has anybody been able to do a auto-insert of the serial for win xp?
-
You should use \"unattend\" script: I worked a bit on it but it\'s harder than I though....

How can i make my win xp auto insert the serial?
-
how do u do that ?
can u explain a little more please ?
-
winnt.sif in the i386 folder
you can make your own winnt.sif
from the 2k/xp cd, go to support folder.
extract the files from the deploy.cab
then run setupmanager.
create an unattend installation file.
it will create an unattend.txt with all the answers that you have provided.
rename the unattend.txt to winnt.sif and put it back to the i386 folder, and you will have an autoinstall CD
-
extract the deploy.cab using what ?
and extract it to what folder ?
-
It\'s obvious that you shouldn\'t be playing on your mom\'s computer.
-
thank you very nice
-
Well, That Was A Great Explanation Man, Thx Alot, I Really Appreciate You Guyz Spending The Time And Explaining Stuff Like This, I Just Wonder How You Guyz Figure This Stuff Out??? But.. Anyways, It\'s All Good... Thx.. And Peace Out..
-
hey,
i did it.
but why u have to rename it to winnt.sif and not leave it as unattend.tx ?
-
unattend.txt is the file that NT based os\'s looks for on floppy disks whan an install is starting, winnt.sif is what it looks for in i386
-
how do you guys know all this stuff ?
where do u learn this ? inside windowx bible ? hahaha
-
oh yeah
if windows look for stuff in the winnt.sif folder then how do u say like make it to install a driver or a program etc.. when installing windows XP so i dont have to install it later on.
-
winnt.sif is not a floder it a FILE
-
yes a file and windows looks for certain things in there.
so how u make it to install a driver or a program ?
-
I was able to do all the steps mentioned here to make it auto insert. But when I tested out it did not work. Windows xp was still asking for the serial. Can some one help? by the way I extracted the xp into the hard drive and test it there.
-
created a file called UNATTENDED.TXT
inset the command
[UserData]
ProductKey=your serial number
Put in the I386 directory
Gary
-
Example of UNATTENDED.TXT
[UserData]
FullName = \"Your User Name\"
OrgName = \"Your Organization Name\"
ComputerName = *
ProductKey= \"JJWKH-7M9R8-26VM4-FX8CC-GDPD8\"
-
Thanks those who replied. auto insert still does not work for me. I even edited the unattend.bat file to make it point to the unattend.txt but windows setup.exe did not seem to look for either WINNT.SIF or unattend.txt.
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
This is what I did. Some one please point out what I did wrong. I extract the setupmgr to desktop. Double clicked it to run and answer all questions that I want to make as default during the install. Renamed the generated unattend.text and unattend.bat to WINNT.SIF and WINNT.BAT, respectively and put them in I386 folder. That did not work. Some other time, I just put WINNT.SIF in to the I386 folder without doing anything to the unattend.bat file. And I did try just putting the unattend.txt in I386 also and that did not work either.
-
I posted the UNATTENDED.TXT file
That is all I did, no unattend.bat or anything else
the only line in my UNATTENDED.TXT is
[UserData]
ProductKey= \"JJWKH-7M9R8-26VM4-FX8CC-GDPD8\"
Make sure your make follow the example to the letter
capital U and D in userdata
capital P and K in Prodcutkey
\" signs in the serail number\"
Gary

how do you guys test the .sif out that it\'s actually working? do I have to boot from cd and go step by step all the way to the serial entry box? or just double click on setup.exe in another windows OS and get to the serial entry box to see if the serial is auto inserted? thanks for replying.
-
Try VirtualPC.
Flames showed it to me earlier and I have loved it ever since.
Note: If you run setup.exe in another OS you are actually upgrading the OS. You have to use WINNT32.SIF instead as you are actually running winnt32.exe to upgrade.
Question? Has anyone tried editing the SETUPP.INI file to insert the serial number. I have had two people now mention that it did not work for them and my xp disk at home just died. No comments about making backups please.
/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />
-
The only way I knew it worked was to try it.
I tried the upgraded to Win98
and Scratch install of the boot CD.
it does not even ask for the serial number
Gary
-
I appreciate it, Twinkie for your helpful comment. And big thanks to Gary for answering my questions all time. I guess I now have to start it over again since the bootable CD I made did not work. My computer can recognize the CD and got past the first few steps in the early stage of setup and then it said it could not locate files in CD. Dont really know what that means. anyone with similar problem or can help? thanks
-
Twinkie
Tried what you said. it didn\'t work. I created a WINNT32.SIF in 386 folder and started the set up upgrade. The serial wasn\'t there.
-
First: Not recognizing the CD? When? During the install, after the install, were you adding any programs at the end? Need more info.
Second: Could you send me a copy of your winnt32.sif file?
Thanks,
-
no, it didnt work for me either.
i did exactly what they said
this is so weird
-
Reply to Twinkie!
First: my computer can recognize the bootable CD and allows me to hit the space bar to start the setup. Then I can see windows loads all the neccessary drivers for the setup process. But one or two steps after this, windows seems to complain that it can\'t locate files on the CD. if I would just copy every thing on this CD back to the hard drive, I think the install would be just fine.
Second: Here\'s my WINNT32.SIF

