned on power, went into BIOS, made settings,Inserted the Win2000 Cd, Powered down, Powered up, answered a couple of prompts and it installed Win2000. It did not ask for any boot floppies, the Win2000 CD was self booting.
I\'m kinda dense, again WHY are the 4 boot floppies needed that everone wants?
The Epox 8K7A+ MoBo/RAID 0, AMD 1.4/1.6GHz, IBM 75GXP 30GB HDs, Crucial 2100 512MB is a great system

I have put the IE6 files on my bootable CD and set the ie6setup.exe to run in quiet mode via the [commands] section of the winnt32.sif file.  I first install all of the latest hotfixes in quiet mode (set to not reboot), then run the ie install in quiet mode.  One more reboot and you\'re all set!

Because, if someone does not have a CD-rom, BIOS, or a CD that isn\'t bootable for what ever reasons, then you need to create the four floppy disks under the folder named BOOTDISKS.   Is that clear?

Once these disks are made, then you WILL have a WAY to boot the computer, and further your failed atempt with the CD-ROM way, and install very happily the OS\' that ran stable for at least 120 days under a very strenous test.  (correct me?)

well..

I\'m confused - what files did you \"leave out\", and left them out from where?  I have the full Win2K CD and followed the instructions in your article (using CDRWin 4.0a beta), but my finished CD gives me \"NTLDR not found\" - won\'t boot.

What files might I have \"left out\"??

Thanks for any help!
Title: Win2000 Boot CD ??
Post by: Josetann on September 04, 2001, 02:58:34 PM
You misunderstood.  There are several files needed to make win2k bootable, I only supply the boot.bin file.  As long as you have a full, legal version of win2k then you have all the other files necessary.  It\'s if you have a stripped-down warez (pirated) version, that they often leave out any \"unnecessary\" files.
Title: Win2000 Boot CD ??
Post by: Anonymous on September 04, 2001, 05:05:01 PM
you say the reason you don\'t post this info is because you don\'t condone piracy.

somehow i doubt not being able to create a bootable cd is going to make much difference to people wanting to install a pirated version. you can use any dos boot disk you have lying around and simply run setup.exe off the cd.

and yet, you give information on how to bypass having to enter a serial # during the installation. don\'t you think this is a touch hypocritical?
Title: Win2000 Boot CD ??
Post by: Josetann on September 04, 2001, 08:05:02 PM
The whole point is that if you have a full version of Win2k, and you follow the instructions, it \"should\" work just fine.  There\'s exceptions to the rule sure, but nothing is 100%.  We get enough questions about the guide as it is, without people being concerned about adding extra files to the cd which they should already have.

All I\'m saying is if you have a warez version, and you can\'t make the cd bootable, don\'t bother asking for help.  If you have a fullversion and are having problems, we\'ll try to help you out.

As far as the serial number, it\'s merely editing a simple text file.  Now if it involved hex editing, or replacing files, we would not get into that (that would be in a grey area at best, and illegal at worst).  Besides, like you said if you want to install a pirated version, you\'d have no problems anyways.

I *do* have the full version... that\'s why I\'m asking.  Is it too much to expect that you could mention WHICH files we need to put on the CD in order for it to be bootable?  I don\'t know what I did wrong.

Thanks,

There\'s no need then, as long as you have the fullversion from MS, you have all the files you need.  Off the top of my head I believe that the two cdrom* files in the root of the cd are needed (cdrom_ip.5 and cdrom_nt.5) and in the i386 directory you need bootfix.bin.  Again these are already there, so they shouldn\'t be missing.

Some people had success putting the NTLDR file in the root of the cd.  Others just used different media.  If you follow the directions exactly it\'ll work most of the time, but even I have had unexplained problems at times.  My best advice, is to use a CDRW disk to test on, until you can verify it works.

I have checked all the files which needed to be in the root..Indeed they are already there....So I downloaded just one file from your site (BIN file) and followed every steps. So what can i do now???? Thanks in advance........

I solved this by putting all the files for the iso in the root of my HD, then in CDWin I selected the \"Preserve Full Pathnames\" box.  All the files then have correct pathname, as they were in the root of your HD.

Nice one Eric..!

How ever questions do arise;

I used setupmgr.exe (trying) to avoid the \'press F6 & insert disk\' part of the setup (my raid controller isn\'t supported )

now it tells me I must run \'unattend.bat\' so in other words:
either I use a boot disk (floppy) and run unattend.bat or its back to \"good\" old F6 & floppy ..sigh..

the entire idea behind making a SP2 boot disk was avoiding the floppy\'s, does anyone know of a way to slip my Ultra driver onto the boot disc that I migth boot floppy less & still have access to my raid drive?

if any one knows how to do this please don\'t hesitate to mail me : mailto:KafplowEmail Removed

If you rename unattend.txt to winnt32.sif and put it in the i386 directory, it should work.  It only uses the winnt32.sif file if you boot from cd, starting an install from windows will ignore it.

