Title: Slow Browsing
Post by: whorse on September 09, 2006, 03:55:11 PM
Background Info:

I just installed "Windows Workstation XP" (a hybrid build of XP and Server 2003's kernel by a guy named DexterInside) on my Presario 2100 laptop. The install was glitchy and I manually had to install every driver for every piece of hardware on the laptop, from the touchpad to the built in CD Drive. I also had to change some registry entries as the custom drivers this guy set up for this operating system were set to replace the standard "Windows/system32/" location in the registry. I fixed all that (I think) and now the computer should be working smoothly, but it isn't

RIGHT after I installed all the drivers manually, I tested the internet out and it worked perfectly. Websites loaded just as fast as they did on my other computers. Then I reinstalled some drivers (my video card and my NIC card) several times with different updates as I was having some compatability issues. It turned out that the only thing I had to do with my NIC card was disable "power saving", and I had reinstalled the driver 5 times for nothing. The only other thing I did was install "NWLink IPX/SPX NETBios" or whatever it's called

Current Problem:

Now my browsers, both Opera and IE7, take about 30 seconds to connect to any new website. I can go to google, spend 30 seconds waiting, and then from then on any part of the google.com domain, like search queries or froogle, will be connected to at normal speed. When I open a website with lots of ads it can take forever to load as It says "connecting to website.com" and then "connecting to adserver.ad.com", adding to the time it takes to load the site. Then all the ads/banners come at one time and the website I am visiting comes a second later, as if my browser is loading in chunks or something.

I suspected this might be because of my firewall or security settings or something, but I disabled/lowered both and it made no difference. I changed NIC drivers and that changed nothing as well. I know for a fact it isnt a virus or some spyware bacause:

1. I just scanned with NOD32
2. I have only visited major websites like google and microsoft.com
3. All the security settings are very high by default on this version of XP

PS: Browsing is perfect and the problem is gone when I start XP in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, now I just want to know what's causing it in normal mode

I would appreciate any help

I've isolated the problem. It is the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol. However, I need this enabled for all of my LAN functions to work properly...

Can anyone help?
