There isn\'t anything that you need to \"enable\". What is the exact problem you are having? Try to be a little more specific.

Note: there is already a thread that you can post in for the Windows XP Boot Screen How-to.

If you mean a way to change the logon screen for winxp there is a program to do it :
http://www.fileforum.com/detail.php3?fid=1008745291 (http://\"http://www.fileforum.com/detail.php3?fid=1008745291\")

you probably have a problem with the power management system under controlpanel--> display-->screensaver(i believe...can\'t remember \'cause i\'m in another computer with 98..)--> then you can try advance maybe.
well, it should be under the setting where you setup the monitor power,etc.
it\'s a similar problem with when you can shutdown properly..
good luck

To boot into the command prompt you must press F8 before your boot screen comes on.  Look at your keyboard and when it comes on just press F8 or just keep pressing F8 until you get to a prompt that asks you which version of XP to load and at the bottom it says to press F8 for troubleshooting purposes.  So press F8 here then you have another menu with about 6 choices, choose safe mode with command prompt and let it load.  You will actually log into windows itself but upon doing so you will have the command prompt and then you need to copy your ntoskrnl.exe to your C:WindowsSystem32 folder and then after doing so press Ctrl, Alt, Del to throw up the task manger and select shut down then restart.  If all went well you should see you new boot screen. Note:[/i] Before doing any of this make sure you have made a backup copy of your original file somewhere so you can always go back to it if something goes wrong.

add a /NOGUIBOOT switch in the BOOT.INI file

example:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional\" /fastdetect /noguiboot

A backup copy of the original file isn\'t enough. I had a backup and installed a new boot screen, but the new boot screen would just stop. I thought, \"I\'ll just restore my backup!\" But no, with a messed up ntoskrnl.exe I couldn\'t even get to a command prompt. it would just blue screen with a page fault. Not knowing any way to get a prompt *and* be able to access the NTFS hd I had to repair XP from the installation CD. Not fun!

Is there a way to get a command prompt with NTFS access with a corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file?

Boot Screens

If you have multiple boot screens that you would like to select between, please look at this app.  http://www.flvip.com/bootxp (http://\"http://www.flvip.com/bootxp\"). Looks like a very nice utility.
Backup (copy) the file %windir%system32ntoskrnl.exe (most likely C:windowssystem32ntoskrnl.exe - the boot screen)
Download the .zip to your computer
Extract ntoskrnl.exe to a directory other than %windir%system32 (most likely C:windowssystem32)
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (hit F8 before the boot screen) or into true DOS (from a boot disk)
Overwrite the file %windir%system32ntoskrnl.exe (which should have been backed up) with the extracted exe
Reboot your computer as you normally would

if you boot off of your xp disc, assuming it is bootable, choose the option to use the repair. Your backup copy must be in %windir%windows or below though!! I had the same problem, and I know how much it can suck!  :-)

well its actually fairly easy to boot with a diff screen ... just copy your new kernel ( lets say you call it mykrnl.exe) to the dir ntoskrnl.exe is in .. and edit your boot.ini
you should have something like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional\" /fastdetect

just edit it to this :

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional hacked logo\" /fastdetect /kernel=mykrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional\" /fastdetect

then all you need to do is reboot ... then choise the one you want ...

I have the BootXp program and it works really good (for a freeware program). I don\'t have to touch my ntoskrnl.exe file or go into safe mode (and all that good stuff) and i can select from different boot screens it even has a random screen feature. try downloading it at download.com or bootxp.net  i hope this solves your problem.

in your C:windowssystem32 folder is a File Called ntoskrnel Back it Up In A new Folder For Safty Then Boot Into Safe Mode by Pressing F8 rapidly Before the Boot screen shows up in might take a min so dont panick so then go back to that same folder and drag and drop your new boot screen (ntoskrenl.exe Folder) it in the folder then say yes to replace the folder Good Luck.

Press F8 once after the PC has detected the IDE devices (hard drives and cd roms, while the tables are loading displaying all the devices and \"VERIFYING DMI POOL....\"), then select SAFE MODE or PROMPT ONLY... alternatively pressing F5 will take you straight into safe mode.

If you are still unable, open a command prompt in XP (hold windows key and press R, type CMD and hit enter) then put a BLANK floppy into your floppy drive and type:
format a: /s
[press enter]
LEAVE THE FLOPPY IN THE DRIVE and reboot your PC... then follow everyone else\'s direction on overwriting the ntoskrnl.exe in DOS...

If you still can\'t do it, Get a win98 cd and pop it in your cd drive, reboot, format your drive and install 98... you dont deserve XP.. LOL

You will need Resource Hacker. http://rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/ (http://\"http://rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/\")

Install it and go to c:windowssystem32.  Locate the file named: ntosknrl.exe  Make a copy of it and name the copy ntoskrnl.bak.  Then, using Resource Hacker, open the ntoskrnl.exe.  You will see a folder called bitmaps.  Open it, and the folder tree will expand to show 11 folders.  1 for the main bitmap, and 8-9 for the moving thingy, and 10-11 for the background.  It\'s really easy.
let me know if I can [email protected]

Here is my boot.in file:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional\" /fastdetect

Are you saying that if I change it to:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=\"Microsoft Windows XP Professional\" /fastdetect /kernel=mykrnl.exe

then it will boot with that file loading, which will be my startup screen?

On my machine I have Xp Corp Pro as the default ,ME,2000 PRO. 98 SE,& Linux. www.Sysinternals.com sells a little proggy (NTFSDOS) that gives you the ability to access NTFS from DOS (or win9x) . . . .  as in a  DOS boot disk . . . don\'t leave home without it!!!!!!!!

Free version is read only.

It\'s always a good practice to leave the first Gig or two of your hard drive as a fat16 partition with DOS, and Win98 on it, not to mention anything you might need for a restore like Partiton Magic, PKZip, winzip, WinRar, NTFS for DOS, etc. This way if you can\'t boot into your NT based operating system (NT, 2K, XP) you can at least get in there to fix it or have net access to look for tools or advice on how to fix it.

QUESTION: When I try to pull in my picture tp replace the old one (Using BOOTXP - Picture designed in PS7) It tells me one of the color palletts is wrong, and it screws up the colors...

How do I keep that crystal clear look, like everyone else has?

Hey

I wasted alot of time making an original image for my boot screen. To acheive that, I had to edit (through paint shop pro / notepad) the pallet winXP uses for its boot screen. I have the boot screen set up and all that jazz. For like half a second the propper colors are up, then the screen flashes black, and then all the colors are messed up. Does anyone know how to remedy this.... thanks.

You have reboot into safe mode, and replace the file while in safe mode. Then reboot into windows normally and it should \"work.\"

I want to use my own images for boot screens. When I replace the bitmap in the ntoskrnl.exe file with one of my bitmaps, the colors of the boot screen either comes out all whack or completely black. How can I fix this? Thanks.

Hey.
The boot logo u have spent much time creating in Photoshop is displaying in black because u have not saved it in the correct format.

Apparently the loading page is displayed in dos colours, so u have to use the DOS color range (palette). Also limited to 640x480 res. The palete is called 16.act. http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/xpbootlogo/16.act (http://\"http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/xpbootlogo/16.act\")

You must save it as a *.bmp and in 4bit. Use save as in Photoshop (not save for web).

I know u may think u're a pro with Photoshop (as do I), but when your colors are so limited, its almost imposible to make anything half as good as 32bit.

What I've done is made a simple loading page, but followed that with a very nice, high detail logon page. You must have your Welcome Page enabled in Control Panel for that to display at all though.
