my harddrive is about 5 months old(ibm 40gb).. today, it starts to spinning with this loud sharpnoise.. is my harddrive about to die??
-
Quick answer...good chance yes. IBM drives are having a high rate of failure, class action suit against them, etc. My recommendation is to back up all the critical data, call IBM up and see what they say (if it sounds bad to them, they should send a replacement).

josetan is right. I\'ve had 2 IBM drives and both have only lasted a short while before leaving this earth. When my first one started squeeling, I discovered that if I turned it upside down, the noise would go away. Although this stopped the agrivation, it only lasted 2 more months then frozeup. Get your data off it as fast as you can and buy a Maxtor drive. I\'ve had the best of luck with them.

Does this apply to IBM scsi uw and u160 too .