is this one worked ?
-
it definitely worked. I\'ve tried on both WinXP and Win2k. I chose full unattended option. The XP version of setupmanager.exe from XP DEPLOY.CAB works best and works for both WinXP and Win2k.
-
OK guys, I think there is a little confution about this one, this is whay I have in the CD I created:
First: create a text file with the info shown below, just copy and paste as it is.(trust me, it works!)
Second: Rename it to : \"WINNT.SIF\"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
note: (of course, DO NOT use the \'--------------------\', OK?)
Third:
The key shown here is the Corporate, if you use a different key make sure you change it. You need to add this file to your i386 folder, and burn a new CD. If it\'s an \'.iso\' image use WinISO to add the file; if you copied all the CD to your Hard Drive, then you need to make your CD boootable.
I\'ve done it this way with no problems at all, good luck!

dont know why but these things never work for me in windows XP.
-
You can copy your winnt.sif file to a 3,5\" floppy disk before an installation of W2K and put the disk into your PC.
Than you boot from the original installation W2K CD. During the installation the setup software looks out to the floppy disk and if it found a file named winnt.sif, than it use it.
You can set a lot of things in winnt.sif file to automate installation of W2K. And you can use the original CD!
You can read more about this at www.microsoft.com/technet . Search for the winnt.sif!
IR
-
i followed your directions as you stated but when I run setup the serial was not there
is there anything missed, what about an msbatch.inf file?
-
hey dotn bother . it cant work like that
-
Automatically inserting the serial number for each install.
In the \'i386\' folder of each version open the file SETUPP.INI (use notepad for this one)
Find the line:
[Pid]
ExtraData=646E77637A6F6D79626A1D94089595
Pid=51873000
and change it to
[Pid]
ExtraData=646E77637A6F6D79626A1D94089595
Pid=51873270
You are basically changing 000 to 270 at the end of Pid=
Make sure you did this for all three folders.
-
Note, changing the setupp.ini only works in win2k, not winxp.
-
\"For more information about answer files and performing an unattended
installation, see the Windows XP deployment documentation Ref.chm Help file that
is located in SupportToolsDeploy.cab on the Windows XP CD-ROM.\"

Make it so
ProductID=Serial Number
so it goes i have test it
-
Here is exactly how you do it. This is my script and it works!
Such a beautiful thing! Everything worked peachy. I have no complaint with my script at all. Create a file called WINNT.SIF. Place it into the I386 directory.

I have most of this working now (thank God for CDRWs). I do have one question though. How can I make the unattended setup reformat my first partition for a clean install?
I saw the command - Repartition = Yes , but that wipes out ALL partitions on the first disk. I want to reformat C: but keep D:. Is this possible?
If not, how can I reformat, or wipe clean, my C: drive for a reinstall? I used to do it from the XP setup, but now I am trying to use the unattended setup, so that\'s not an option. I can\'t reformat from within XP before the reinstall.
-
In also would like to format c: without touching any other partition during unattend is it possible
-
Try this:
[Unattended]
Filesystem=ConvertNTFS ;Specifies whether to convert the primary partition to NTFS or to leave it alone
Granted that you want to use NTFS; this should always format inorder to convert regardless if it is previously FAT or NTFS. Well give it a try. Let me know if it works.

I\'m trying to get the windows xp cd key to automatically insert every time I install......I\'ve tried practically every method you guys have listed and none of them work......Can someone please tell me a method that actually works? Thanks

Boy, you shouldn't be using your moms computer LMAO. They have already posted ways that DO WORK, your problyl just doing it wrong!

