I followed the directions to make a bootable W2K disk exactly. I ve used the newest version od CDRWIN. But when I try to boot I get an error message saying: Wrong emulation mode. It is also not possible to start the setup program within windows. I get an error that setup has cause errors an will be closed. Can this be caused because my Original W2K disk is OEM ? And is there a workaround?
thank you in advance

First, did you follow the instructions 100%? Several people said they did, but then when I walked them through they missed one small, but crucial step. First...in CDRWIN choose custom emulation. Second make sure the load sector count is 4. Those are the two biggies.
To be honest I haven\'t worked with a Win2k OEM cd so I\'m not sure if that could cause the problem. Can you post the list of files that\'s in the root of your cd? Not the contents, just the names.
-
I have done that two times step by step and I am sure that I ve done everything right. the files in the root of the cd are as follows:
AUTORUN.inf
CDROM_IP.5
CDROM_NT.5
cdrom_sp.tst
READ1ST.TXT
README.DOC
SETUP.EXE
thanks again

Those are the same files I have too. I\'ll go post instructions on extracting the boot.bin file yourself, in case that\'s what\'s giving you the problems. Let me know if it works and if it does, send the boot.bin file my way so I can post it for others to use.
-
Ok I updated the Win2k bootable CD article with instructions on how to extract the boot.bin file yourself. Let me know if it helps you out.
-
Hey, thank you guys for this discussion. I tried to make a boot win2k disk yesterday using your site\'s instructions and it didn\'t work. Today I noticed that in \"Load Sector Count\" by default is 1, which after a days work not to difficult to confuse with 4. I fixed that and it worked like magic. Thank you again. Extracting boot.bin is also fun, thank you.

-
You\'re the third guy now with that problem...heh. I\'ll go update the page to stress that part of it.
-
O.K. let me say thank you first.I burnt the CD with my own boot.bin file, but still no luck, somehow the burnt CD hangs in the boot-process (no error-message,cd is spinning and spinning but nothing happens). to be sure i tried my original W2K-CD and it works. The only thing i can imagine, is that the type of CD-Recordables I use are causing the problem. I baught them really cheap (50-pack, gigastorage 700MB) and I had some problems in the last week with Data-Backups too. I will buy some better ones in the next days an try again. I will post again as soon as I have done that.
thanks again

Ok, if it hangs in boot-up, you probably left the \"Load Sector Count\" at its default of 1. Three people have already had problems, and each one was traced back to that. It MUST be at 4 to work. Try one more time, making sure that the last tab in the advanced section has the correct setting (you can re-read the article, I put that in bold so it\'s hard to miss now
). If you have changed that to 4...then I\'m not sure what it could be. The CD itself works right? Just won\'t boot?
When you figure out what it was let me know. And I\'d recommend doing any future testing on a CDRW disk, then when it works right you can burn to a CDR. If you do a lot of experimenting like I do, that can save a lot of CD\'s.
-
Dear Josetan,
problem solved, as I suspected it was the combination of my burner and the CDR\'s. I buyed some Verbatim-CDR\'s yesterday evening and with just one try the CD works fine. So i want to thank you and also appologize to you because the problem was clearly on my end!

Glad to hear it works. Now I can add one more thing to my list of troubleshooting questions
-
Hmmm.. I posted the somwhat the sam instructions a few months ago on my website.
If you\'re interested there are some extra tips on my website
http://www.bink.nu (http://\"http://www.bink.nu\") and click boot CD
Have fun!

I posted my instructions about a week after SP1 came out. I don\'t provide files other than the boot.bin file, because you get into shady territory when you provide the actual files off of the CD.
You can make your URL clickable, just surround it with the [ url] and [ /url] tags (I put spaces there, so it won\'t try to make that text linkable).

