OK, two separate problems I think:
1. I have a new service called "User Privilege Service" with no description which seems to have appeared from nowhere. It's in Manual mode and is not started. Its EXE is svchost.exe -k netsvcs. Of course. Sigh.
2. I cannot install anything which uses MSI files; it fails stating that it cannot read the MSI file. Which is cack. Because it can.
I have done a scan with the SmitFraudFixer and it's clear. I have done a scan with AVG anti-malware (EWIDO) and apart from a couple of nasties which weren't being executed, it's clear. I have AVG Anti-Virus (Soho Edition) (bought and paid for) and it's clear.
Can anyone think of a reason, or places to look, for why I can't use the Windows Installer? Can anyone throw any light on the "User Privilege Service", like what it is, where it comes from, what it does?

Hi there,
Windows installer functiality disability is a very common problem, it can occur if you have live update turned off, my recommendation is that you search in google, Windows installer, DO NOT GO TO ANY OTHER SITE APART FROM MICROSOFT, and download the newest installer for windows, hopefully it should work fine, as for you'r other problem..i done some quick research and was unable to find anything "sufficiant" the only thing i can think of is that, you'r not the administrator on you'r computer..
Maybe questolo can help you more in this.

Automatic updates are turned on and it's fully up to date (along with AVG AV and Zone Alarm).
I am an MCSE with 20 years experience in Computing although it has to be said most of it is with Server OS's - I am most definitely the Administrator of my computer. It doesn't say "Access Denied" or "See your Administrator" - it says it can't read the MSI file - but this happens with ANY MSI file from any source.

OK, I've just re-installed Windows Installer 3.1 (V2) (MSI.DLL 4000.2435) and it still doesn't work... any ideas?
Thanks for your thoughts so far

Hi There.
I have exactly the same problem.....ie; "unable to install anything that uses msi files".
I know you solved it by "It was a space in the pathname - never been a problem before but apparently it is now."
But where do i find the pathname ????? Is it in the registry somewhere?
Please help me if you can remember...
Thanks