I've heard that on some installs, you have to change the data to this:
[UserData]
ProductKey=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
That would be changing ProductID to ProductKey
Hope that helps,
- Jazkal
-
Just put both variables as that LOL. Doing this only takes common sense.
-
Let me just make sure I understand what I need to do:
1. Copy contents of windows xp cd onto my hard drive
2. Open notepad and paste the following into it (replacing the x's for the product key):
[UserData]
ProductKey=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
3. Save it as \"unattend.txt\"
4. Replace the unattend.txt in the i386 directory with the one that was just created
Is that correct??
-
anyone??

You're hopless, don't try unless you know how to burn a cd...
They shown the ways, it's basicaly copy, paste, edit key, save, burn.

Thanks for the reply Jazkal2.....I tried what you said, but it didn't work.......I'm running Windows XP Professional w/ SP1 and here is *exactly* what I did:
1. Created a folder on my desktop named \"Windows XP\"
2. Copied the contents of my windows xp cd into that folder
3. Opened notepad
4. Pasted the following into notepad:
[UserData]
ProductKey=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
5. Replaced the x's with my windows xp cd key
6. Saved the file as a text document to my desktop and named it \"unattend\"
7. Double-clicked the \"My Computer\" icon on my desktop, clicked on tools>>folder options>>view and then unchecked the box that said \"hide extensions for known filetypes\"
8. Then I clicked \"apply\" and then I clicked \"OK\"
9. I renamed \"unattend.txt\" to \"winnt.sif\"
10. I right-clicked winnt.sif and select \"cut\"
11. I double-clicked on the Windows XP folder on my desktop and then double-clicked the i386 folder
12. I pasted winnt.sif into that directory
13. I went back to the root of the windows xp folder on my desktop and double-clicked setup.exe
14. I clicked \"Install Windows XP\"
15. I selected \"Upgrade (Recommended)\" as the installation type and then clicked Next
16. I selected \"I accept this agreement\" and clicked Next
17. The next screen of the Windows XP installation was the product key screen, and the boxes where you are supposed to enter the product key were left empty
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
What did I do wrong?

Nice double post there, boy!

cable23,
Go to your XP CD, and look in the support\tools folder for a file called deploy.cab
Use Winzip to extract it somewhere on your computer.
Go to the extracted files and run the \"setupmgr.exe\" file.
Go through the wizard and fill in the blanks. That will create an unattended file for you.
Then rename the generated unattend.txt file to winnt.sif
- Jazkal
-
Didn't work
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> Here's exactly what I did ==>
1. Extracted the contents of deploy.cab from my Windows XP CD to a folder on my hard drive using WinZip
2. Double-clicked the file \"setupmgr.exe\" from that folder on my hard drive
3. Selected \"Create a new answer file\" and clicked Next
4. Selected \"Windows Unattended Installation\" and clicked Next
5. Selected \"Windows XP Professional\" and clicked Next
6. Selected \"Provide Defaults\" and clicked Next
7. Selected \"No, this answer file will be used to install from a CD\" and clicked Next
8. Kept on clicking Next until it took me to the \"Providing the Product Key\" screen, and I entered my product key and clicked Next
9. Kept on clicking Next until it took me to the last screen, and I clicked Finish and saved the unattend.txt file to my desktop
10. Double-clicked the \"My Computer\" icon on my desktop, clicked on tools>>folder options>>view and made sure the box that said \"hide extensions for known filetypes\" was unchecked
11. Renamed \"unattend.txt\" to \"winnt.sif\"
12. Right-clicked winnt.sif and select \"cut\"
13. Double-clicked on the Windows XP folder on my desktop (where the contents of my Windows XP CD are located) and double-clicked the i386 folder
14. Pasted winnt.sif and selected \"Yes\" when prompted if I wanted to replace the existing file
15. Opened up Nero and burned a new Data CD which contains the files of the Windows XP folder (on my desktop)
16. After the CD was finished burning, I double-clicked setup.exe (on the CD I just made), then clicked \"Install Windows XP\", selected \"Upgrade (Recommended)\" as the installation type and clicked Next, selected \"I accept this agreement\" and clicked Next, and the next screen of the Windows XP installation was the product key screen, and the product key field was left blank!!
Any suggestions are appreciated

11. don't Renamed \"unattend.txt\" just copy the file the name it or save it in your floppy as WINNT.SIF
12. Dont remove your floppy with the file WINNT.SIF and Dont remove the Windows XP setup CD.
13. Run the *.bat the one you save with \"unattended.txt\"
