Ok, everytime i go to play a game, for example "age of empires 2" my CPU usage goes right to a 100%. I found this out by opening the task manager. It really wont let me play because it gives me so much lagg that i have to get off reboot and try again (even know it's going to do the same thing) Im pretty sure it's not spyware or virus related because my computer is clean. Ive done checks with loads of spyware and anti-viruses and they all came up 0. Im really running out of options here. It may have something to do with the registry? im not to sure, and i really didn't want to mess around with it because im not good with registry. Can anyone help me plz?
-
my computer specs are:
256 Mb ram
1100Mhz
1.10 Ghz
Intel Pentium intel® celeron(tm)CPU
1 harddrive total size 37.2 Gb, Free space 22.9 Gb
graphics card nVidia geforce2 MX/MX 400 (i think this is the main problem)
I also had people tell me i may need more ram, because XP uses 256 MB of ram alone. And to play games i should have a minimum of 512Mb.
Oh and i forgot to mention, it only started doing this a few weeks ago, with the lagg. thats why i was saying somethign maybe corrupted in the registry or something. But i only use my computer to play Age of empires and search the web alittle. Thats about it. I try to keep only important stuff on it.

Let's eliminate malware
You know the drill
From my signature below, download and save too a permanent folder of it's own onto your harddrive
Hijackthis 1.99.1
Open Hijackthis.exe
Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important
-
hopefully ur still on... I enabled everything on startup. Didn't make much of a difference..

Not sure if this will help, but you have a leftover from Panda AV
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: avldr - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avldr.dll
After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
Reboot the computer
any help?
-
Im not totally positive if it helped.. Cant get a game going, i will surely try and post back asap.
-
nope it didn't fix it..

I'm still waiting too??
This isn't the first time you have come here with problems from this computer
Even when your log is clean
You have an older video card and you could up your RAM
You could try updating video drivers, I would purchase more Ram too
This is a recommendation
Since you removed SP2
Why not start clean
Go to your computer manufacturers website and look for updated drivers
Go to Nvidia's website and look for latest driver
Put them all on a CD or Thumbdrive
Do a clean install, afterwards, the very first thing
Install drivers needed
Get to Windows updates and install all latest updates(High Priorties) and Service pack 2
Get an AV installed, i would also reinstall SpywareBlaster
Spybot and ad-aware
Don't go installing other filesharing programs that contain spyware such as the free version of BearShare
This may be the quickest resolution to your problems
-
ok when i do a clean installation. you mean of XP right? if i reinstall it will i be able to still use the same product key and such?
Also my computer was handmade.. i only no the manufactures of the hardware that inside the computer
/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
-
If it's a legit version of XP, yes use the same product key and reactivate
If it's not a legit version, sorry, I can't help you out
If you know the manufacturers hardware installed, visit their respective sites too download drivers
Including sound, motherboard drivers
A tool to help you out if needed
SIW.exe (http://\"http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html\")
or

Ok, just got back from reinstalling XP. also just got done dling and reinstalling Ad-aware spybot and spyblaster. But, now i keep getting this pop-up from "Messenger Service" saying
"CRITICAL ERROR MESSAGE - REGISTRY DAMAGED
Yoir Windows registry is corrupted and needs to be cleaned immediately.
Compromisted registry files can lead to the following:
1. Complete access of your PC (including online banking) by hackers
2. Slow speeds resulting in slow downloads of internet files
3. The compromise of personal information stored on your computer
4. Complete system failure resulting in the need for a complete reinstall of your hard drive.
To fix this problem:
1. Open Internet explorer from the start meni
2. in the URL Field type - www.winregistrycleaner.com
3. Note that all version of windows are supported.
Please note that once you visit www.winregistrycleaner.com and install the cleaner program you will not recive any more reminders or pop-ups like this one.
WHAT CAN I DO???
-
That means that you didn't follow my advice
Install drivers needed
Get to Windows updates and install all latest updates(High Priorties) and Service pack 2
Get an AV installed, i would also reinstall SpywareBlaster
Spybot and ad-aware
You probably haven't updated too SP2 yet
Messenger service looks like it's still running, in SP2 it's disabled by default
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Messenger
Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
Do the same for Alerter
-
Ok now.. FOr some reason it wont let me access windows update. It's just freezes and doesn't load the page.
-
Important note: Ensure the xp firewall is enabled
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/n...rnmore/icf.mspx (http://\"http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx\")
Until you have a chance to update to SP2 or install a better firewall such as Sunbelt Kerio's free version
Take a look at Windows Update troubleshooter page
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot (http://\"http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot\")
Some entries that may help
Manual installation instructions for Windows Update controls
Scan Hangs at 0%
Download stops or freezes. The Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window appears but download never starts
Search for Updates Loops
-
the troubleshooting page does not work. It's like all of microsoft isn't working....
-
What browser are you using?
Did you do a clean install or reinstall over the top
-
i believe i did Upgrade(recommended)
-
Okay, that was question 2, what about question 1?
-
i first tryed with mozilla.. then with IE, niether worked. IE froze for windows update (had to alt ctrl delete the page) and the trobuleshooter just stays there, nothing shows up on page.
-
You must use IE to get to Windows update or the troubleshooter page
-
i did, niether page worked.
-
I don't know what the heck is happening on your side
You more or less did a reinstall over the top and not a clean install
Can you open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Hosts file manager
click the Open In Notepad button
A text file will open, copy>paste back here the whole contents please

Let's take a look at something
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)

Not sure what the problem is
What are you running for Internet
Cable, DSL?
Are you installing any security software before going to windows updates?
Are you changing any settings in IE before trying WU?
Can I see a new hijackthis log please
-
ok finally! all i had to do was run ad-aware and spybot.. it seems that alexa got onto my computer (somehow) after the installation. I never thought it would happen so fast... anyway i can finally get into windows update!