Hi,
As per your instructions, I had burns 3 set of CDR of Bootable Win2kPRO,. Last nite after viewing your forrum & acticles, I\'ve downloaded the latest copy of CDRWIN and using the same setting as yours.
I might have make some mistake for the first 2 pcs, but for the 3rd one, I\'m very, very sure, I open up your article just to double check I did the right way. I had also check 4 times
on the \"Load Sector Count = 4\" setting before I click on the \"START\" button.
The burn run fine with no errors.
So I rebooted the PC with that CDR in the CDROM.
I was watching anxiously when the moment the finishing the
BIOS ram count, and I think they found soemthing on the CDR, but then instead of booting the WIN2KPRO CDR, it\'s prompt me this message \"Press any key to boot CD.\"
So, I give it a enter key but the PC reboot!
Something is worng somewhere, can you help me , pls?
But I burn the
I have this file in my CDR\'s root directory.
[I386]
[WIN2kSP1]
_table_.sys
Autorun.inf
Cdrom_IP.5
Cdrom_NT.5
Setup.exe
and some others apps which I have added into different directory and also not forgetting your win2kboot.bin
Is it true I can see some of my apps\'s directory in a long filename format under Win98?
One final question I wish to ask before I waste another CDR.
Does your win2k bootable CD article allows the CDR to be booted and run all the setup routine automatically just like the booting from the floppy?
Pls email me at [email protected]
Thanks for your tips, anyway, they are great!
Regards.

hehe had the same problems before.. we called it the endless rebooting process hehe anyhow... we tried openning the CPU and checked the memory modules... we then knew that the modulse were a bit loose... so we transfered it to the other slot and tried booting again... then it worked
-
I had the exact same problem, the cd would hang on bootup forever untill I ejected it...I found out that you HAVE to use cd-rwin, I suffered the freeze when trying touse nero (cause I did not register cdrwin)....after I registered cdrwin and followed the file word for word, my first bootup was a success...also, another thing I noticed was I did not do build/burn so...I just selected (copy files on the fly) with disc at once, you need a faster processor to do this procedure but it shouldn\'t require that much more processing power and it worked flawlessly.
The files in the root dir does not matter as long as you have the required two files..the file list I have is the same as yours but also includes a .nfo file from the group who gave out free copies from the local microsoft seminar in hawaii..

Hi.
Just a small Question...
I have the KT7A-Raid MB, and I need the HTP370 drivers installed to be able to install on the raid.
Is there an easy description somewhere that describes how to add these drives to a win2k boot cd so that I don\'t need to sit there with a extra floppy?
thx.
isol
-
Easy? Don\'t think so. Believe you have to start an unattended script, I\'ll try to dig up some info later on that.
Yes it can be done though, not sure just how hard it\'d be.
-
Ok, thanks...
I\'ll just try to make the cd without them.
I guess I\'ll manage to slip one floppy in at the right time... :-)

hey guys, it\'s amazing how many freaks out there have the same problems i have ...
i\'m a freak!!!
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> i think it\'s great that you all put your effort and time into writing instructions on all those things. i\'m glad i can just go on the internet and find anything so i don\'t have to do any more research but just follow your instructions.
i have a question: how the heck did you know about cdrwin read sector 20 to 20 and boot option load sector count = 4?
lately, i\'ve been reading a lot about el torrito and all those things but these methods never crossed my path ...
or is it just that one really needs to get deep into interrupt handling knowledge and so on?
/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
thanks again!!! great site - honestly, i think steven bink\'s page is ok, i found that one, first. but your site is just even a little more useful to me, personally, because i like to do EVERYTHING myself, including creation of the bootdisk.bin file, the method of which was not descrived on steven\'s page.
cheers.
-
Thanks! Well the original article didn\'t have instructions on extracting your own boot.bin file, but someone had a german version I believe it was, and the boot.bin file on the site wouldn\'t work for them. So I dug up the instructions to extract the boot.bin file yourself, and I added it in. Once I have time I\'ll put up instructions on how to make a bootable WinMe CD. Probably be the same way this was, first\'ll be the image file with instructions on how to use it (this one\'s easier btw) then instructions for making your own image file.

