Title: need help installing a old hard drive into my new pc
Post by: QuantumCube2 on November 18, 2006, 01:47:52 AM
I got a new pc today and I want to take the old hard drive out of my old pc and put it into my new one.
I was told this was the fastest way to move all my music, doc., photos and even one or 2 programs. my old pc only had one hard drive so the operating system is still on there and a lot of stuff I don't want. I was told just to hook it up and copy and past what I want into the new pc then take out the hard drive. I got a upgraded power supply for the new pc that’s 650 watts and there is room but is it really safe to just hook up a old hard drive into a new pc? Any one got some tips like "make sure its the same..." "you have to flip this..."
I really don't have a clue how to do it. I could take pics of both pcs and stuff. I was not thinking when I striped the memory off my old  for parts and now i need data off the old hard drive. I got this new video card right up on the ram cards and i would have to take out the video card and the ram to get the old one working again. But I'll do it if its easyer just to turn on both pcs and like hook them up to each other or some thing.  /huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
options?

Ok i added the old Hard Drive to my new PC. I put it as a slave to my (dvd/rom combo drive) Im not sure if this is were it should have gone but the Main Hard Drive did not have a slave slot. I poped it in hooked up power and the slave cord thing. I turned on my pc and I got a (new hardware found) then it went away. I said "ok will now what"

I opened (My Computer) in the start menu found the F: drive had some of my old programs in side but I can't find my Photos and Music. None on my files from my old pc. When i try to open my owner Documents and settings file i get a window that pops up and says  (Access is Denied) window.

What Did i do wrong what do i need to do to get my old files I did Photo seach of the F: drive and got a whole lot of crap from programs like tool bar buttons.

put the hard drive in exactly the same place as the hardrive in ur new comp would of gone, my tip for this is in future, store all necessary stuff that you use often and watch or listen to on an external hard drive,
there very easy to use and a lot lot cheaper than internal drives then u would be able to change the external hard drive from one computer to another with no problem. /blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

or of course if you dont want to buy an external hard drive just connect them both up to eachother like a network and copy and paste files you want from the old comp to the new one
simple as chips /tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

What operating system do you have installed on the second drive?
It sounds like a permissions problem, that's why you don't have access to the folder
What operating system are you running on the new harddrive
XP? If so, HOME or PRO
