Does anyone know howto control what software is running on a windows 98 box from a 2000/xp box via some type of remote administration?

If you are talking about remote control software you could try VNC.  I have used it in the past.  Great remote control software at a great price, FREE!  Just make sure you lock it down with security settings or use a SSL server to bounce the connection off of.