I have tried your directions for creating a making updated bootable cd with Windows 2k Advanced Server and win2k professional. No matter what I do, I get the error that it can not find ntldr. I have compared my original window 2kpro and my windows 2k advanced server in sector view and compared it to the copies I have made. It seems to me that the boot information is not residing at the same address as the original. When comparing sectors on orginal win2kpro verses my updated bootable I find that sectory 15 is the same on both cd\'s, but starting with sectory 16, I start seeing some differences. ntldr is in the same i386 directory on both disks, I did not change or move it.
Using wincd3.8d also tried nero 5. I am very sure that I followed your instructions to the letter.
byte at address 0057: is 13 on original and 14 on bootable.
on sector 18 the sector is almost blank on the original, but has alot of random data on bootable
on sector 19 original says microsoft corp etc. bootable\'s sector 19 looks like originals sector 18
on sectory 20 the original has much data, bootable\'s sector 20 (this is the one I though we copied) has Arnes boot record and is almost blank.
My understanding of hex and boot sectors is slim, but since we copied bin of sector 20 should they not be the same on both discs?
Also how does the \"load segment 07C0 (hex)\" relate to the header info in sector view of \"00 02 20 01\"? I would think these would both be refering to the same address location of sector 20, but I am losing the corralation

Well all, I don\'t know how/why but i followed the howto steps 1 by 1 & making/running a bootable disk for WInXP Beta\'s works great!!!
-
I should probably note, that the boot.bin file is the same used on Windows NT 4 Workstation. Only thing that\'s different is the name of the CD (and that doesn\'t seem to matter).

I have had trouble getting CDRWIN to work correctly -- I keep getting an ASPI driver error. I quickly looked into the ASPI driver issue and it looks complex and unresolved. Any short, sweet and to the point explanations of this driver problem? Also, someone asked earlier about answer files -- there is a good database of articles in the Win2000 magazine archives one by Mark Minasi about adding drivers for NICs and Display drivers into an $OEM$ folder in the I386 directory. \"Unattended Installs with Windows 2000 Professional\", June 2000 will get you started on the answer file. I have my answer file working pretty well with the original Win2K CD, and have begun to consider using the $OEM$ folder with additional drivers. I am stuck creating the bootable CD which includes SP-1, have made almost every mistake iterated on this forum...... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-
Some articles I\'ve been using to try to accomplish this:
Unattended installs with Windows 2000 Professional, Mark Minasi May 10, 2000
Performing unattended setups with Answer files, Robert McIntosh May 22, 2000
Unattended install tricks, Minasi, Sept. 01, 1998
Advanced Unattended Installs, Minasi, August 01, 1998
There are more, and several that you must have a subscription to access. Maybe if I ever get this down to a smooth process I\'ll write it up and send it Josetann\'s way.....

all this time i thought i burnt a bad copy of win2k thats why it doesn\'t boot, but after experiencing some crashes cause of drivers prob with gfx card or somthing i went to my motherboard (aopen ax6bc) site to get a new bios update.
on one of the update it said the new bios would fix the win2k boot disk.
after flashing and booting with the win2k (which i though it was bad) the setup screen came up, no errors
maybe thats the problem many of you are experienceing
-
I don\'t get it. I\'m using 3.8D but the option to \"Record Directories/Files directly to an ISO9660 Disc (on the fly)\" is not available. I do have \"Backup files directly (on the fly) to an ISO9660 compatible disc.\" However, whatever I tried causes the :win2k partition to go on the CD instead of the partitions preceding the partition. Hence, no bootable and so far no option to be able to just get the correct partitions on the CD. I even tried creating a new partition with only the partitions that needed copied and then CDRWIN does nothing but give me a blank CD. I have spent three hours toooooooo long with this.

I burned my own bootable W_2K C.D. and it boots up perfectly. My problem lies in the fact that I slipstreamed SP2 with it and when I try to install W_2K it asks me for a SP2 disk. Any way to fix that error? And I tried that little trick on here about replacing the 3 x\'s with 270 to bypass the serial check. The problem is that it tells me my copy of W_2K is a 180 day evaluation version. Is that normal or does that mean that 270 doesn\'t work? And if it doesn\'t, what does?
brew me a cup. we\'re here for the long haul

