Title: XP hangs during shutdown

Can't reproduce the problem when in Safe Mode.  Any ideas on how to pinpoint the exact problem.  I'm guessing Spyware but Microsoft Anti-Spyeare Beta 1 and McAffee scans coming up dry while in Safe Mode (will try again in User account).  Any suggestions welcome (other than reformat and start over).

You should obtain the latest Windows XP service pack. As for spyware, try to perform a check-up with this free online spyware checker (http://\"http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/privacyexpert/spyware-removal.html\").

I think that I have ridded all Spyware with Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta1 and Spybot S&D.  Still having the problem in shutdown hanging.  I have XP SP2 on there for some time (5 months). I cannot access the Windows update site via IE.  I think there lies the problem somehow.  Anyone know the innerds of how WU works?  Why can't I access the website, it just sits there and does nothing (but display the green status bar at the bottom of IE).

Thanks for any insight you may be able to lend.

Based on what you wrote since you can't reproduce the problem in safe mode there must be something loading that is causing the problem.
Try the following:

Click Start
Click Run
Type msconfig
Click on Startup tab
Click on disable all

Restart the computer.

When it reboots try logging off if the problem is fixed then great.
Then go back into msconfig ----> Startup and then only click back things like the antivirus.

Hope this helps just in case it is spyware. Also keep in mind that service pack 2 will incredibly reduce the odds of being infected by spyware so long as you don't install something containing the spyware.
