Title: hijack this file/thnall1ac.exe
Post by: guestolo on June 08, 2005, 12:28:31 PM
Can I have you do the following please

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow...050515010747824 (http://\"http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?download=20050515010747824\")
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet
Ensure you have it on your C:Drive

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup (http://\"http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe\")
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Alternate Download link (http://\"http://www.spywareaid.com/index.php?file=showsoftware&action=dl&softid=1&softtype=exe\")
We'll need this later

==Download and then Install
Ewido Trojan Scanner (http://\"http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe\")

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE (http://\"http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=4#_Section4\")

Once in safe mode

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- System Startup Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
Exit out of there

==Double-click on nailfix.cmd that you unzipped earlier. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
DECLINE to Log off when scan is done.

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take a while, so give it time to run
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Save the report

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
Not all may be found, but fix what exists

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ltyfhc] c:\windows\system32\gwgarfr.exe

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

I hope you did a full scan

Can you do one last thing for me please
==Download Find-It's.zip from below
UNZIP the contents

Open the FindIt's folder and double click on the FindIt's.bat

Looks good
You may choose to uninstall Ewido, or hold onto it
After a couple weeks it will become a limited version, but still very good

Did you purposely install this screensaver?
I'm just checking
It appears legit from what I've read about it
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Online News Screensaver] C:\Program Files\Online News Screensaver\onsagent.exe

If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature (http://\"http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm\")

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial (http://\"http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53\")
Download link (http://\"https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD\")

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2 as well

Your version of Java is out of date
I never find the updater that reliable
Personally, I would access your Control Panel and open the Java Icon, under the Cache tab, Clear all cache
Next: I would access the Add/Remove programs and remove the version of Java you have installed now and then download and install the latest version from this link
I like to go with the Windows offline installation
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp (http://\"http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp\")

Try this link, it's a fair size download so give it time
On cable it only takes about a minute

nope
it says windows cannot open this file

to open this file windows needs to know what program created it.

either use the web service to find the program
or
select the program from a list

?

EDIT>>You can disregard my reply below, I was posting at the same time  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

If you right click on the Icon of the installer and left click properties
What is the size of the file?

Are you having problems opening other .exe files?

Can you do the following please

Go to START>>RUN>>COPY AND PASTE the wholebold  line into the open field and then Click OK

regedit /e C:\find.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command"

Now, navigate to this file below, open it and copy and paste the contents back here
C:\find.txt
Title: hijack this file/thnall1ac.exe
Post by: michaelb on June 08, 2005, 10:03:47 PM
guestolo
the file size says 117 mb
that seems really big doesn't it ?

i wasn't sure how to clear the cache earlier so i never did

also that whole bold line does nothing when pasted into
run

Quote
also that whole bold line does nothing when pasted into
run

You actually have to navigate to the  file (C:\find.txt)  and open it after you paste that into the run field and hit OK

Did you see my Edit in my last reply?
Title: hijack this file/thnall1ac.exe
Post by: michaelb on June 08, 2005, 10:18:35 PM
no problems opening the exe files

but in the run command
i typed

regedit /eC:\find.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command"

and nothing happened
Title: hijack this file/thnall1ac.exe
Post by: guestolo on June 08, 2005, 10:36:56 PM
I wouldn't worry about it
Just for your info, you typed it in wrong
That's why I wanted you too copy and paste that bold entry to the Run command  /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

By the way, nothing is going to pop up after you enter it
You have to find this file
C:\find.txt

You go to it, it doesn't come to you

you can tell when it gets technical i'm lost.

how do i find c:\find.txt
Title: hijack this file/thnall1ac.exe

Like I said, nothing to worry about
But if you would like to post the contents
Open MyComputer and then double click to open the C:drive
You should then see find.txt

hello,
this is all that was in find.txt

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

is it normal ?

As I said before michaelb, you had nothing to worry about  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Here's what that export looks like from my machine

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

I would say it looks normal

Stay safe  /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