Yahoo. I now have a bootable Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD with SP2 and the latest 815 infs working. I had to \'downgrade\' to CDRWIN 3.8b to make it work. Still like to know how to get it to work in 3.8d or maybe I should beta test the 4.0 version.
-
I did it, I did it. Follow exactly and it can be done!
-
Has anyone got a solution to this:::::::
CDBOOT: Could\'nt find NTLDR
Thanks
-
Try using CDRWIN 3.8b instead of 3.8d.
-
I found this on Neowin.net and the config has the checkbox is checked for Preserve Full Pathnames ;}
Just in case anyone else asks..
-
I have the same error,
CDBOOT NTLDR is missing
I know I done absoltely all right, every part. I have screwed 7 CDs on this.
-
First off, PLEASE use CDRW disks! It may take several times until you get it to work right (whether it\'s user-error, or the software doesn\'t work, or something else). Second, try CDRWIN 3.8b instead of the newer 3.8d. There\'s been problems getting 3.8d to make a win2k bootable CD, but 3.8b more or less works just fine.
I did note in the how-to that you may be able to use EasyCD or Nero now, since they allow you to make a bootable cd without emulation. I haven\'t tried it personally and haven\'t heard of anyone trying it and succeeding...so if you try that and it fails, just use CDRWIN (at least to make the first iso, then you can use whatever program you want to burn that iso).
-
Just did it CDRWIN 4.0 and you need to copy the NTLDR
file over and it works fine...
Gary
-
I have a question. You say you have to copy NTLDR over. Copy it over to where? It\'s already on the CD.
Not trying to sound rude, because I am honestly curious. If you\'re copying it somewhere else, like the root directory, and it works; that could help some of these people out.

Hi Josetann:
I am currently running Windows NT on my HP Burner with Easy CD Creator. Do I just install CDRWIN alongside my version of Easy CD Creator and it will work fine? Or do I have to remove my version of Easy CD Creator (I hope not)? I also noticed that the download version of CDRWIN is a 30 day trial, will this do to complete the bootable process? Is this the version everybody else is using?
Also, the version of win2k that I\'m using is from the MSDN, and the CD is not bootable. I\'m not sure if there is a boot.bin file on this CD (will check). I usually have to CD to the correct path whenever I do an install (which is boring). This process will surely help me out a lot. The information on your page is amazing. I am definitely planning on trying the slipstreaming and bootable CD as soon as I receive a response from you.
For slipstreaming, can I do all this copying/extrating on my NT machine that has the burner, or do I have to do this on a machine running win2k pro and then copy the files over to the burner machine.

NTLDR files were copied from a working W2K system
They are in the root directory

Is there any kind soul out there who would take the time (umm, yeah... and do all the work...heh heh....) to develop a Nero-specific version of the working CDRwin procedures for the Win2K boot disk???
I KNOW that Nero has to be able to do this... I am hoping someone out there knows how.
Nothing against CDRwin, btw.... I guess.....

Just to clarify for everyone, the instructions do work on both the retail and OEM versions (thank you Compaq!) of W2K. Based on my own experience (and frustration) at making these CDs, the two problems that I have always had when making them was forgetting the Load Sector Count setting and the CHEEEEEAP brand of CD-R\'s I was using at the time. It does sometimes pay to buy the 100 pack at $18 instead of for $12...hehe.
-
I tryee the same thing with this error
Error \"LOAD DISC\" command failed on device 0:1:0
Device contains no disc or its not ready (04h 00h 02h 02h 3Ah 01h)
also have made an iso first with no luck also
wasted about 4 cd\'s so far
should I give up the fight?
-
I\'m getting the same error. I\'ve tried it on a writeable and rewriteable and same error.
-
OK, so I went ahead and downloaded the trial version of cdrwin, install it on my Windows NT machine (that my burner is running off of) and fired it up without a problem (no conflict). For slipstreaming, I followed your instuctions to the T and that worked out just great. Thanks a million. I also read on Bink\'s site that slipsteaming has to be done on a Windows 2000 machine or it will generate errors. Then I copied the win2k folder (from my 2k machine) which has the contents of the entire win2kpro CD files, with slipstream included over to my NT machine to c:win2k (which has my Burner). I also download the boot.bin file from your site to c:tempboot.bin, because my MSDN copy does not have a boot.bin file. I did a search and there is no such file. (the closest is a bootfix.bin). So I then fired up cdrwin and followed your instructions once again to a T. I double check, triple check and quadriple check then save the settings before I click start. I received this error:
Error: \"LOAD DISK\" command failed on device 2:1:0
Device contain no disk or is not ready (04h 00h 02h 021 3ah 01h). So I eject the CD from the burner and closed it again then it accepted it after I clicked Start again. This was great. So the CD burned OK. Now to test it to see if it will boot. It didn\'t. I tried booting with this CD from many different machines single and dual processor machines. I even set it in the bios to boot from cd and it didn\'t, it just by pass the CD and boot from the hard drive any way. I wanted to get some kind of error message. Then I tried it at home. After the memory count and bios display screen, this message:
\"Searching for Boot Record from CDROM...OK
-- \"
This is a blinking cursor that just sits there, and freezes the keyboard also. I went and have a cup of coffee and came back with no change.
Is something wrong with that boot.bin file, or am I missing something? I downloaded the bootfiles.zip file from Bink\'s site and extracted it to find the \"w2kboot.bin\" file. I will try this file and see if I get better results. I have used 2 CDs now and I\'m not giving up. Your input at this point is greatly appreciated.

