Title: movie maker 2.0
Post by: media on April 20, 2006, 01:54:31 PM
ok i didnt have movie maker at all so i downloaded the older version and then updated to 2.0, everything worked fine until i did a system restore. now every time i try to open movie maker, it says 'unspecified error' with an X. so i tried deleting the whole thing and reinstalling it, it wont let me delete the folder, i tried deleting everything inside and reinstalling and it didnt work, i ran it on safe mode, deleted the whole folder, went back to normal boot and the folder was there again but it was empty, i reinstalled it again and now it doesnt even have the moviemaker.exe file in it. i dont know what else to try, its so frustrating ! please help me

Do you have Service pack 2 installed for XP?

If not, you can install service pack 2 which should include MM 2.1

You will have to make sure that Automatic updates is enabled

Then use Internet Explorer and click on TOOLS>>Windows Updates
Choose Express when you reach the site
The best thing to do is too make sure that you have all High priority updates installed for SP1
Then return and install SP2

One note: on occassions, programs such as Daemon tools may cause problems
You may want to uninstall it beforehand

Also, I like to defrag the system before installing

I think I'm going to get uninvolved in this one Media
You sound like your version of XP is illegal

This really isn't worth our times, there may be methods to repair MM on the web if you search around
Not able to update to SP2 sure doesn't help

Also, I notice this
O23 - Service: avast! iAVS4 Control Service (aswUpdSv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (file missing)

Did you remove Avast?
If so, I would run the uninstall utility from Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html (http://\"http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html\")

It doesn't appear to be running properly
NOTE: without updating to SP2, I would ensure you have a properly running Anti-virus on your computer
After you run the uninstall utility from Avast
I would either reinstall it or another version such as AVG or Avira

I would also ensure that you have a good firewall installed
Sunbelt kerio is a good one
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm (http://\"http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm\")
The full version becomes a limited free version after 30 days

Also, I would uninstall Viewpoint Manager and/or viewpoint media player from add/remove programs
In addition, you should update your version of Java too the latest
In your control panel open the Java icon
Under The General tab>>Delete Files
Leave all options selected and click OK

Under the Update button click UPDATE NOW
IF the updater won't work, you can manually download the update from
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp (http://\"http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp\")

After you are updated you can access your add/remove programs and remove any older versions of Java or older updates

yea avast pissed me off a lot so i removed it, i ran the real uninstall thing though and now its fully gone. i did the update thing for java too, and also removed viewpoint and everything with it. any way i can get the SP2 ? or are you not going to help me with that ? well im still tryin to get this mm2 working again, maybe ill figure it out most likely not haha.

Can I see an updated Hijackthis log please

Could you also
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as MM.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
@echo off
cd C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
dir /s /a > C:\MM.txt
notepad C:\MM.txt
del /q C:\MM.txt

Double click on MM.bat, a text file will open, can you copy and paste the contents back here please

Can you navigate to the following folder
C:\Program Files\movie maker

Open the movie maker folder and double click on moviemk.exe

If you do get an error message, let me know the exact error message please

I'm not sure if this will help
Some of your files are wrong size or in the wrong directory
but what if you download and save to desktop from below
Wmm.zip

Unzip too the following folder
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
Reboot the computer

Does that help?

i followed what he said to do and it actually worked. i have no idea what it did, but it works now. thanks for your time, your the man. /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' /> , maybe you could explain what that did exactly so i know ?

What on that page was your fix?
Title: movie maker 2.0
Post by: media on April 26, 2006, 12:59:21 AM
i did this,

This instance of the problem is easy to fix. Go to a command prompt (Start|Programs|Accessories|Command Prompt) and type

Set

followed by the Enter key

The resulting output usually contains a line like:

TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\UserName\LOCALS~1\Temp

The stuff after the = sign is the path to the temporary files folder. You need to change directory to the parent folder of this temporary files folder (usually C:\DOCUME~1\UserName\LOCALS~1) by executing command

CD C:\DOCUME~1\UserName\LOCALS~1

followed by the Enter key

Then check that the Temp sub-folder exists using the dir command. If it doesn't already exist, create it using

MD Temp

followed by the Enter key

In my case the folder was there but the attributes included the read-only flag, so I reset the attributes by executing command

attrib -r +a -s -h Temp

followed by the Enter key

Start Movie Maker and it works.

works fine now.

Who would of thunk?  /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Thanks for letting me know media
Hopefully, this helps others in the future

I hope you didn't use the system restore method also?
It's a good thing you have SP2 installed now, much safer!
