I've read a couple of the posts on the site and I'm experiencing some of the same stuff so I thought I'd make a thread to see if anyoen could help.
I downloaded CWShredder a while ago and my computer was fine. The past month or so I've scanned my computer with the program and it always finds the 3 problems in the title: CWS.Svchost32, CWS.Therealsearch and CWS.HiddenDll. I click on "Fix" and then it asks me to reboot to complete the procedure.. Yet as soon as I scan the computer with CWShredder, low and behold the 3 things are still there and I don't know how to get rid of them.
I also went into my registry and there's something called SearchAssistant Uninstall which I tried to get rid of but it keeps appearing also, not sure if this is a seperate thing though so just ignore that.
Any help with getting rid of CWS.Svchost32, CWS.Therealsearch and CWS.HiddenDll would be greatly appreciated.

Your log looks good, how is it on your end?
Are you still finding SearchAssistant Uninstall
If so, where?
-
Well usually the SearchAssistant Uninstall string appears in teh Registry someone (I forget where) but it's not there at the moment. I used to just go into the Registry and delete the string and the .dll file it used to 'point' to and hope that it would stay away.. Although I know that probably does more harm than good
I ran CWshredder out of curiousity to see if it still came up with the 3 CWS viruses and it didn't find anything so it looks like it's problem solved
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
Unless this kinda thing resurfaces alot... lol
Thanks for all the help! I will save what you said previously just incase they appear on the system again

Actually, if it does reappear I would like to see a new Hijackthis log before you fix anything!!!
But it may be gone now,
You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
If you install IE-Spyad don't be surprised that a scan with Hijackthis takes a lot longer, appears to hang
As mentioned IE-Spyad throws a long list of entries into the registry and Hijackthis checks that part of the registry
But it is a very good defense from these types of infections.....
You should read this
How did I get Infected? (http://\"http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957\")
Stay safe

Well usually when I'm browsing on websites I get this same annoying advert/search site popping up but it hasn't appeared since your help so hopefully fingers crossed!
I shall download those 2 programs just now.
I will let you know if the problems come back.
Thanks again for all the help

Damn... well the problem is still there.
I double-clicked on Internet Explorer and Norton (as has happened many, many times before) caught the se.dll thing trying to run: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll"
CWS.hiddenDll is still on my computer and I checked the Registry and SearchAssistant Uninstall is back on...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/SearchAssitant Uninstall
The string inside that says "regsvr32 /s /u C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IDLAD.DLL"

That's ok, we'll try other methods
Can I get you to download a couple tools, just want to check on something
Download STARTDRECK (http://\"http://members.blackbox.net/hp_links/21/nikolaus.rameis/_data/startdreck.zip\")
Unzip it to it's own folder
run StartDreck.exe:
Hit: -config
hit: -Unmark all
Check these boxes only:
*Registry->run keys
*Registry->Browser helper objects
*System/drivers> Running processes
hit >ok.
Use the "save" tab, to save, name and post the log
Also
Could you also Download and save to Desktop DLLCompare (http://\"http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe\")
Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long
Click the Compare button to start the next process.This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.
Click the Make a Log of what was found button
Post back this log too, thanks
Both small downloads and don't take too long to run
I won't see your reply until later when I get off work, I'll check back later
We should nail this thing after that, if it is just se.dll, we'll killbox it, but we'll also check for another hidden .dll just in case
-
Alrighty thanks! no problem. I shall check back here later

Hi again Steve, this is one of the bad guys we're looking for in the Startdreck log
RunServicesOnce
**e=rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\CONTRQL.INI,DllGetClassObject
Let's try the below
First can you save this zipped file, Remove.zip, and ensure that you UNZIP it to your desktop, so now you will have Remove.reg on your desktop
Don't run it yet, but we'll need it soon
[attachment=47:attachment]
Can I get you to Print the rest of this out please or write down the below instructions
I need you to Restart your computer into MS-Dos Mode
START>>Shutdown>>select Restart in MS-DOS mode
OK
At restart you should be at this prompt
C:\WINDOWS>
Type in the below excluding the (Enter), that indicates hitting Enter on your Keyboard>>>Take note of all the spaces too
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\CONTRQL.INI (Enter)
ren CONTRQL.INI CONTRQL.old (Enter)
del temp\*.* (Enter)
You should get a prompt to select (YorN)
Select Y on the keyboard and hit (Enter)
Again at C:\WINDOWS>
type in
cd C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (Enter)
Now you should be at this prompt
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM>
Type in
del IDLAD.DLL (Enter)
type in
exit (Enter)
This should restart the computer back in Normal mode
If you want a rundown of what that should all look like with all the spaces, I've included below the same commands with = signs indicating where there should be a single space, you will not input the = sign, just the space
======================================================
attrib=-r=-s=-h=C:\WINDOWS\CONTRQL.INI (Enter)
ren=CONTRQL.INI=CONTRQL.old (Enter)
del=temp\*.* (Enter)
cd=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (Enter)
del=IDLAD.DLL (Enter)
exit
======================================================
Immediately back in Normal mode, don't open a browser yet
Look for this file and delete it
C:\WINDOWS\CONTRQL.old <--file
Also ensure this one doesn't exist
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll <--file
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O18 - Filter: text/plain - {89E0BAC2-8A55-11D9-97ED-0040AA77C344} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IDLAD.DLL
After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Double click on Remove.reg you Unzipped earlier to desktop and allow it to merge to the registry
Run CWShredder one more time clicking ONLY the FIX button
RESTART your computer afterwards
Back in Windows
Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and a fresh Startdreck log
-
Okay, done all that and here are the current logs from HJT and Startdreck

Looks good Steve
Ensure you get SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad installed
This will provide extra protections
Take the computer for a spin for a couple days
Let me know how it's running

Stay safe
EDIT>>I'm glad to see you went and visited Windows Updates
Good move

Okay, well thanks for all the help!
I'll be sure to check that those 2 programs are installed and will see how I get on