Remember to check your hardware manufacturers websites for driver updates if any
Especially when running SP2

im not sure what site there at?
I have a soyocomputer celeron proccessor
-
ok i went to go defrag. and it freezes about 10 minutes or so into it. then it just cancels the defrag and goes to the defragment screen.

Try defragging in safe mode without networking
Don't open any other windows well it's doing it's job
Ensure you try and install latest Nvidia drivers from Nvidia's site
Uninstall the old drivers from add/remove programs and reboot before installing the newest drivers
Get more Ram, hardware you can use
I gave you links to SWI.exe or Everest.exe to help identify hardware
And if you are online game playing, note:
* Close all programs in the background: this should be obvious, but there are many people who are running ICQ in the background while playing. You need the full bandwidth for your game.
* Choose a host with a good connection and a fast CPU: the host has to handle a bit more than the other computers, so it should be the computer with the fastest connection and a reasonably fast processor.
* Turn the speed down: the game will still run slow but more smoothly than at a high speed setting. Many newbies turn the speed up when the lag is high, and I hate that! They make everything only worse, the men will jump around the screen and be totally uncontrollable.
* Set a maximum ping in the game setup (only available in Kali): while this feature is not 100 % reliable, it blocks at least all users with a very slow connection. Set the maximum to 800 or below (the more players there are in the game, the lower the ping should be). Note that the ping will rise will the others download the map. When setting a maximum ping, you might also block users that have other programs running in the background until the game starts. So you can alternatively set no maximum ping and then watch the ping values. Request the players with a high ping to leave, and if they don't, kick them :-)
* Not too many animals in the scenario: they produce a lot of overhead because their positions have to be updated; just take them out of the map, and the game will run smoother.
* A cable modem will not necessarily help: a cable modem has a much higher throughput, but it still runs through TCP/IP, so the latency time will be nearly the same as with a normal modem or ISDN. ATM, a new network/transport/data link protocol, will offer shorter latency times and an awesome (>150 Mbit/s) bandwidth - but that is the future. Just do not buy a cable modem with the expectation of faster games - you will get much faster downloads, though.

ok tryed running defrag in safemode and still freezes at same spot.
-
At what point is it freezing at
Defrag should indicate what it's doing at the time
at the bottom of the screen
In your display properties(right click empty spot on desktop and select Properties)
I believe by default, Screen saver is set to 10 minutes
try setting screen saver to NONE in the drop down menu and in Power options set to Always ON
You can change those settings back after you defrag
When you say freezing, how much time are you giving it to continue at the point it stops at?
Is there still harddrive light activity happening? Maybe your not giving it enough time
-
ok, did what u told me to and still froze.
it stops at 28% compacting files. It freezes about 10 minutes into defrag. If i let it sit there, about 30 minutes later it will just stop the defrag and go back to main screen. Not saying defrag is complete or anything.
-
Again, I'm unsure what the problem can be
Hmmm
These steps you should make sure you follow
In your display properties(right click empty spot on desktop and select Properties)
I believe by default, Screen saver is set to 10 minutes
try setting screen saver to NONE in the drop down menu and in Power options set to Always ON
Make sure those above settings are applied and set
Shut down the computer
Wait at least 30 seconds and then boot the computer to safe mode by tapping F8 before windows loads
SAFE MODE without networking
Once in safe mode
Make sure no unnecessary programs are running in the background, this includes AV
Go to Start>>all programs>>accessories>>system tools>>disk cleanup
Let this finish calculating and then Ok to do the disk cleanup
With No other windows open start Disk Defragger
Once it has started defragging, DO NOT open any other windows
Let it run uninterrupted
-
did the same thing.
-
I just posted that half hour ago
You sure nothing is running in the background interfering and/or are you giving it enough time to finish?
-
Im postitive. I rebooted and made sure nothing was running (i even shutdown AVG) and it still freezes at same spot.
-
You shut down screen saver and put power options to always on?
You ran it in safe mode?
Not that this will help
But can you open Disk Defragment and click on Analyze
When it's done click View Report>>Save as>>Save this report too desktop then copy>Paste back the whole contents
-
ah!!!!!!!! i didn[t have the screen saver thing on "always on" i had it on Home/office desk.
Im gonna go try again and ill get back to u soon.
-
Make sure that the screen saver is set to (NONE)!!!!
That is found in the drop down menu
Then under Power set to ALWAYS ON
-

I thought i did a clean install. Although even when i did New installation it did just about the same thing as upgrade. Because everything that was on the computer before was still here. So im not sure whats going on.
Abnd like i didn't reinstall bearshare or limewire. there just still here. There not in add/remove programs.. I removed the bearshare folder and limewire folder from C:Program Files. But there here still...
Ok i believe i got rid of all the limewire and bearshare files. Here is what i got out of it. I reanalyzed with the defragment thing and heres what i got.
