Title: advanced users read this please:) (recovery cd)
Post by: ac3thx on May 09, 2002, 06:52:46 AM
Every now and then i update my bootable recovery cd with all the latest tools available.
R-studio, Powerquest, Ontrack, Winternals,... are just a few of the tools on the cd
(and all the latest enterpricer versions)

Now i´ve 2 questions.

1. I want to include linux that runs natively from the cd
If anyone can help me with that that would be really nice:)

2. Next problem is quite hard i think (some asm skillz are required, and more than i have=P)
One of the Winternals programs on the cd is ERD COMMANDER 2002 (check www.winternals.com for more info).
It´s a windows that runs completely from the recovery cd and has a lot of built in recovery tools.
(like file, folder permissions reset, and admin pass reset, registry editor, drivers and service access,
   network access....)

Now i want to integrate some other tools like Ontrack Easy Recover Pro, Opera, PQmagic and... in
the windows so the run natively. So far so good, it works like a charm.

The problem is i want to make shortcuts to these programs in the ERD COMMANDER 2002 startmenu or
desktop so i don´t have to start explorer every time to start a program.

The desktop icons are in a config file but when i add my shortcuts there the shortcut is placed
on the desktop but nothinh happens when i click on it.

The items in the START menu are not in a config file but hardcoded in the file WINDOWSSHELL.exe
It´s possible to change the names of the startmenu entries with a hexeditor (i use ultraedit)
but not to add shortcuts there (it has to be recompiled after adding stuff) I tried with
recource hacker and others but they don´t show the start menu. I olso tried disasmbling the file
but wdasm89 crashes every time when i load the file:(

Like every other windows os it´s own registry (only hives software and default are used). I need a tool
to edit those files. I´ve tried with alotta tools but none of them could edit non loade registry hives.

I hope somebody could help me with my probs ( would be greatly appreciated ).

When you wanna try you can grab the files at:

http://users.pandora.be/ac3thx (http://\"http://users.pandora.be/ac3thx\")        (there is also a screenshot of the startmenu)
(when you run windowsshell.exe then you can see if it works, it

runs on top of windows for testing purposes, just kill it with
                                     taskmanager)

If you want the whole package just contact me

thanx:)

That recovery cd sux
mine contains much more professional tools.  Even my very first recovery cd was more advanced and better than the UTL 2002 cd.
(exept for erdcommander 2002 which wasn´t available three years ago ofcourse)

wow You include a lot of keygens, that leads me to think that this is a cd full of warez

but your question about a proggy that can edit registry hives, that is a intresting one, I would love an answer too, a tool like that could be very usefull.

How does one get the Super Utilities CD? It sounds great. I have been trying to build something similar (with ERD 2002, Disk Commaner, Norton Utils, etc.) but haven\'t had much luck yet.

Orrrr, you could visit http://biatchux.sourceforge.net (http://\"http://biatchux.sourceforge.net\") where they have developed a bootable linux recovery / forensics cd. The iso is available on this site.

Good stuff.

For the shortcut I may have a way to get around that......
If u can run Visual Basic program from ur Restore CD I can make u a tool bar where u can place all ur shortcuts..... So all u\'ll have to do is run this program that create the tool bar (on start up or manually.....)

Just load the reg hive file into your current (or any) machines HKLM top view/modify & export as hive again !

run regedit (XP)

highlight your HKLM

from the file menu select \'load hive\' and there it is...

using win2k ? use regedit32 instead
