Title: Does anyone know how to...
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2002, 09:31:00 AM
I installed Win2K and Win98 on a same hard drive.
(the HD has been partitioned to two 2GBs, one for Win2K, the other one for Win98)

I have lots software that I need to install.

Is there anyway that I can only install the software ONCE not TWICE?

It takes too many space and my time to do it TWICE.

Technically no.  You have to install the software once for each OS.  But you can accomplish what you want to do.  Simply install the programs in the same location each time.  The second time you install, it\'ll simply re-copy the files.  You need to do this so it\'ll make the necessary registry entries, update system files, etc. for each OS.

Only downside, is if you want to uninstall.  Once you uninstall from one OS the files are gone, and you\'ll be unable to uninstall from the second OS.  I would either:  a) copy the entire program directory, uninstall from one OS, then rename the copy of the directory back to the original, then uninstall from the second OS (this should work decent, unless it depends on an install log that is kept in the program directory to do the uninstall) or /cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' /> uninstall from the last OS it was installed to (so if you installed to win98, then win2k, you would first uninstall from win2k), boot back to the first OS, reinstall, then uninstall (this will recreate the install log if it\'s kept in the program\'s directory, and you should have no problems uninstalling).

I remember the days of dual booting and sharing programs.
Same way you said. Did save lots of hard drive space.

Dear josetann :

Thanks a lot for your reply !
What I want to do is :
1. Generate 3 partitions(FAT32).
2. Hide partition 2 and install Windows 98 to partition 1.
3. Install the software which I need to partition 3(drive D:).
4. Use ghost to back partition 1 to partition 2.
5. Un-Hide partition 2 and Hide partition 1.
6. Upgrade Win 98 (partition 2) to Win2K and convert it to NTFS.
7. Un-Hide partition 1 and change the driver letter to E:

When boot from partition 1:
partition 1 : Win 98         C:
partition 2 : Win 2K        NTFS
partition 3 : software       D:

When boot from partition 2:
partition 1 : Win 98         E:
partition 2 : Win 2K        C:
partition 3 : software       D:

Dear friends, what\'s your opinion about this solution ?
