===Download and save to deskop
DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf (http://\"http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf\")
We'll need this later>>If using a Mozilla browser, right click on that link and SAVE Link As, save it to desktop

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

===Right Click on DelDomains.inf>>Choose Install from the menu bar
This will delete all your Trusted and Ranges entries

Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found

Restart your computer

Find and delete these files if found

Geustolo,

Couldn't right click on DelDomains.inf on the desktop, so I saved it to a download folder, highlighted it and installed using windows explorer.  SB Soft was not present.  Restarted computer and deleted winsx.dll.  Blank.htm was not present.

New Highjackthis log is here:

You should run a disk cleanup
START>>RUN>>TYPE in cleanmgr
Hit OK
Ensure Temp and Temp Internet files are checked

If everything is running better
You should clear your System Restore points
disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature (http://\"http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm\")

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

I have run  cleanmgr, downloaded Spyware Blaster and IE-Spyad.  I have not yet installed them or created new restore points.

I still have a Desktop which contains only icons for Internet Explorer and Recycle bin.  This is left over from a bout with Smart Security.  I had deleted the desktop.html file and the desktop reminas all blue with the two icons.  If I right click at the top of the desktop, another folder appears and vanishes quickly.  If I go to Control Panel, Display, Desktop, I cannot do anything.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi again Rushfan, if you can, could you create a new restore point right now
START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>System Restore
Create a new restore point
Name it and click Create

Once that is down

Download and save to a folder Display.zip
[attachment=95:attachment]
UNZIP the contents so you now have Display.reg in the same folder

Double click on Display.reg and allow to merge to the registry

Restart your computer

Let me know if you can access your Control panel
Display options

Also let me know if you see duplicate icons on the desktop

Created a restore point, ran display.reg and allowed it to merge, restarted the computer.  The desktop is a still blue background with only an IE and Recycle bin icon.  However, I can now right click on the desktop to get to the Display properties.  I still cannot change the Desktop background.  There are no duplicate icons, only the two IE and Recycle Bin icon.

Hi again Rushfan, I'm just on my way to work

Techie from Canada has posted some procedures at This link (http://\"http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10600&st=140\")

Take note of the edit's he made
However I would like to know if the whole procedure is needed
Read it carefully

All we have to do now is unlock the Display properties and maybe fix Double Icons

If you would like to do this first, it would be appreciated
Could I get you to do the following
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Code box to notepad
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS

Name the file as Export.bat

Save this file in a folder of your choice
Code: [Select]
regedit /e Export.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
Double click on Export.bat and a file should be placed in the same folder  called
Export.reg
Right click on Export.reg and select EDIT
Copy and paste back the findings

Rushfan, I missed one reg fix that isn't mentioned in that link I posted to you earlier

This one may give you problems too
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"=dword:00000001

We'll take of it later if we have too

Can you run Export.bat again and post the finding by Right clicking on Export.reg again

Thanks

Ran fix.reg, rebooted, and now have access to Display Properties options.  No double icons.  Still left with IE Explorer and Recycle icons only.  I guess I will have to recreate others as shortcuts, correct?

Can you try this please

Go to START>>Run>>type in regedit

Hit OK

Navigate to this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

You can do that by expanding(+) the below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Windows
+CurrentVersion
+Explorer

Left click once to highlight  User Shell Folders

On the right hand side look for Desktop
Double click on Desktop and change the value data from
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%

You can copy and paste this entry in bold below
Change to

%USERPROFILE%\Desktop

OK it and exit Registry editor and Restart your computer again

Let me know if any others in that right hand side in the User Shell folders
had the  %ALLUSERSPROFILE%
data, there shouldn't be as we got rid of Custom Desktop

On the right side of DESKTOP read C:\desktop.  I changed it to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop, exited the registry editor, and rebooted.  Most, but not all, icons are back.

All others in that right hand side in the User Shell folders
had the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\start menu, cookies, favorites, etc.

Thanks Rushfan, I assume you can change your Background wallpaper

If you navigate back to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

All, except for (Default) which will probably have value not set

Should read
%USERPROFILE%\WHATEVER

Example
On my system
The Programs Entry on the right hand side would have a value data
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs

You should change all of yours but first create a fresh restore point ahead of time and then come back here and let me know how things are running and supply one last hijackthis log

EDIT>>Once you make the appropriate changes and OK out of the Registry
Restart one more time before posting back a fresh Hijackthis log
Title: Help Needed

Questolo,

I reviewed the User Shell Folders and all seem to be okay.  The computer seems to be running well.  Thank you very much for all the help.  I'll get a donation sent your way very soon.  Now I guess I'll have to work on my wife's laptop.

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Here's the HJT file:

That all looks good
Can you run a disk cleanup please
Go to START>>RUN>>type in cleanmgr
Give it time too compress old files

Ensure  that Temp and temp internet files are checked
Click the MORE OPTIONS button
Under System Restore click the Cleanup button to clear out but the last restore point

I would also take the time too now install SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad from the insructions I supplied
