Title: Damn Noisy Fan :(
Post by: Gouk on December 16, 2001, 08:13:13 PM
My PC about 3 days ago started sounding like a lawn mower and i dont know why. I decided to open up my pc and clean the CPU fan and the Power Supply fan.

This didnt solve the problem. What is the cause of the problem?

Most likely a bearing in the fan is going bad or needs greasing. You can try oiling the bearing by taking off the centre cover from the fan and placing a drop or two of lubricating oil.
If that doesnt work, its time to get a new fan.

I had the same problem with my power supply fan. I opened it up, (blow out all the dust while you\'re in there) removed the fan and found that there was a sticker covering the shaft. I peeled that back to get to the bearing. A drop or 2 of oil and I replaced the sticker. (a piece of tape will also work) Since this little fix-it the fan has been quiet for 3 years. I could have just as well replaced the fan,  but I\'m one who likes to keep things running and some jingle in my jeans.
