Title: Need Suggestions for Win2K Server Backups & Antivirus
Post by: Teliger on March 08, 2002, 12:15:10 PM
I am in serious need of some good suggestions for a better backup solution.  The layout is a web server, an exchange server, and a file server all running W2K Advanced Server. The Exchange Server is the domain controller.  These are behind a firewall.... and 8 W2K Pro workstations.  Currently I am attempting backups with a 40GB Tape Drive, which kinda works sometimes. The problem I am having is that with Win98 I used to be able to tell it what to backup, when to back it up and just changed teh tape every day.  The backup that comes with Win2K is not so simple.. and actually quite complicated.  Seems that you have to manually configure it to backup every day or when you change the tape it does not recognize it.  I am also having a very hard time knowing what to back up... ovbiously the data section of the file server, the web site, intranet, contact database, etc... but I have a real bad feeling that when it all goes bad that it\'s not going to be enough to get us back up right away.

So... any good suggestions for hardware and/or software to use for backups? What do you all use? How effective is it?  Anyone backing up to DVD-RW yet?  Is there software that you can suggest that will automatically back up the critical information from my Win2k Advanced Servers and Exchange Server?  Please help!  I can not live in fear anymore!  lol

Also, we were running Norton 2001 on our servers and ended up having to take it off, because our web site will not run and email will not work while Norton is running. Tried disabling the scripting optiont didn\'t fix it.  So currently I have no vantivirus running on these 2 servers.  Any suggestions for good antivirus software made for servers that will work better?  Anyone using any of the hardware antivirus appliances? I was looking at the AVStripper by Ositis, which looks really neat but is quite expensive ($3k).

Thanks in advance for your help and/or suggestions. Any information you can lend will help!

Sorry for the lenghty post.
