I am having the same problem, and it is getting very frustrating.  When I refresh a page, the links go away...but I have no idea how to fix them from not being there in the first place.  I am VERY computer illiterate, and have no idea what the problem is...HELP PLEASE!!!! /mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':angry:\' />

Download Hijackthis 1.99.1 from my signature below and save it too a permanent folder on the harddrive

Open Hijackthis.exe
Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

More and more I'm seeing this entry

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Can you also go to this site please
Give this site time to load
Jotti's Online Malware scan (http://\"http://virusscan.jotti.org/\")

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe <--this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

Additionally, I want you to redownload hijackthis and save it too a permanent folder on your harddrive
I don't want it ran from a Temporary folder
We're going to clean that area, hijackthis makes backups, all backups will be lost

OK i am in the process of doing this...thanks for all your help...would it be easier to walk me thru this on MSN messenger??? what ever is easier for u...lemme know.  I am scanning off the site now...it is almost half done

k i did the ewido thing, and i already had spybot, but i did install all the updates.  i started to read thru the rest of what u typed, and my jaw hit the floor...i dont understand it...can u call me to walk me thru the rest.??? i did dopy and paste it to my notepad thingie...so i have the instructions, but there are ?'s i have.  i have a wireless modem...this is a laptop...does this change things???? and i font know what firefox and opera browsers are...

and 2 files in my recycle bin that will not delete..."_ISTMP0" and "_ISTMP1"????????

Or is it a trial version that has expired?
What are you running for Anti-Virus software?

I had you remove one orphaned ActiveX related too an older version of Java
It shouldn't have any impact on playing the online game
I do see you have the newest Java installed, but it may be corrupt
We'll look into that next

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log please

NOTE: Don't worry about the extra files that you see on desktop,etc..
You can now go back and rehide hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do Not Show hidden files and folders.
* Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Don't worry about the length of time Messenger loads
All programs might take a bit longer to load on first bootup after we used ATF-Cleaner
This also cleans the Prefetch folder
Programs will open quicker on next bootup

Can you try the following

Access your Add/Remove programs via Control panel

Try and remove
Network Monitor
Let me know if it will remove

Next:
Remove Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
It's not malicious, but outdated
Reboot the computer if prompted

Back in Windows
Can you make sure that the XP firewall is enabled if you have no other Firewall protection
Enter the Windows Control Panel
and double click on the Windows Firewall icon to see if it's running

Do the following
==Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE (http://\"http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button\")
 or HERE (http://\"http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html\")

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check the boxes and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART your computer if any entries in Red were Fixed

Back in Windows

You don't have Norton's AV installed anymore or SpySweeper
Can you do the following please
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Symantec Network Drivers Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
APPLY it
Do the same for this one
Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine

Next: open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open "Delete an NT service"
In the new box, copy and paste the following below in bold then click OK
SNDSrvc
Don't restart the computer yet
Instead do the same thing for this entry
svcWRSSSDK

Again, don't reboot the computer
Instead, In Hijackthis under "Other stuff"
Click BACK
Then click SCAN
Put a tick next to this entry

ONLY install one, more than one will cause conflicts

Avast Home Edition by ALWIL (http://\"http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html\")

You decide which one you want
You may choose AVAST as you appear to use File sharing programs
After your new AV is installed, make sure it is fully updated and run a complete system scan
Let it fix whatever it finds
Reboot the computer one more time when it's done
NOTE: If you decide to go with AVG, the free download link is under
"AVG Free for Windows installation files"
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log when your done

NOTE: Could you also let me know what version of Ad-Aware your using
Open Ad-Aware, Under initialization status click on DETAILS

If you get a bad checksum error, or if the downloads do take forever
Cancel the downloads
This could take a bit of time to stop

After that search for downloads again
Tick all the boxes to download
From the drop down menu in Download location at the top
Choose to download from
Safer Networking #1 (Europe)
Then click Download Updates
I've never had a problem with that download location

Did you run a Full System scan with Avast
It should do it by default when installing?

I didn't see you edit your last post and supply you hijackthis log

If you haven't done so already
After you have done the scan with AVAST and rebooted the computer

Open the email they sent you with the registration number
Right click the AVAST icon by the clock and left click
About Avast
Click the LICENSE KEY button

Copy and paste the lisence key they emailed you to the box in Avast
You will have to reregister once a year and do the same thing
I believe you will be notified by Avast when that time is up

Don't forget to post back a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running when done

That is probably in SpywareDoctor's backup folder
You can probably just delete it if it will, if not don't worry about it

ok i think i have it all fixed...except for 2 files in my recycle bin that wont delete...but those are empty so i can deal with that...you are wonderful!!! Thank you for all your help...amazing how much faster my puter is running now!!!!

Actually, that's very good info you just supplied, many ppls having problems with Java games after installing the latest version of Java

We should clear all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle

Go to START>>RUN>>In the open field
Type in

msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer

This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point

Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Please Immunize after every update

You may also choose to hold onto Ewido and ATF-Cleaner
Ewido will become a Limited version in a couple weeks
It's still a very good scanner to update and run once a month

You can now go back and rehide hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do Not Show hidden files and folders.
* Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
