If you didn't intentionally install Viewpoint, I would access your Add/Remove programs and remove all instances of it
Restart your computer afterwards and then post back a fresh Hijackthis log
Can you now access Windows updates?
If not, what is the exact error message you get when you visit
-
viewpoint removed, Windows updates still failing to load. error message as follows:
No Updates Were Installed
The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again.

Can you go back to Windows update and review your Installation History
Let me know if that update shows it's already installed
Your hijackthis log looks clean however
You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
-
Reviewing installation history shows many failed tries of many updates.
I've installed the protection measures you recommended.
-
Do you have an exact error message when trying Windows update
Take a look here
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ (http://\"http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/\")
-
Well I thought I had it fixed. I ran the following under Start Run per 3rd item under "Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver)" item:
regsvr32 msscript.ocx
regsvr32 dispex.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
But, as before the update process goes all the way though the download process and stops after a few minutes of installing and jumps to a screen that tells you the update failed to install.
But after running the above the install process got all the way through , meaning the install bar made it all the way across the update window, but still failed to install and I got the following:
No Updates Were Installed
The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again.
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB890923)
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB893066)
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB893086)
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB890859)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB888113)
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Reviewing my download history gives no error codes. However a week ago or so I was able to update the video driver.
This problem has been ocurring since December with many many failed attempts.
thanks,
-
Most appear to be fairly new updates put out by Microsoft
Give it a few days and try again, or try at slower time
Probably fairly early in the morning or very late at night
See if you have the same results, it could be that there really busy at this time
Also, although I don't usually recommend this
Try temporarily disabling AVG and Zone Alarm right before visiting
-
I am getting the following error when trying to update windows from the online microsoft download center (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0C534EE0-DE5B-4002-BB69-C63ED03D5D9D&displaylang=en):
"Setup could not verify the integrity of the Update.inf. Make sure Cyptgraphic service is running on this computer."
Also, I am being warned via email from my router, access to porno sites are attempted from this machine. These are during times when the machine is on with no use.
thanks
-
jwm456 posted above, but I neglected to login first.
any ideas??
thanks

Could you Download GetServices.zip (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/getservices.zip\")
Unzip it to a folder
Double click on the Getservice.bat file to run it. This will create and open a text file named getservice.txt in the same folder.
getservice.txt will list all active Services
Post the getservices.txt
Could you post a fresh Hijackthis log too, thanks
