Windows Me, I get the message when the desktop is shown, I get no icons are anything just that error message...When I click ok, my computer shuts down...(Im working on parents' laptop, and mines is next to me)
-
Your going to have to tell me what steps you did already,
What files did you delete?
Can you Restart into safe mode?
Do you have a floppy disk?
-
If im not mistaken I've deleted
c:\windows\system\explorer.exe
c:\windows\system\iexplore.exe
c:\windows\system\userinit32.exe
c:\windows\rundll32.exe
c:\windows\hosts
c:\funny.exe
Some of them worked but not all of them, well I couldnt not get the to shell= part either. When I go into safe mode I still have no icons but I can see my dekstop and only can move my mouse. I do have a floppy disk or 2 but they are obselete...

I'm just stepping out for a bit
I want to ensure your following the correct instructions
When I asked the user to do this
*.*
That is to delete all temp files in the temp directory, don't worry about that step
Also when you enter this into the prompt
edit c:\windows\system.ini
Ensure there is a space between edit and c
and then hit Enter on your keyboard you should get to the system.ini blue screen
When you edit the shell entry
Make sure it reads this
shell=Explorer.exe
To save the changes use the ALT key on your keyboard
This should get you back to the top of the screen
Then dropdown the FILE at the top with the arrow key
and arrow to SAVE and then Enter on the keyboard
Does that make sense?
When your done make sure you come back here
We have some cleaning to do in your log
Also we will replace a file that you deleted, but you had to anyways
And replace your hosts file
-
Ugh! Now I remember!!! I went to edit c:\windows\system.ini once and I changed shell= or something in it and I couldnt get back in there...I dont remember what I changed it to though...when I type edit c:\windows\system.ini there is an error saying "Bad command or file name" So im guessing I might have deleted it or something...

Your not giving too many clues as what you have done already
Responses as
It isnt working....
After about 4 days without a response you leave me in the blank
It would be the same as me phoning a auto mechanic on the phone and say my car is broke
Mechanic asks>>What's the problem
I respond>>It just broke down, fix it!!!!!
Please help me

What happens if you boot with your floppy
Never having Windows ME
Boot to a Dos prompt
Type in EXACTLY
edit c:\windows\system.ini
There must be a single space after edit
-
Bad command or file name
-
Well, I'm not sure what steps you quite did beforehand
Wish i could be more help
I would opt for a clean install and start over
Or Reinstall over your copy and if that gets you back to Windows
Back up any important files or documents and then start over
This link may be helpful

Is it possible to get files from the internet to insure a new restore since mine is messed up...
-
I don't know which way to go with this one, I wish I knew the exact steps you took
Or I wish you didn't take until I seen a Hijackthis log
To Reinstall Windows you will need your CD
But, first, can you boot into safe mode and access all your files?
Can you manually navigate too this file
c:\windows\system.ini <-this file
-
I think I messed something up....o.o....whenn I start up it goes to COMPAQ screen then WINDOWS ME screen then it has a black screeen saying
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD)
