Title: newbie needs help - smitfraud
Post by: glitterrock on June 18, 2005, 11:47:15 PM
Newbie in distress here /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> I just found this site, and thought I'd sent out a call for help.

Around 9:30 while surfing the net I got the inkling I might've gotten some spyware accidentally. In any case, long story short, I *do* and from what I've been able to gleam on the net it looks like the smitfraud one. First up, I have the infamous "wallpapered" Security warning detailing "A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:c0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36.
Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c
* System cannot function in normal mode. Please check you security settings.
* Scan your PC with any avalible antivirus/spyware remover to fix the problem." (spelling errors exact)

After checking through the net, also, I did what was suggested (perhaps in this very forum)

I ran Adaware first and found the following (and removed them all)
MRU List (18 objects total) do not pose a threat
TIB browser (1 object 0 TAC Rating of 6) regkey dialer HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT:clsid\(0656a137-b161-cadd-9777-e37a75727e78)\
Tracking Cookies (92 total) TAC Rating of 3
I found nothing with the VX2 cleaner add-on.

Then I rebooted, and ran SPYBOT and found this:
ELEMENT-reboot executable
c:\WINDOWS\...boot.exe
(I'd also discovered this when I ran my McAfee spyware -- but with both McAfee and Spybot, the programs froze up midway through removal and couldn't get rid of it)

I finally rebooted a third time and ran CWShredder. There were two things questioned:
C:\WINDOWS\INTERSPN.exe
and C:\WINDOWS\INTELHPN.exe
it said both *could* be part of CWS.control.4, but wasn't certain. It said if I wasn't certain to leave them and post the names on the forum to check whether they should be removed or not.

And finally after all that, I ran my HijackThis. Here's the log entry:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

I don't know whether this helps at all, but I noticed that PSGuard has also been installed, probably as a result, and that the program svcnut32 is running when I do a "close program" function.

I really hope that someone can help with this (I know that everyone says that, but like everyone I truly hope it as well -- it's been causing me grief all day). I look forward to hearing back. Many thanks in advance.
