Title: Buggy Firefox
Post by: wisdom_of_trees on September 10, 2006, 09:30:58 PM
My browser is acting REALLY buggy, and I can't figure out for the life of me why. Some of the symptoms are that it won't save bookmarks, it periodically ends while I use it, sometimes I won't come up at all. And the search engine bar in the upper right corner dropped all saved search engines I had in it, and no longer works.

So, if anyone has any idea why this is happening or what options I have I'd love to hear them.

Here is my HijackThis file, if it helps at all.

To "iwoopyourass": Yep, the very first thing I did was try to re-install it. The exact same problems occured anyways. But thanks.

To "guestolo":

I am using the most current version of Firefox right now. ver 1.5.0.6
I have the following extensions on it right now.
BugMeNot ver. 1.3
StumbleUpon ver 2.83
Greasemonkey

The online virus scan from Kaspersky's did not seem to get along with my computer. All my resources went to it and the scan stopped around 26% before my computer would freeze. So, I reinstalled AVAST and ran it. Ad-Aware,  Spybot and Avast have not been able to find anything.

It's possible that one of your extensions is causing problems
Go to START>>RUN
Copy>>paste into the open field the next line in bold

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

DON'T hit OK yet
Instead close down Firefox completely

Now click OK at the Run command
If everything was closed
You should get a prompt about running firefox in safe mode
Click the Continue button

Do you still have problems with Firefox in it's safe mode?

Indeed you're right. When I started Firefox in safe mode all of the complaints I had with it are gone. However, all of my extensions of course don't work in safe mode.

So I uninstalled all of my extensions and shutdown firefox. Even with all of my extensions deleted, I still have all the same problems when I shutdown firefox and reopen in normal mode.

Thanks for all your hard work Guestolo. I've figured out the problems I've been having by visiting the forums for Firefox. I never thought to look there, and usually the most simple things are the farthest from my mind sometimes.

Anyways, here is the link for the forums http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php?c=4 (http://\"http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php?c=4\")
Most problems can be found by just typing it into their search bars.

I've been to the Mozilla forums before, thanks for the link  /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
What resolved the issue?
Just for future reference

From the forums
"A corrupt localstore.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder can cause various issues, including missing search engines from the Search Bar and inability to add new new engines."

The search bar was just one of the little problems I had, but it all stemmed from that corrupt file.

They suggested that  the user "Exit Firefox completely and then start it in safe mode. A window called Firefox Safe Mode with some troubleshooting options will appear. Select the option "Reset toolbars and controls" and choose "Make Changes and Restart"."

Here is the page that let me know just what to do http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_engines_d...lstore.rdf_file (http://\"http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_engines_disappear_from_Search_Bar#Corrupt_localstore.rdf_file\")

Thanks Again!
