Title: strange toolbar icons

I have a new laptop and recently I have started to get strange icons on my toolbar telling me that I am infected with Trojan-Spy.win32@mx ("Trojan-Spy.win32@mx"). When i click on this icon it opens a website www.pesttrap.com (http://\"http://www.pesttrap.com\") and some times other ones. I have scaned my laptop with AVG anti-spyware and removed all entries found but still I get this icon appearing. I also keep getting Critical System warning informing me that I have Spyware.CyberLog-x.  Can someone help me sort out my laptop please.

Download the latest version of  [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color] (http://\"http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip\")[/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

[color=\"#3366FF\"]Note[/color] : [color=\"#FF0000\"]process.exe[/color] [color=\"#3366FF\"]is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Can you delete your version of Smitfraudfix.zip and the Smitfraudfix folder on your desktop
Then, REDownload the latest version of  [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color] (http://\"http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip\")[/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Print the rest of these instructions or save them too a text file saved to desktop

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the top of the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

• Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
• Click the "Delete Cookies" button
• Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
• When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

• Go to Tools > Options.
• Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
• Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
• Click OK to close the Options window

Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
[/list]* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

• Go to start > run and type:

cleanmgr and click ok.

• Let it scan your system for files to remove.
• Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
• Press OK to remove them.

==Open the SmitfraudFix folder you extracted to desktop earlier

• Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  
• Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  
  
• You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  
  
• The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

Reboot back to Normal windows

Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from Smitfraudfix found here>>C:\Rapport.txt

Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Name it and click create
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the 'More Options' tab
and click Cleanup under System Restore
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool (http://\"http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html\")  

*Will block bad ActiveX Controls

*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background
Keeping it set to Autoupdate is a good move to ensure you have the latest protection available

Keep your Firewall protection enabled
Keep up to date with the latest High Priority updates from Windows Updates

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis
Do you have either Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 or Spybot 1.4 installed?
If not, they are great free antispyware scanners for free

Install both of these scanners and hold onto them, they're yours for free
Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://\"ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/aawsepersonal.exe\")

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Close out after it is updated, as we will need it later
Open Ad-Aware SE 1.06
Click START>>NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process
Check for Immunization after every update

Update and run scans with both on a regular basis

Thanks Questolo... I am currently installing these.

 I have a question; my Norton Anti-Virus has expired and although a friend of mine installed AVG on the computer, I am concerned this is not fully protecting me. Can you recommend any effective, free anti-virus software? The Norton quarantine still detects any anomalies and so far I have deleted SpywareQuake and some Trojan.Zlobs that were in there... I'm just not altogether sure which applications protect against what, yet...

It's never a good idea to run more than one Active AntiVirus software's protections in the background
This can cause system slowdowns and conflict with each other

Since Norton's is expired, why not Uninstall it all thru add/remove programs
Reboot the computer afterwards

Did your version of Norton's have Firewall protection?
If so, after you uninstall it, make sure that the XP firewall is enabled in the Windows control panel

Do you need a free Software firewall?

Hi... I just realised that I have been calling you Questolo, when your moniker is actually Guestolo, is that right? If so, a thousand apologies, man...!

The AVG Anti-Virus Software that I downloaded is warning me down in the little bottom-right-hand toolbar trough that 'Anti-Virus: Internal Virus Database is out-of-date' so I don't know how well I am protected at all... Whenever I have conducted checks and scans and Search-and-Destroys they frequently locate 'Trojan.Zlob Downloader's and I clean and delete these... Should I be concerned /unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':unsure:\' /> about these...?

Download the latest version of  [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color] (http://\"http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip\")[/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Can you delete Smitfraudfix.zip and the folder from desktop
REDownload [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color] (http://\"http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip\")[/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  
• Choose your usual account.

==Open the SmitfraudFix folder you extracted to desktop earlier

• Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  
• Press any key to continue
• Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  
  
• You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  
  
• The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

Reboot back to Normal Windows

1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from Smitfraudfix>>C:\Rapport.txt

I was also wondering, mate, if you knew anything about disk drives... When I try and load up a cd, there is a dialogue box appears with the words 'I/O device error.' Does that mean anything to you? Do you think it is beyond repair or is there a remedy for this without sending it to the manufacturers...?
