this is sorta off topic, but where can you download a good version of windows 2000? I have tried searching in Ares, torrentspy, kazaa, et cetera.

dude, first of all, if you try to upgrade from 98 to any version of xp, your computer will almost certainly feel like its steem driven! (yes, whistle, coal and everything) your best bet is to stick with 98, its a far better os (operatig system), well, if u can have a decent microsoft product, and your computer wont be so slow. if your life has no meaning with out windows Xp in it, then get a new computer to put it on, but almost all machines from the 98 era arent powerful enough to run it.
if you do what to get a new computer with Xp on it, dont chuck the old one, get a router, and network them! this way, they both have acces to the others hard drive, so, for instance, you can do some work on the 98 then save it to the Xp and vice versa, and you can share other resources like printers and internet connections. network setup should be like this:

internet
your DSL router (pluged into phone line)
Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable
network card of each computer.

look at the jpg for a better explanation of this

also, to save some space, you might want to buy a KVM switch. this stands for Keyboard Video & Mouse and lets you use only one keyboard, screen and mouse with the two computers

do gime a bell if u need any more help

well actually, my computer is a celeron 1.7 ghz with 768 mb RAM. This computer is not from the 98 era, and is a barebone. I used 98 to install on the computer because that was the only available OS to install for me.

If your friend has a retail copy then yes you can use his disc.  But you may end up with activation issues.

And on a machine with at least 500mhz speed and 256mb ram,  XP is a better choice than 98.  You machine is good specs, it will run nicely.

If you want to install your friend's XP Home, you can do that alright. When you buy Windows XP, it allows you to activate the same product multiple times. MS limits the amount of activations though, and calls it "leasing" Windows XP. If you run into the limit, your friend can no longer activate it. So, if your friend will not be reinstalling windows XP very often at all, you can install his. Otherwise, you can download Windows XP corperate adition which doesn't need activating. It will not be legit, but hey, it's better than spending your valuable money that you worked hard for on "Leasing" software from a multi-billon dollar corperation.
