Title: please help me
Post by: bgibson on September 19, 2006, 11:13:55 AM
I know that I'm not the only one to have this problem, so I hoping that someone will be able to help.

I'm getting the pop up off of my bottom toolbar saying "system alert" with the yellow triangle and black exclaimation point in it. I ran a hijackthis scan. Also, if it's not too much trouble, whoever looks at my hijackthis log, could you also tell me if there is anything else that you see that needs to be deleated. My pop-up blocker no longer works.

Post by: guestolo on September 19, 2006, 01:28:52 PM
Can you post a couple logs for me please
Then we'll run some fixes

Download SmitfraudFix (http://\"http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip\") (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Also
Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

==Download, install, and update  Ewido anti-spyware (http://\"http://www.ewido.net/en/download/\")
Print the rest of these instructions or save them too a text file on desktop

Close down all your browser windows
Open your taskmanager and end process on the following
ViewMgr.exe

Access your add/remove programs and remove the following, if you can, if not, carry on

Title: please help me
Post by: bgibson on September 20, 2006, 11:33:38 AM
I've gotten as far as rebooting in safe mode but I can't get the computer to go into safe mode. Can I do the rest of what you told me to do in regular mode? Or do you know how to get me into safe mode. I restarted the computer but when I hit F8 nothing happens and it still loads in regular mode.

Right after you hear the single post beep from your computer
Start tapping the F8 key
That should bring up the startup menu to select Safe mode
Let me know if that helps

I prefer you run in safe mode

A file pegged by Ewido as bad is related to Verizon toolbar
If you use the toolbar
Open Ewido, click on the INFECTIONS tab
Highlight ONLY this next entry
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\vzbb.dll then click the RESTORE tab
If you don't use it
Uninstall the toolbar from add/remove programs with IE closed

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/web_...aploader_v6.cab (http://\"http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/web_...aploader_v6.cab\")

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

back in Windows
Go to START>>RUN>>Copy and paste then next entry below in bold to the open field then hit OK

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

Find and delete this next file if found
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll <-this file

Afterwards
START>>RUN>>Copy and paste the next entry below in bold to the open field then hit OK
regsvr32 occache.dll

Find and delete the following folders if found
C:\Program Files\EngageSidebar <-folder
C:\Program Files\MyWay <-folder
C:\Program Files\Zango Programs <-folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <-folder
c:\program files\EmpirePokerMaster <-folder
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker <-folder
C:\Program Files\AWS <-folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ldresb <-folder

Come back here and post one last hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please

I don't see either Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 or Spybot 1.4 installed on this machine
They are great free anti-spyware programs
Would you like links to both of them?
I'll link you to them, don't install a bogus program please

Thank you for still working with me on this fix. I'm sorry I haven't replied in a while. I've been away from my comp. But I'll do the things you wanted done now and I should have a new log for you tonight.

You also offered to give me links to free adware/spyware programs, I would like them. I'm also wondering if, being that the other programs that you had me load, (hijackthis, ATF-cleaner, smitfraudfix, and ewido) are programs that, if used by someone how doesn't know what they are doing (me) they could do a lot of damage, should I ever use these, or should I just put them in a folder somewhere and save them for if I have a problem later?

I'll let you know sometime tomorrow how my machine is running.

Thanks again
BGibson

Final cleanup

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

We should flush all your restore points to ensure you don't restore your computer to an infected point
and also start you off with a fresh, clean restore point
 msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point
No need for restart

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE (http://\"http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1\")
