Title: installing cable modem
Post by: mines on November 25, 2001, 01:13:35 PM
Hi,
I just have a question about installing cable modem. well, there are 3 of us and we all want to share the connection. so, the company will lend us the cable modem, but what else do we need to complete the setup? can we just use a hub?but i heard some people use routers? and i guess we just install NIC on our computers, connect those to a hub, and the hub will go to the cable modem right? but do i actually need to setup anything else?(i.e in windows)
any further info on this would be appreciated.
thanks

if you\'re using just a hub, you wil need to install a internetconnection sharing program on the pc that wil be serving the others.
for the hardware, you just plug your modem with a straight cable into the uplink of your hub and youre done.

if you\'re using a router, i don\'t know. but you may need an other type of engagement with your internet provider.

you need an ethernet card on the 3 computers and a router. check out the linksys dsl/cable router. it\'s made for these sorts of situations.

good luck.

One router only.  One ethernet card for each computer.
