Title: Computer (relatively new) keeps rebooting! help asap!
Post by: seekdestroy16 on May 02, 2006, 06:38:14 PM
My computer is for some reason rebooting over and over again but will not boot into Windows XP Home. Last night it was working fine and I do recall seeing a message from my norton antivirus stating that it had detected a Trojan that I have downloaded by accident and it also said that it had deleted it. about 3 months ago I had spilled ice-tea on the face plate which fortunetely did not get into any electrical parts of my computer but just made the power button really sticky so from then on everytime I turned on my computer it would stick and make my computer shut down before completely starting up and I had to wait until the button had moved out completely until it let the computer start up fine without it shutting again. It has worked from then till now without any problems and all the sudden this morning I turn it on and it keeps rebooting. I googled this issue and some tips that I found was to take the battery out and put it back in which will reset the BIOS and supposedly make things better but I called my computer manufacterer and he said he doesnt think removing the battery will do anything but he is not sure if its a hardware issue or a software issue unless I take it down to his store and get him to look at it. If it is a software issue then it will cost me like 90 bucks an hour! But I want to figure this out myself so I can learn first hand how to fix things. If it is a software issue (like a virus or something) is it possible to recover all my music, videos and software and still be able to reinstall?. I also got an error message saying that there was an IDE driver error and I had to take out my newer sony dvd drive and make my main Lite-On dvd drive the master drive which I did and the error message did not appear anymore but my computer is still rebooting. Any sollutions?. Thanks in advance.

Try some scans. There could be an infection on your computer. My best suggestion would to be to use a "system restore" to help with your porblem. Just boot up the disk, and follow the instructions.

this sounds like the same prob me and my friend had.
it was a virus that kept restartin the pc,a timer would come up sayin that the thing would shut down after 60secs and then it would reboot and the same thing would happen over and over again and again.
what i had to do was go to my other friends house and download a patch on to a floppy disc then i had to change the start up drive to start from the floppy then i had to reinstall the whole heap from the beginning.
unfortunatley i lost everything as i didnt have any backups.
but instead of payin someone a fortune i just foned my isp who kindly walked me through the whole process.
hopefully this will help.
