Title: Read this! (Time Travel)
Post by: Flaming Raccoon on October 29, 2006, 02:41:00 PM
"Earlier this month scientists sucessfully performed a time travel experiment. Or rather, they discovered one.

The Neutrino is a tiny, mysterious subatomic particle. They can travel through any object (or even a total vaccuum) with ease. They seldom react or interfere with what they pass through, though. There is a constant stream of millions upon millions of neutrinos passing through the roof of your house, and even through yourself, as you are reading this.

A laboratory situated at the north pole and another one on the equator are to thank for this, frankly, amazing discovery. Neutrinos can travel through time.
_____

A beam of Neutrinos is fired into the ground at the North pole. At the same time, another team of scientists is at the equator waiting for them to arrive. Utterly shocked, they find that the Neutrinos arrived BEFORE they were fired from the North pole station. They have checked and re-checked, and there is no other explanation.
_____

The theory behind this is that, some Neutrinos will turn into 'sterile' Neutrinos which will not be restricted by the four dimensions we have. They can - and do - take a 'shortcut' through another dimension, and then re-emerge before they left. They then turn back into normal Neutrinos and can be detected.

The universe has 10 dimensions.

Think of the universe, and the four dimensions of this world as the film on a film reel.

The pictures and sound on the reel makes up the four dimensions we know. Now think of the higher dimensions as the space BETWEEN the roll of film as it is on the roller. The audience cannot see this space. The space is how to think of the extra dimensions. Six of the dimensions are inaccessible.

Sterile Neutrinos, however, CAN access these higher dimensions. They use them to take a shortcut between two of the lines shown above.

This is how they are capable of time travel."

Interesting, huh?

Yeah but that was science fiction, this stuff is REAL.

Yea it is real... sorta... its true that Neutrinos move very quickly (near the speed of light) and its also true that they go through everything, no matter what.  Whats not true it that they are picked up by a detector before they started the Neutrino beam.  The entire trip would take about .25 milli-seconds, so it is still a very short time period.
The matter of the Neutrino's reason for scientific interest, is not that they believe it can travel time, but instead that, unlike photons, Neutrinos have mass.  This would mean that their total mass would add up to more than that of all the rest of the universes matter combined.
So not exactly time travel but still pretty interesting.

Actually they are trying to prove that neutrinos cannot only go through our 4 dimensions, but an extra 6.

1 = Physical objects
2 = Sound
3 = Light
4 = Vacuum
5 = Time
6-10 = ?? :|

Actually we are 4 dimensional because we have:
1. Length
2. Width
3. Depth
4. Change over time

Anything past that we really can't hope to understand so saying that any given particle can move through these undefined dimensions is preposterous if we don't evben know what those dimensions are...

Time travel is possible in a sense because spacetime is curved.  This means that there is no one universal time, as light it relative (i.e. you cannot move faster than light, if you are moving in the same direction as light it does not appear to move slower, as it it moving at the same speed relative to you as it would if you were just standing there).  Time travel could be possible but only into the future, if one traveled very far very fast, time would move slower for them.  When they got back a set amount of time later more time would have past to wherever they left from.
Using that principle Neutrinos move near the speed of light, which means that light would move relative to these neutrinos, making them travel forward in time and give the appearance of a very slow speed.  Since this is not the case, and the particles still move near the speed of light, it means that the particles have less mass than if they were moving slower (the mass of an object lessens as it nears the speed of light, meaning anything at the speed of light, is light).  Keeping this in mind, the neutrinos would have to be adapting light-like qualities (being able to move through anything without disturbing it).  Knowing that we still see light from billions of years ago, it means that it is very possible that Neutrinos are still around from the big bang.
Because they do not move at the speed of light they contain a small amount of mass while retaining light-like qualities.  over 40 billion pass through each person in the world every second, and the fact that they contain mass means that they have more total mass than everything else in the physical universe combined.
And those are facts about Neutrinos, anything else would be purely speculation.