ok run it by me again like im REALY stupid..
(apparently I am, cuz it wont work for me..)
(the slip stream & boot part works fine..)
I use setupmgr it creates a dir (ie: C:win2kdist), unless I miss my guess this is the replacement for my I386 dir.
now rename unattend.txt to winnt32.sif (it already sits in my new I386 dir)
overwrite the content of I386 with the content of C:win2kdist and burn the cd for boot..

and then the problem comes my ata100 drive is still invissible to setup...

why oh why??
(yes i did include the files for [MassStorageDrivers] and every thing.. but it just doesn\'t find it...)

hrm.. maybe its becuase i use an old 2x CD-RW disc

but what to do with the win2kdist dir... is it the new I386 dir?
or have i misunderstood that?

anyone who have added drivers (SCSII/RAID/etc..) requried in order to install on a HD, to the win2000 cd???

I have started compiling a FAQ about making modifications to the windows 2000 (and keeping it bootable).. but the one about adding drivers for non supportet drives keeps eluding me.

I\'m booting with the Windows 2000 CD to use the recovery console, because 2000 stopped working.  I need to get some data off before I rebuild, and the RC has limited functions so it can\'t copy the files I need.  Does anyone know a way to fix this?  Thanks.
Title: Win2000 Boot CD ??
Post by: Josetann on September 22, 2001, 03:26:24 PM
First, in recovery console, run these three commands:

chkdsk /p
fixmbr
fixboot

See if that gets you back in ok.  If not, then you need to put your hard drive in another computer and copy the files to the other PC\'s drive.  If you formatted your drive with NTFS, you will need either a PC with WinNT4/Win2k on it, or standard Windows 9x with the freeware NTFS driver (freeware driver gives read-only access, but that\'s all you need).

Good luck!

Hello all,

I tried CD-R win, it works perfectly but crackers beware: CD-R win IS well protected. If you apply a crack on it, it will behave as if evething\'s fine, but it won\'t.

I burned my W2K slipstreamed CD with a regular CD-R win 4. and with the same one, cracked.

Guess what? The cracked one didn\'t work, the non-cracked worked perfectly.

So don\'t look for CD-R win 3.8, the fourth version is perfect as long as you don\'t crack it...

Mate I dont think you will get much help from ere as most of the people here i beleve understand what you are asking is illegal, you could ask you local retailer about cd repairing products that may fix a range of scratches. anyway havent you made a backup copy of all your important cds /tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Technically....its not illegal. As long as you do not give out the serial number, it is totally legal.

I have been preinstalling M$ products for years. I create the very CD\'s you are all talking about. I can gather some of my info, and post it when I get time. Here is an example of an unattend.txt that is set to load a third party SCSI, and run some reg merges, and other batch files during install. Remeber you need to include the  [OemBootFiles] section too when using 3rd party scsi. and they must be in the $oem$textmode folder.

Anyone know how to bypass the upgrade compliance check when using an 2000 Pro upgrade CD?  I have my NT4 and 98 CD\'s, can I integrate the files necessary for the check on my 2000 boot cd?

Upgrade versions usually do not boot. Only OEM full versions. Also people want to install the service packs 1 or 2 automatically with the install instead of making it a 2 or 3 step process

Well, if this is true, and the cd is unreadable, you can contact Microsoft for have it replaced, they will do for free.

I have followed all the instructions on buring the CD correctly, and keep coming up with the NTLDR not found issue.  Can someone tell me why this is?  I see other messages in here asking this but no responses...?

Thanks.

The instruction for win2k boot cd is confusing.  Read the one for XP .

it\'s much easier to follow

The easiest way to bypass this is to change the PID in setupp.ini from 51874000 to 51873000, which designates it as a full version as opposed to an upgrade version...

Couple of questions. I am making a CD with everything I need. I would like to have all apps and patches installed automatically.
With $OEM$ at the root of the CD where should cmdlines.txt reside? Which apps and patches can be run from this file (IE6, DX81, WMP7, hotfixes etc) can be run from cmdlines.txt and which apps should be installed from the[GuiRunOnce] section?

Any box using windows vers XX or XXXX can boot from a CD.  Go into setup at normal startup and select the heirarchy you want for booting.  Normally the system looks at the A drive first.  Rearrange this setup so your CD Rom is first.  Simple.

Cool discussion.

I would like to make a bootable cd of just the 4 boot floppies in Win2k. I can`t seem to get it to work.

How do I get the files on the 4 floppies to boot instead of the win2k setup program?

Thanks

Eric says:

I put a customized NTUSER.DAT file onto the cd and called a a batch file from cmdlines.txt that overwrote the default user\'s with it to setup defaults for the machine......HINT: You can use the %USERPROFILE% variable in a batch file running out of cmdlines.txt to reference the default user\'s directory. It\'s usually C:Documents and SettingsDefault User but not always if you are upgrading.
That\'s how I copy the NTUSER.DAT file into the default user profile directory. It didn\'t seem to work if I put the command into the cmdlines.txt file but it worked in a batch file called from cmdlines.txt

Does anyone know how to do this? If Eric sees this, please advise