youngturk

I\'ve intergrated the HPT3xx.sys files for win 2k onto W2k SP2 CD
I can send you the files if you need them ,you\'ll have to copy them into the right locations and then burn you own CD.
-
Yeahhh!!!! baby!!!! I did it.
You know I don\'t think I did anything different than what I explained earlier. But for some reason I went back and fired up the cdrwin again and double check that the settings were saved, and it was. Then I checked it again against your instructions and save the settings one more time. I started the burn and I didn\'t get an error message this time, and the burn completed succesfully. I actually did left it burning and went to a picnic on Friday, but I did ask someone to put the CD on my desk. I was dreaming about this CD over the weekend, but was not very apprehensive that it would work. I came in this morning and first drop the CD in my win2k workstation and to my surprised the dialog box \"Microsoft Windows 2000 CD\" poped up, and I said wooowwww. I couldn\'t believed it. Soo my next task was to reboot the machine and see if it will boot and it did. FABULOUS. I am so happy. This will improve my installation routines tremendously.
Thank you all very much for being such a genious.
I don\'t know if this will help, but I used MAXELL CD-R 700mb CDs. The boot.bin file on your site is also good.
Cheers
youngturk.
-
Youngturk, I also have a MSDN copy, and was wondering how you intergrated SP2 and made bootable, all the versions of win2k on the msdn cd ?
-
You know, I\'ve had sequential successes/failures with CDRWin, but it\'s still the only proggy that will make this disc happen for real in the end. Despite the seetings being almost idential in Nero Burning Rom 5.x, They ALWAYS give me a CD Boot Error (usually a 4 or a 5...)
Since I shelled out my dough for Nero, but only use the demo of CDRWin, I guess I must wait a wee bit longer for satisfaction with Nero bootables...

cant you just copy the whole retail cd onto your hard drive including all the necessary boot files and just slipstream the i386 with sp2 and burn it onto a new cd?
brew me a cup. we\'re here for the long haul
-
have you extracted the Boot sector off the MSDN cd and tryed the slipstream methords? did that work ?
-
i followed all instructions, except that i used the cdrwin40a. i also added the sp2 package into it and removed the serial number check. the cd booted well, i partitioned-formatted my hd with no problems, and copied all needed files to start the win2k install. when the pc rebooted, the win2k setup window loaded fine, but after only 10sec of processing information it came up with several errors (a nice window gui, not console wierd things.. i dont recall anymore, it was an error log generated by win2k related to the installation disk files corrupted.. boot sector xx..etc) and when i press CLOSE, it reboots.
My question is: is it because i used the boot.bin from your site? or because there is a corrupted issue related to the mix of files from sp2 and the setupp.ini serial check kill? or because the 4.0a?
what i did: i changed the params from 000 to 270 in the setupp.ini file (from the original cd) and copy it to over the one present in the streamed sp2 win2k cd folder. the burning params are ok, i checked them because i saved the config settings
i didnt copied any NTDLR file is present already in the i386 dir, so i dont get any errors when loading the cd. do u recommend me to replace the file from the streamed cd with the one from the original cd??
ty for your help

I have tried you instructions but when I go to START to begin the CD copying in CDRWIN.... the number of directories is 229 and the Required Disc space is 1.1 gb.
It should be about 630 mb....do you know where I am messing up...
Thanks

I took a working W2K disk and copied it and rename the
directory as in the instructions and it worked fine
Mine was only about 400meg. Must have copied some
other stuff over or did it several times Used CDRWIN 4.0a
to burn the disk.
