Hi all,
I have a major spyware/popup problems... I'm seriously contemplating crashing my system and reinstalling it, but that's another hassle by itself. So I wanna try to clean it up... Need help (a lot of it).
Aside from not being able to delete desktop.exe, I have popups up the wazoo, and no anti-spyware softwares are removing them (I tried ad-aware, spybot, CWShredder, HijackThis...), nothing. Please help. Here is my HJT log:

I forgot to mention, my computer is constantly rebooting on its own (it just did it again, and today more than ever). Don't know why, but it's scaring me...
Thanks

Let's try some cleanup
Download and UNZIP too desktop iSearch.zip
So you now have iSearch.reg on your desktop
[attachment=114:attachment]
Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found
iSearch toolbar
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=4#_Section4\")
Find and delete this folder if found
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs <-this folder
Stay in safe mode
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Double click on iSearch.reg and allow to merge to the registry
Restart back to Normal mode
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe (http://\"http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe\")
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe (http://\"http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe\")
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
[color=\"red\"]IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so![/color]

Thanks so much, I did as told :-), got rid of desktop.exe and isrvs folder.
Here is the report from l2mfix scan:
L2MFIX find log 1.03

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
[color=\"red\"]IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so![/color]
NOTE:After restart and L2MFIX finishes scanning for files>>give this time to finish
If a text doesn't open, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder
Could you also let me know if you can find this file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\DELPROT.SYS <--this file
-
Yes, I have that file (delprot.sys).
Here is the new log:

With all other windows closed, do another scan with Hijackthis
Put a check next to this entry and then FIX CHECKED
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Nls - C:\WINDOWS\system32\g4jole131h.dll (file missing)
Can you try this one more time
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select
Then select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.
Additonally, could you do the following
access Internet Options via Control Panel
=== Under the Security tab | Custom Level
Check ActiveX security settings:
Make sure that the following settings are correct:
o Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
o Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
o Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
o Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled)
o Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt)
Next: Access this link and do a free Online virus scan at Panda's
Click the Scan your PC button and fill out appropriate information
When it's done, you should have the option of saving the Incident report
Can you copy and paste that back here please
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm (http://\"http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm\")
You may want to temporarily disable Norton's auto protect before runnning the scan
So it won't interfere

I'm very happy myself with Spybot and Ad-Aware
However, Microsofts Anti-Spyware Beta is also performing well and helps to set back some default settings that may have been changed by the hijackers
If you could
Follow these Generic instructions
==========================================
You can download it from HERE (http://\"http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en\")
Follow the steps in the Installation Wizard until it is ready to install the program. When the wizard is ready to install, click Install to begin installing Windows AntiSpyware (Beta).
When installation is complete, select the check box next to Launch Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware, and then click Finish.
When you click Finish on the window above, the welcome page of the Setup Assistant should open. The Setup Assistant will take you through the following four steps:1. Automatic updates
2. Real-time protection
3. SpyNet anti-spyware community
4. System scan
Click Next to begin the setup process
Step 1: Automatic updates:
You can configure Windows AntiSpyware for automatic updates. Automatic updates ensure that Windows AntiSpyware is kept up to date with the latest information about new spyware threats.
To configure this option, click Yes, automatically keep Microsoft AntiSpyware updated (recommended), and then click Next
Step 2: Real-time protection:
To enable real-time protection click Yes, help keep me secure (recommended) , and then click Next.
Step 3: SpyNet anti-spyware community:
This option will automatically report potential threats to SpyNet servers. If you do not want MS AntiSpyware calling out and reporting threats on your system to a remote server, click No, and then click Next.
Step 4: Scan your computer:
The final step of the Setup Assistant allows you to specify whether you'd like to schedule an automatic scan and also shows you how to perform an initial scan of your computer.
To configure Windows AntiSpyware to run a spyware scan automatically, select the box next to Run a spyware scan every night at 2 a.m. How to set up a scheduled spyware scan (http://\"http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/howto/scanauto.mspx\")
To scan your computer for spyware, click Run Quick Scan Now.
After the scan has been completed, you'll see a window with the preliminary results of your scan. To see more detailed results click View Results.
To take the recommended action, click the Continue button at the bottom of the spyware scan results window.
Restart your computer afterwards and post back a fresh Hijackthis log
Note: Those are generic instructions for setting up Antispyware Beta
I don't have the Scheduled scan running, I update it and check manually every couple of weeks
The Autoupdater, I don't have enabled, I manually check for updates before I run the scan
Step 3, I'll leave that up to you, I clicked No
With the fresh Hijackthis log, could you also do the following
===Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad, not including the word Quote
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Name the file as DPF.bat
Save this file on the desktop
@echo off
cd\
cd\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
dir /a /Q * >C:\dpflist.txt
start=C:\dpflist.txt
cls
exit
Double click on DPF.bat and post back the dpflist.txt log that opens
Just some final cleaning, let me know how everythings running
-
You are so awesome!!! There are absolutely no more popups, everything is running so smoothly now.

I have deleted all the files specified below, and as for the Adaware and Spybot, I think they're fine too, it's just that I think my case was beyond hope at this point and that's why they didn't work. I'll stick to them, and do the MS one some other time.
You think that's OK?
Anyway, things are running great now. Anything else I need to do?
Thank you so much for your time and all your help.

You still have some registry entries that could be dealt with
One for sure I would like to get rid of if found
Are you comfortable in the Registry?
Before modifying the Registry
Make a fresh restore point
Go to START>>ALL Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a new restore point
Name it and click create
Use these links to track down what to delete if found
If your not comfortable with it, let me know
I'll write a reg fix later
I may not post it back tonight however
But we have to ensure once everything is allright we clear your restore points and get a couple tools on your computer to help prevent this in the future
First one, if you find these entries for SaveNow
More Info (http://\"http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.savenow.html\")

Hi, I tried looking for some of those keys, but to tell you the truth, I'm not that comfortable with deleting those keys.
Other than that, it's running great now, no popups whatsoever. The only other question I have is, I still have 4-5 of those svchost processes running. Should I be concerned?
Anyway, here is the new HJT log:

Let's try the following
Download and UNZIP to desktop Cleanit.zip
So you now have Cleanit.reg on the desktop
[attachment=117:attachment]
Close down all Windows
Double click on Cleanit.reg and allow to merge to the registry
Restart your computer
If everything is running better
You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature (http://\"http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm\")
Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled
You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
Stay safe
