It looks like you removed Symantec's product but may not have been totally uninstalled
What version were you running?

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Symantec Proxy Service (ccPxySvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ccPxySvc.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Norton Internet Security Accounts Manager (NISUM) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\NISUM.EXE (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer

Back In Windows
Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log
If prompted by SpySweeper or pestpatrol about a change, allow it so it won't get in the way of any fixes

Hi again, the Symantec version was 2004 but it never worked, I probably installed it wrong. Anyway, here is a new log following the recommended fixes.

Cheers

Can you try the following please, this may be your email problems

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Symantec Proxy Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Do the same for this service name
Norton Internet Security Accounts Manager

It looks like you said, Norton's either didn't get installed or uninstalled properly
Not sure if you had just Norton AV installed or Internet Security
If you give me that info on what exact version of Norton's you had I may be able to track down a link

But I would take a look at Norton support to  properly remove it from your system
