Hi,
I don't know if anyone can help.
Norton antivirus (2003) Is picking up the virus bloodhound.w32. It's attached itself to c:\WINDOWS\system32.wininet.dll.
Which is write protected. I have tried various Virus software packages with no luck, none of them can repair or delete the file. (WHich I know I dhouldn't do as it's a windows directory). I have also tried solutions from other websites but nothing seems to solve the problem.
The symptoms appear to be:
White background as my desktop wallpaper
Lots of 'click here' for antispyware pop ups, and the system has slowed right down.
I'm not that technically minded and don't really understand much jargon.
Can anyone help?

Do not allow Norton's to delete the file please
Can you post a couple logs and I'll take a look at them when I get back from work

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1 (http://\"http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp451.exe\")
Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version
==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5 (http://\"http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe\")
When installing, under "Additional Options" UNCHECK
"Install background guard"
"Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the auto updater won't work
Please manually update from this link

Download [color=\"#3333FF\"]smitRem.exe[/color] (http://\"http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1\") ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double-click on the smitRem.exe file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
We'll need it later
Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode
==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer
Open the SmitRem folder located on the desktop
Double-click on the RunThis.bat file, as shown by the arrow in the image above, to start the tool.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Remain in safe mode after the fix is complete
==Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt
If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode
==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
*1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted
Reboot back to Normal mode
I need to see a few logs please, even if it takes a couple responses
1. Run a Scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post a fresh log
2. Post the whole report from Ewidos'
3. Post the the contents of the log from Smitfraudfix>>Located here C:\rapport.txt
4. Post the whole contents of the log from SmitRem>>Located here C:\Smitrem.txt

1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
6. Uncheck "Security" or Make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.
OK your way out
Log off your user account and log back on again if anything unchecked
Does that help your background problems?
Do you now see the Ewido report?
Do you see this file on your computer, Exact file name and location
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oleext.dll <-this file
If it's still present we will have to remove it
When you logged into safe mode, did you choose your account to log in with?

When I logged into safe mode I didn't have the option of my account. Only administrator. Or my girlfriends.
SO I went in on administrator.

Can you do me a favor please
Reboot back into safe mode and log in with Your account
If you can't log in with your account in safe mode
Run it in normal mode>>ensure to reboot the computer afterwards
Again do the following
==Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt
Reboot back to Normal mode

Do you have either Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 or Spybot 1.4 installed?
They are 2 programs I wouldn't be without
I can directly link you to them if you don't have them, they are yours for free
If you do have them, can you run updated scans with both and post a fresh hijackthis log

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Here's my normal recommendation
and please hold onto both of these programs
Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://\"ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/aawsepersonal.exe\")
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
In Ad-Aware
Click START
Click the radio button to perform a Smart system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button
RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process
Back in Windows
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE (http://\"http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button\")
or HERE (http://\"http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html\")
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED
Reboot the computer again if anything in Red was found and fixed
Post back one final hijackthis log and I'll just give you some final recommendations to help keep your system clean
NOTE: This entry in your log may indicate problems with Norton's

It's 2003, which is when i bought the computer. I've only recently gone online, which is why it is out of date.
I have purchased (although not installed yet) spyware doctor - total protection from pc tools.
SHould I uninstall norton and install this?

Spyware Doctor is a legit product, it also appears it's Spyware realtime protection does and excellent job
But it is not the same as an Active AV
Here's what I suggest
download and save to your desktop the Installer to either of these AV's
Both have Free versions, ensure you download the free version at the links
DON'T install the AV yet, but ensure you have saved the installer to desktop
Pick only one of the 2 below
AVG 7 by Grisoft (http://\"http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5\")
Avast Home Edition by ALWIL (http://\"http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html\")
After you save the download to desktop
Remove your version of Norton's
Use add/remove programs and remove it all, if you have problems
Use the following link to ensure it is all removed

Afterwards, double click and install your new AV
Follow the prompts, ensure that it is updated after installation and run a full system scan

If everything is running better
We should flush all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idleGo to START>>RUN>>In the open field
Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer

Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point

After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background
Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis
In addition: Open Spybot 1.4
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Immunize after every update
+I would opt to hold onto CleanUp! and Ewido
Ewido will become a limited free version after a couple of weeks
Still, a great scanner to update and run on a monthly basis
*Keep up to date on Windows updates (High Priorities)
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure
Make sure you check for updates at least once a month!

Before updating I would run the disk defragmentor on your computer
START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Disk Defragmenter
If you haven't ran this in awhile, it could take a bit of time to finish, let it run uninterrupted
I find it best ran in safe mode
Then reboot back to Normal mode and visit Windows Updates!
If your on dialup, you may choose to order the free CD

If you haven't done it yet, go ahead and install Spyware Doctor
It does the same job as Ad-Aware or Spybot
It's realtime protection is very good
Use it since you purchased it

Try going to Start>>All programs>>Norton and try uninstalling it, if that won't work
