Title: My computer won't start windows
Post by: Snowy456 on August 04, 2006, 10:49:33 AM
Hello,

When I start my computer it works until you get past the log in screen. I get the following
error message after i log in:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe at 018f:00401f31

Also when i boot the computer and am at the BIOS screen everything says not detected.
I have tried a couple things already to fix it that i found on the microsoft webpage such as:

1. In Windows Me, use an Emergency Boot Disk to boot the computer to MSDOS mode Without CDROM Support. For more information about how to create an Emergency Boot Disk, click the article numbers below to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
267287 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267287/) How to create a Startup disk in Windows Me
271823 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271823/) How to create a Windows Me Startup disk manually
2. At the A:\ Prompt, type Ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then press ENTER.
3. Restart the computer.

When i do this it says it cannot find C:\explorer.exe

I have a boot disk but i have misplaced my win98 cd. I have the cab files on my c drive if that helps any.
I also have anouther windows 98 computer that has all the win98 files on it. (cab files and such.)

The computer has the same error when i try to start it in safe mode but i can access the command only prompt.

I have found a possible solution to my problem:

Method 1: Repair Internet Explorer
1. Restart the computer to a command prompt:• Insert the Windows 98 Emergency Startup disk in the floppy, and then start the computer.

-or-
• Press the CTRL key while you start the computer, and then select Command Prompt Only from the Windows Startup Menu.

2. At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini, and then press the ENTER to open the System.ini file in MS-DOS Editor.
3. To navigate through MS-DOS Editor, use the arrow keys. Under the section labeled [Boot], change the following lineshell=Explorer.exe

to: shell=Progman.exe

4. Press ALT+F to scroll down to Exit, and then press ENTER. Select Yes to save the Windows\System.ini file, and to return to the command prompt.
5. Restart the computer. The operating system starts Program Manager.
6. On the File menu, click Run, type control appwiz.cpl, and then click OK to open the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box.
7. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove.
8. Click the Repair Internet Explorer option, and then click OK. Complete the wizard to repair Internet Explorer, and when you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
9. Repeat steps 1 through 5, with the following exception: In step 3, change the line "shell=progman.exe" to "shell=explorer.exe".

I did the first few steps with no problems but when i got to the add/remove program the list was blank: blank as in no entries what so ever. please help. how do i get the list to appear.

Can you do the following please
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\INET20091\SERVICES.EXE

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer
Back in windows
Delete this folder
C:\WINDOWS\INET20091 <-this folder

Can you let me know if this file exists, exact location and file name
C:\explorer.exe <-this file

Post back a fresh hijackthis log
Could you also, close hijackthis
Then
Supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
ReOpen Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

the folder inet20019 was not there when i went to delete it.
the file explorer.exe is on my computer and it is located in c:\windows\

There are many files/folders that are on my computer that i do not remember putting on. i'm nervouse about deleting them because last time i deleted something the computer quit working so i just want to know if it safe to delete these products. here is the folder names and the file names:

c:\programfiles\haptek\player  the exe file is called HapAX player

c:\programfiles\Intcodec the only file that is in the folder is uninstall (i think this is the one i uninstalled just before my computer messed up so im not touching it untill you tell me how to fix it, thanks) there is also a icon on the desktop with the same icon that the uninstall has only it says run.

c:\programfiles\irfanview the main file in this folder is i_view32 im not sure if this one is needed for the computer that is why i am asking

c:\programfiles\plus! the only file is sysagent but there is anouther folder. dont know if the computer needs this one or not

c:\programfiles\Sislan this one just has the uninstall program in it. not sure if the computer needs it or not

here is the fresh highjack this log:

Let's just keep on one path and see if we can get this computer running clean
Please don't go and manually delete any folders you find
Most are legit, one is related to your Internet connection

It's nice to see you have Spybot 1.4 installed
But please use this next program too
Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://\"ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/aawsepersonal.exe\")

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Close out after it is updated, as we will need it later
Open Ad-Aware SE 1.06
Click START
Click the radio button to Smart system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Back in Windows
I don't see any AntiVirus software running on this computer
From the 2 below
Download and Install the free version of either
AVG 7 by Grisoft (http://\"http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5\")

Avast Home Edition by ALWIL (http://\"http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html\")
ONLY install one, more than one will cause conflicts

When your new Anti-Virus is installed
Make sure it is up to date and run a full system scan
Let it clean whatever it finds
Reboot the computer afterwards

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please

Do you still have DAP installed?
If not, the entry in Hijackthis is a leftover
I don't recommend it

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://google.icq.com/search/search_frame.php (http://\"http://google.icq.com/search/search_frame.php\")
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://google.icq.com (http://\"http://google.icq.com\")
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DownloadAccelerator] "C:\Program Files\DAP\DAP.EXE" /STARTUP

The next one does not need to run on startup, you can start it manually
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [warez] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WAREZ P2P CLIENT\WAREZ.EXE" -h

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer
Find and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\DAP <-this folder

Back in Windows
access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content

Post back and let me know how things are running please

Title: My computer won't start windows

Can you do the following

Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.2 (http://\"http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe\")
Don't run it yet

CleanUp! attempts to delete files from various temporary directories (including download directories/caches),
as well as emptying the Recycle Bins.
If you make a habit of saving files that you wish to keep in any of these places,  they will be deleted when CleanUp! is run.
Please move them too a different location before we run this tool if the above is true
Note: It is generally considered poor practice to use temporary folders or the Recycle Bin to store files you intend to keep.

Have you defragmented your harddrive lately, if not, let's do it now, we will be doing this in safe mode
So please first do the following

Right click an empty spot on the desktop and Select Properties
Under the Screen Saver tab
In the drop down menu set ScreenSaver to (NONE)
Under Power settings (Energy Savings)
Click the Settings tab
In the drop down menu set Power Scheme to ALWAYS ON
Apply and OK out of there

Print the rest of these instructions or save them too a text file saved to desktop so you can follow along in safe mode

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

In safe mode
==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start >  Programs menu).
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Restart the computer, remain in safe mode
NOTE: The first time you run CleanUp! it may prompt to run in Demonstration mode
Deny this, we want to run the actual cleanup!!
If you do first run in demo mode, ensure to run it again

Go to START>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Select SCANDISK
Under "Type of Test"
Select STANDARD, ensure "Automatically Fix Errors" is selected
Then click START
Let this finish then exit Scandisk

Go back to START>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Select Disk Defragment
Ensure proper Drive is selected and click OK
This can take awhile, depending on the last time this was performed and size of disk and amount of space used
Let it finish
When it's done

Reboot back to Normal mode
Let's check for altered or corrupt files
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
sfc
Hit OK
Ensure "Scan for Altered Files" is selected then click START
This won't take too long, let me know if it prompts for missing or damaged files and which ones

How long have you had this program installed?
Virtual Keyboard TotalAccess
I've only seen it in one other log, it appears legit, just want to make sure it's not giving you problems

Looks good
Strengthen the protection on this computer a bit

*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")   After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis
In addition, open Spybot 1.4
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Immunize after every update

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background
Keeping it set to autoupdate will ensure you always have the latest definitions

How are you connected to the internet?
I'm not sure about your system specs.
but you should include a software firewall in protections
Post back and let me know if you need a free firewall
