My computer was recently overtaken by a number of spyware/viruses/adware/etc. Including that awful SmartSecurity thing. I went to that website and followed the instructions to get rid of it which I thought it did. I also bought Norton Internet Security, Spydoctor, and downloaded a bunch of free programs like Adaware, Popupstopper, Spybot.
These all got rid of many things-however my desktop wallpaper is still frozen. When you go to Control Panel the menu is faded out and unable to be changed. Also, every icon was removed by whatever this is and the icons that have recently been added by these new programs I bought are duplicated--meaning there are two of each. When you try to delete one of them, both are deleted. And last but not least my mouse's right click is disabled somehow as well.
I have been battling this for weeks now and none of these programs I have bought or downloaded have been able to fix this set of problems--PLEASE HELP!! .
I downloaded the Hijackthis program and here is my log that is created:

Create a fresh restore point so we have something to fall back on, just in case we must restore your computer
Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New Restore point
Name it and click Create
Afterwards
Any files you have personally saved on the desktop, please copy and paste them to a folder such as MyDocuments
Let's do the following
==Download and UNZIP to a folder Fixdesktop.zip
So you now have Fixdesktop.reg unzipped to a folder
[attachment=126:attachment]
==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, prefetch folder, recylebin
Windows Cleanup (http://\"http://www.antispyware.nextdesigns.net/installs/cleanup.php?type=exe\")
Install for now, don't run a scan yet
Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=4#_Section4\")
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, after the single post beep, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation
Find and delete these files or folders if found
C:\WINNT\about.htm <-file
C:\WINNT\system32\jgd.dll <-file
C:\WINNT\av.exe <-file
C:\WINNT\system32\ntddetect.exe <-file

Sorry to be so clueless... But when I go under System Tools, my only options are: Backup, Character Map, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Getting Started, Scheduled Tasks, and System Info. I went under backup and system info. and to Help to try and find something about creating a Restore Point but no luck. I just want to be sure I am doing the right thing. Thanks so much!!
-
It doesn't sound like you are logged on as a user with Administrative privileges
Are you?
Try this>>Go to START>>RUN>>type in
msconfig
Hit OK
Do you see a Launch System Restore button?
Also access your Control Panel and open the System Icon
Do you see a System Restore tab?
-
Well-let's hope the rest of this process goes better than this first thing...
I tried to run the msconfig--it says no such thing exists. Did a search for it, came up empty.
Then I went to the Control panel and system properties where my tabs are: general, network Identification, hardware, user profiles, advanced. I went under each of these but couldn't find anything about a system restore.
Oh-and I am logged on under my name, which is the administrator.
Thanks again.
-
Can you do the following
Go to START>>RUN>>Type in
regedit
Hit ok
Highlight "MyComputer" in the Reg Editor
Click FILE at the top >>EXPORT
Export to a folder such as MyDocuments
Name it Backup
As mentioned this is just for backup purposes only, may not be needed
If everything goes well, just delete backup.reg in the MyDocuments folder
EDIT>>I am very sorry for the other replies to use System Restore, I just noticed now that you are using Windows 2000
You don't have system restore or msconfig
Let me get another cup of coffee and I'll be wide awake

Can I just say that I have never been so excited to see my right-click working and my desktop back to it's original state in all my life. You are awesome.
Okay-here's what I did..
Did the export/backup thing.
Then I followed your list of previous instructions
Deleted the files you listed that I found, checked the entries listed in the Hijack this log and fixed them
THEN-I double-clicked on the fixdesktop.reg and told it to allow it to merge with the registry. Got this window titled: Registry Editor with the message "Cannot import C:\DOCUME~1\MICHEL~1\MYDOCU~1\FIXDES~1\FIXDES~1.REG Error accessing the registry"
However, I continued with your instructions after this and did the windows Cleanup, and changed my desktop wallpaper. One note (not sure if it matters) you told me to click the "Customize Desktop" button. I could not find any such button under my Display Properties. Anyway, I finished the rest of your instructions and have included here my Hijack this log and the notepad file from the export.bat
I know we aren't finished just yet-but THANK YOU does not even come close to how grateful I am for your help.

Even though you got the Cannot Import message
It appears to have went through however
That's good....
So about the Customize desktop, Windows XP on the brain today
/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
Can you set Windows to Show hidden files and folders
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Navigate to this file in the System32 folder
It's most likely a bad guy
C:\WINNT\system32\w?auboot.exe <-this file
The ? mark will probably not show, but if you right click on it and left click properties
It shoud have a date of 03/17/2005
and a size of about 417kb
Just want to make sure you can find it
It may disguise as a legit file name called wuauboot.exe
When you find the bad guy, can you do the following please
Go to this site please
Give this site time to load
Jotti's Online Malware scan (http://\"http://virusscan.jotti.org/\")
Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINNT\system32\w?auboot.exe <-this file
Remember the ? mark will probably be a different letter
Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please, just the scanner results
-
Well, I found the file, went to the website, but it says that some firewall is prohibiting it from uploading the file. So I went and temporarily disabled my norton internet security and spydoctor and yet it still says the same thing....
-
I looked up this file on Google and got tons of sites listing it as Adware. However, I guess it is a killer to get rid of. Hopefully you will know how.
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
-
Hmmm, can you try to scan it at both of these sites please
RAV ANTIVIRUS ONLINE FILE SCAN (http://\"http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/indexn.php\")
Kapersky's Online File scanner (http://\"http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus\")
Remember, you have to navigate to the file on your hard drive after clicking the Browse button
-
I tried both, neither can upload the file. I figured it was because of my Firewall from Norton Internet Security but I turned off everthing and disabled that but none of the sites will upload it.
-
Can you try something for me please
Download and save to desktop
Purity Scan Uninstaller (http://\"http://www.purityscan.com/ps_uninstaller.exe\")
Run the uninstaller and then Restart your computer afterwards
Back in Windows, find and delete that file if it still exists
w?auboot.exe
Make sure your deleting the correct one,
File size and date
Afterwards post a fresh hijackthis log
Let me know how everythings running
-
Okay, I installed and ran the purityscan uninstaller. I assume it got rid of that file because I can no longer find it.
Other than that, things here are finally looking back to normal. Please let me know what else I need to do. Thanks again.
Oh-and when I am all finished here, I assume it is okay to get rid of that backup we created at the beginning, and the export.bat file and this uninstaller?? Just wanna make sure.

Go ahead and delete Backup.reg and the uninstallers and export.bat
Go back and hide hidden files and folders
Hold onto Windows CleanUp! and clean those temp folders every couple of weeks
Best done after a fresh restart
You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")
With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
Open Spybot>>Click on Immunization>>OK>>Immunize at the top
Do this after every update
EDIT>>By the way, there is a recent update with Spybot that may detect part of Smart Security
You should check for updates>>Check and download all updates
and then Check for problems
Fix everything in RED
Restart the computer if anything is fixed

Okay-I did all of that, so I guess I am finished!! What a relief! You have saved me from 3 weeks of anguish and frustration.
I would love to donate to this site if possible. I tried to find a way on the site but I guess I am looking in the wrong place. When you have a chance, please let me know how I can do this, if possible.
Again, thank you so very much for all your help. A huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. You are wonderful!!

Glad to help out
Thanks for the great offer moesh140
If you feel like you would like to contribute to help keep the site running
or may still be used to help the kids at CSI Roatan orphanage
Use the link in my signature, it will link you to the front page
The donate link on the right hand side of the page seems to work the best
Thank you again
